(Joel 2:12)
Traditionally, Lent is a time that we
will attempt to make changes in our
lives. We tend to do a lot of outward
and physical changes to help our-
selves to be better people. We lose
weight, we get healthier, we manage
our time more efficiently, and, all of
that is really good. What we at OSLC
want to do for Lent 2020 is to go
deeper than that.
You are going to hear words and
phrases in sermons and other conver-
sations like, “surrender,” “press on-
ward,” and “succumb” in our invita-
tions to serve Christ and the world
around us. We don’t normally like
those kinds of terms because they in
someway sound so heavy and respon-
sible. They sound like we’re being
asked to do more than a few personal
disciplines.
God calls us to return “with all our
hearts” meaning “with everything
we’ve got.” To give from all your heart
is more than making plans to lose ten
pounds or get more sleep or even
dedicate more time to this or that
ministry. It means so much more.
We are called to return. For me, it
means to go in the opposite direction
I was going. In fact, that can be one
of the understandings of what it
means to “repent.” To “repent”
means we make a 180-degree
change, and, I admit, that’s asking a
lot. It’s hard to go into another direc-
tion I was going. (I obviously liked
going the way I was going.)
It's all about control, really. We like
to be in control of everything around
us—again—our weight, the hours we
work, the time spent at home with
family, etc., etc. When God calls us,
we learn that He is in utter control
ultimately of everything. Yes, I said
everything. It’s a hard pill to swallow,
this control thing, but we can do it.
Read through this newsletter and
begin to pray over the opportunities
to surrender our lives to Christ, I
mean, really, totally, give ourselves to
God. There’s going to be a new
“prayer corner” for us to frequent,
new at-home Lenten devotional
books, new mid-week worships,
“prayer buckets,” book studies, and
other chances to experience change
in our lives.
I’m grateful to take this journey with
each of you. I hope you will be willing
to travel with me on this very special
time of the year. Let us “return” to
the Lord together! I’m looking for-
ward to it!
God loves you and so do I!
Pastor Jim

2018 2019 Budget
As shown by the Offerings graph, December was a most encouraging month. Hopefully, we’re moving our of the months-long trend of offering declines, which had started back in June. However, December, with year-end gifts coming in, is always a difficult month from which to derive trends and conclusions.
For the full year, offerings were unfavorable to the budget by $30,826. Total expenditures and other items were favorable to the budget by $39,700, of which the compensation package for the Associate Pastor position accounted for $47,750.

Prayer
Very soon there will be a very new space in the narthex of our church for you to offer to God your special prayer joys and concerns. We hope you will find this helpful, either on a Sunday morning, or, any other time of the week that you come by the church.
We’re not giving all the details yet, be-cause we want it to be more of a Lenten
“surprise.”

Confirmation for 2020 Confirmation Class will meet on February
23 from 3:00-5:00 pm. We are studying The
Small Catechism [pp.224-226] from their
handbook (“Morning & Evening Prayers and
Blessings at Meals’). We will have a pizza
supper and make Prayer Buckets in the fel-
lowship hall. Read over those few pages be-

Katie Circle will meet on Wednesday, February 26 (4th Wednesday) at 10:30 AM in the Church Li-brary. Pat Wolf will begin a Bible study on the gospel of Matthew.
Preparation of Personal Care Kits is approaching soon. This year we have found we can purchase the combs, nail clippers and toothbrushes in bulk at a discount from Amazon. Therefore, monetary gifts are greatly appreciated so we can place the order in a few weeks. Money or checks (made out to WELCA) may be given to Kathy Bass or Beverly Gugliotta.
Thank you so much for your generosity and support in this meaningful project!
We will soon be able to track the destination of last year’s quilts and personal care kits. Please watch for more details in upcoming newsletters. You can search Lutheran World Relief at the You Tube website for a short video about these items and how important they are to those who receive them.

