    The word magazine was first used by Edward Cave on a periodical in 1731 in his GentlemansMagazine of London, as it was intended as a storehouse of information. The first two exquisitely

    rare American magazines appeared in 1741. The idea came from Benjamin Franklin, who was

    beaten to press by three days by Andrew Bradford.

    There is a nearly countless panoply of Union magazines,

    including short-lived publications associated with sanitaryfairs, akin to todays Red Cross. Dime Novels and Storypapers romanticized the massive carnage during and afterthe war. There was even an astrological publication thatfeatured Lincolns horoscope in 1860 and correctlyforewarned of his assassination in April 1865!

    James Montgomery Flaggs iconic image of Uncle Sam, the most famous Americanimage of the war, was adapted from a 1914 British poster of Lord Kitchener. It

    appeared twice on the cover ofLeslies Illustrated Weekly Newspaper, the secondwith the caption I Want You. The famous poster was released after the magazine.

    The generations greatest illustrator, Norman Rockwell, pitched in with many covers for theSaturday Evening Post, the most memorable of Rosie the Riveter, adapted from a drawing

    by Michaelangelo. He also created a series of paintings of Willie Gillis his prototypical

    American GI, here seen on pony editions intended for soldiers overseas.

    The most famous image to come out of the war was Joe Rosenthals iconic photo ofthe second flag raising at Iwo Jima. The crude wire photo first appeared on a military

    newspaper and was shortly reproduced on a national magazine.

    Wikileaks notwithstanding, the publishing of top secret State Department documentsinAmerasia magazine created a firestorm that was later to fuel the red-baiting of

    Senator Joseph McCarthy. Henry Luces LIFEmagazine provided the best record of

    ongoing WW2 photojournalism, including this one from VJ day.
