Activation What Is A War?

• What is a War?

• A War is any conflict that lasts longer than one hour. Wars are fought between different countries, or states.

• A “Civil War”, is a war fought between people of the same nationality. For example, in Africa, there are a number of Civil Wars occuring.

• The 20th Century saw more war than any other century in history.

Why Are Wars Fought? • Countries fight over the desire to

accumulate “resources” – e.g., oil, raw materials, and even people.

• Prestige (to prove their country is more powerful than another).

• Power – Victories in War for a leader can secure their position and make them popular amongst their people. War regularly occurs when countries attempt to gain an Empire.

• A Distraction. Sometimes leaders launch wars to distract attention from internal problems, such as poverty and unemployment. Argentina, Falklands War)

• Self Defence – Sometimes countries go to War to defend their people or territories.

What are the consequences of War?

Conclusion • Wars cause massive

damage to country’s economy. Roads, bridges, buildings are damaged, which affects the whole infrastructure of the economy. War interferes with the flow of food supplies to a country, resulting in famine and death.

• People made homeless often seek to escape the conflict by fleeing to neighbouring countries, which spreads disease and potential pressures on other economies. These people are called “refugees”.

• Germany lost the First World War, not to military defeat, but the collapse of their economy. People demanded an end to the conflict on the streets of Germany due to lack of food and disease.
