Want to get involved?
EPA citizen scientists learn new skills, new ways of thinking about their local environment, and can meet people in their community with similar interests.
EPA has other citizen science projects under development. You can register to become a citizen scientist and suggest local environmental areas for investigation.

EPA’s citizen science program was established to provide an opportunity for volunteers to be involved with scientific projects in their local communities. Involvement can include project design, data collection and field work, and interpretation of results.
The program aims to engage the community in the scientific work that underpins our decision making. It aims to create a two-way working relationship between EPA and the Victorian community, promoting a shared understanding of important environmental issues.
What is citizen science at EPA?
Citizen science can play its part in increasing community awareness of environmental problems.Bob Temple, EPA citizen scientist
The citizen science program gives me an opportunity to contribute to our community, and, at the same time, gain new skills and knowledge related to our environment.
Anthony Alindogan, EPA citizen scientist

Caring for Waterhole CreekCaring for Waterhole Creek was a collaboration between EPA and the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority. For nearly a year, citizen scientists worked alongside EPA scientists to assess the water quality in Waterhole Creek, and interpret the results.
The project has helped us to understand the existing environmental conditions of Waterhole Creek. Using this information, EPA will be able to better understand the cause and intensity of water quality issues in the future.
Upcoming opportunity – Latrobe Valley dustOur next citizen science project aims to better understand air quality outside your home. All homes have dust, but how much do we know about it? What is it and where does it come from? For information on how to become involved in this project, visit epa.vic.gov.au/citizenscience or contact us on 1300 372 842 (1300 EPA VIC).