Lenten Study – led by Pastor Nipper
“Can fifteen beautiful lines from a single page of the Bible change your life? I believe they can, if you are willing to open your heart to their magic. Listen closely to them, read them with an open mind and an open heart, and you will find the answers to questions you are asking: questions about yourself, the people around you, and the world in which you and they live…” (H. Kushner)
We will meet on Wednesday mornings at 10 am starting with Ash Wednesday and Thursday eve-nings at 6 p.m. in the church library beginning Feb-ruary 27th.
I have secured 10 copies of the book for $7.50 a
piece. Anyone else can order on-line almost any-
where but—ask me first please.

Cornerstone Assisted Living Project
We would like your help with a new project – sup-plying Bingo prizes for the residents of Corner-stone Assisted Living. Possible prizes include indi-vidually wrapper snacks (Little Debbie cakes), candy bars, Kleenex, soaps, body lotion, costume jewelry and small stuffed animals. They currently play two times per week and the staff person buys the prizes out of her pocket. This is a great way to provide a small gift to someone and it will make them very happy. There will be a container for drop off in the main lobby. Thanks for your consid-eration to help with this project.
Thank You! Thank You! To all who made the delicious cookies for the lighting of the Johnson City Christmas Tree. Thanks to everyone who help package the cookies, prepare the hot chocolate and helped to serve at the actual event. It was such a fun night. We gave away more than 600 cookie packages, and 4 gal-lons of hot chocolate. That is a lot of cookies and hot chocolate.

INTERGENERATIONAL EVENT We are going to gather on

its during Lent and be-
yond. We will meet in
Fellowship Hall at 5:00 to
assemble our pails with
Pastor Jim and the confir-
mation students followed by a light supper of
pizza around 5:30. In order to have enough
supplies and food on hand, we are asking you
to sign up on either the bulletin board in the
main hallway or outside the nursery.

EYES
ON
JESUS
"Fix your eyes on Jesus."
When the people in the Passion narrative
looked at Jesus, what did they see? Eyes on Je-
sus asks us to look at Jesus through various Bib-
lical characters’ viewpoints, learning how they
saw Jesus. Did they misunderstand Him? Did
they recognize Him as the Son of God?
Using the Gospel of Mark, these devotions will
challenge our families to consider what they see
when they look at Jesus. Pick up your family’s
copy on Sunday morning, February 23.

They can also listen for the service calls (e.g., Lord, in your mercy...) and respond with the appropriate responses (e.g., hear our pray-er).
GUIDED LEARNING: If you have a child in Grades 1-3, please join us in the yellow room (bottom of the stairs) for Sunday school. This month’s lessons are Baby Moses (Exodus 2:1-10) & The Burning Bush (Exodus 3:15).

Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ:
Looking for a wonderful outing to break up the winter doldrums? We’ve got you covered! Please save the date:
*Saturday, March 14, 2020*
I’m Annemarie Dugan, long-time member of Central Baptist and founder of a new performing arts non-profit, Mila Vox
(1000 voices). We bring artists together in God-honoring performances that benefit children’s charities—and inspire
hope through hands on-service projects.
I’m delighted to invite you to Four Pianos in Praise—a marvelous concert experience benefitting the important work
of Isaiah 117 House. This wonderful ministry provides safe, loving homes for regional children awaiting placement in
the foster care system. You may be well-acquainted with their vital work, and know God has His hand on this organi-
zation. It is an honor to be partnering with—and showering Isaiah 117 House in this unique event.
Originally performed for Central Baptist Church’s 150th birthday celebration last year, this unforgettable concert fea-
tures four grand pianos, twelve area pianists and covers genres for everyone: lush hymn arrangements, gospel, sacred
classical, patriotic, lively show tunes and a surprise or two!
“The 4 pianos concert was FABULOUS!!! Praising God in a spectacular way! If you weren’t there you missed an expe-
rience of a lifetime!!! --Joan Tipton, Central Baptist Church, Johnson City, TN”
Four Pianos in Praise will be performed at Seeger Chapel on the campus of Milligan College on Saturday, March 14,
2020 at 2:00 & 7:00pm. Tickets are $20 in groups of 10 or more; $25 for individuals, and can be purchased at
www.milavox.org. Please share this letter and photo below as you see fit. We pray you’ll bring your groups! Together,
we will celebrate what God is doing for His precious children in East Tennessee & beyond!

