My collaborators and I have contributed to literature on disability and ethnicity, issues of identity in relation to growing up with a life-limiting or life threatening illness, and presumed ‘racially’ linked inherited disorders (thalassaemia and sickle cell disorder), deafness and identity formation, and access to primary care services. More recently, my work has focused on British Muslims, identity and citizenship. However, I remain interested in ethnicity and health and am currently engaged in the following project: ESRC 2011 for 2 years (£200,000) Living with sickle cell or thalassaemia trait: implications for identity and social life (Karl Atkin, Waqar Ahmad, Simon Dyson, Elizabeth Anionwu and Sangeeta Chattoo) Areas for future collaboration In recent years, I have continued to collaborate with previous research team members and collaborators. I would love to collaborate in the areas outlined above. Funding streams used I have held over £5M in competitive grants from bodies such as the ESRC (3 grants), NHS R&D (numerous from various funding streams including SDO and Health Technology Assessment), the Department of Health, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, the Nuffield Foundation, Cancer Care and the National Lottery. I have chaired or served on funding panels for RCUK, the ESRC, the MRC, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, NHS R&D, the National Lottery and others. I was a major funder in my capacity as the Chief Social Scientist at the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. I have also served as member of the ESRC’s Strategic Research Board and am currently member of HEFCE’s Research and Innovation Advisory Committee. Key publications/outputs I have published in leading journals in sociology, social policy and epidemiology, including Sociology, Sociology of Health and Illness, Social Science and Medicine, Ageing and Society, Ethnic and Racial Studies, Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, Critical Social Policy, the Lancet, Annals of Epidemiology, Critical Public Health, Health and Social Care in the Community, Journal of Public Health Medicine and Health Policy.