Wherever we are on our faith journeys, the
Good News is that Jesus is there with us; and
He wants us to keep the faith and finish the
race. We may stumble along the way and will
undoubtedly make mistakes; but with Jesus
by our sides, we can rest assured we won’t
get it all wrong, either.
As a church family, we are supposed to chal-
lenge and support one another as we move
forward in faith. In fact, we promise to do so
every time we welcome a new member into
our family through Holy Baptism and again
when those brothers and sisters in Christ
affirm their baptisms... People of God, do you
promise to support and pray for one another
in your life in Christ? We do, and we ask God
to help and guide us.
As we move into 2020, I am looking for op-
portunities to fulfill the promise made during
every baptism here at Our Saviour Lutheran
Church. The ELCA recommends four practices
for nurturing a lifelong faith. These practices
include the following:
• Worship (purposeful activities with aware-
ness of the presence of the Holy Spirit)
• Guided Learning (opportunities to visit and
revisit Biblical stories with the intent to use
them to live faithfully each day)
• Faith-filled Service (works that are based
on our beliefs and demonstrate our love
for God and neighbor)
• Fellowship (respectful relationships with
our church family that show our commit-
ment to one another)
I look forward to developing programming
this year that will allow us to live out our faith
and share God’s love in the world. I prayer-
fully ask you watch for and join us in these
activities.
Marcy Aaroen
Share your “pinnable” ideas...
For faith formation program-
ming to succeed, all mem-
bers of our church family
need to feel called to partici-
pate in at least some of our
events. God has gifted each
one of us with time, talent
and treasure, and if we are
willing to share those gifts,
we will not only grow in our
own faith but may also en-
courage others to continue
strengthening their faith.
The faith formation bulletin
board in the hallway is set up
for you to write down your
ideas for possible activities/
events... think of it as our
very own Faith Formation
Pinterest board. Just write
your idea on a sticky note
and pin it to the board; it is
not necessary to include
your name, but it may be
helpful if I have any ques-
tions.

February is heart health month. Your heart is in your hands:
1. Each year schedule a checkup with your doctor to have your blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose levels checked.
2. Get physical-every muscle counts when it comes to heart health! Try to get 30 mins of physical activity most days of the week.
3. Drink more water. Stay hydrated!
4. Eat healthy. Keep raw veggies and fruits in front in the refrigerator and healthy snacks in the front of the pantry so that is what you see first when you go to grab a snack.
5. Control Cholesterol-Cook with heart healthy foods, oils, and recipes. Watch your sodium intake.
6. No Smoking and if you do; quit! Try this to help kick your habit:
A. On day 1, cut the # of cigarettes you smoke by half
B. On day 3, cut the # in half again
C. On day 5, cut your smoking in half again
D. On your quit day, QUIT!
7. Maintain a healthy weight-excess weight increas-es your risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. If you struggle in this area; try this:
8. Each day, eat 200-300 calories less than you would normally consume and exercise at least 30 mins on most or all days of the week.
9. Stay positive-if you get off your exercise schedule, have a cigarette, or eat a fattening meal, immediately get back on track toward re-establishing a healthy life-style.
10. Give yourself credit-To maintain momentum with exercising, losing weight, or quitting smoking, keep track of your achievements and reward yourself by doing something you enjoy!
11. Exercise your spiritual heart. It is just as im-portant!
A. Read your Bible daily and ask God to let it be-come life to you.

Dear OSLC family,
“2019 was an extremely rough year for me, but
since the colon surgery in early November, I feel
so much better. The prayers from my church
family have been so wonderful in aiding the heal-
ing process. And I thank God for giving the doc-
tors the ability to do the surgery and for giving
me the directions to follow on how to aid the
healing process. I praise God every day for
that. I also thank the church for the prayer shawl
which was brought to my home and given to me
with such a beautiful prayer to pray for when
times get rough. What a wonderful thing to do
for those who are suffering. Thanks everyone.”
