The Wanstead Village Directory proudly supports local businesses and we encourage you to do the same. Our High Street is proof enough of the individuality that independent retailers can bring to a town. Help us help these businesses by mentioning the Wanstead Village Directory when responding to adverts.

If you are a business that is based in Wanstead, or has a presence in the local community, then we can help you get your message across to our readers. The deadline for inclusion in the January2016 edition is 15 December 2015.

"Mum made a pudding, but my dad insisted that we go to the shelter in the garden as soon as darkness fell. It made no difference that it was Christmas." Those are the words of Wanstead resident and nonagenarian Geoff Prater as he recalls the Christmas of 1940 (see page 32), and there are two interpretations of his statement. One is the realisation that the realities of life go on regardless of seasonal celebrations. But MrPrater's opening four words also tell the optimistic reader that despite the ongoing death and destruction of the Blitz, MrPrater's mother still found within her the enthusiasm to make a Christmas pudding. A glimpse of the Blitz mentality no doubt, but also a testament to the power of Yuletide spirit.

Synonymous with giving and sharing with others, Yuletide spirit is a compelling concept, one that many people enjoy getting caught up in this time of year. But it is also a concept that can mean so much more. For those who keep the spirit of giving alive from January to November, it is also a way of life.

  • Pupils and teachers at Forest School in Snaresbrook joined the nation and Europe in a minute's silence last month in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the Paris attacks on 13November. Led by the school's chaplain, Father Trathen spoke of his sadness and surprise at being back in the Chapel Quad just days after the school community had marked Remembrance Day. Several pupils, including two French A-Level students, then spoke about

the tragic events in Paris and the need to show solidarity and support during difficult and trying

times. Each line of English was repeated in French. Following the minute's silence, Father Trathen spoke

of the importanceof remembering the victims of terrorism, both in Paris and elsewhere.

Meet Santa to support the playground appeal

Members of the Wanstead Playground Association, who are raising money to improve the playground on Christchurch Green, are inviting young residents to meet Santa this month. The grotto, which will be located in the recently refurbished

Nightingale pub, will be open from 12pm to 4pm on 12December (10 per child). Mulled wine and mince pies will be available and there will also be a raffle with vouchers from local restaurants and beauty salons up for grabs. Booking isrequired. Visit wavidi.com/santa

Wanstead High School has shown 'rapid improvement'

Wanstead High School has been rated Good in its latest Ofsted inspection. The report, which was published last month, praises headteacher Bob Hamlyn and his team for 'bringing about rapid and sustained improvement'. The Redbridge Lane West school, which

was previously classed as 'requiring improvement', missed out on an Outstanding award because, among other issues, the work set for students is occasionally 'too easy for the most able or too difficult for lower attainers'. To read the report in full, visit wavidi.com/whsor

Wanstead Cricket Club returned from a one-week tour in the United Arab Emirates last month. Having finished third in the Shepherd Neame Premier League, the Overton Drive club ended the season in style, winning all three T20 matches on the tour, two at the ICC

Academy in Dubai and a third in Abu Dhabi. There was also time to enjoy day four of the second test match between Pakistan and England. Next year is the club's 150th anniversary, which will include a tour to Jamaica in support of the Courtney Walsh Foundation.

  • Photographer continues to support the Wanstead Society

    Wanstead continues to remember them

Residents of all ages demonstrated their gratitude for those who have died in the line of duty at a moving remembrance service at the Wanstead War memorial last month. Roy Brown, who was a member of the Woodford and Wanstead branch of

The Legion until it was forced to close earlier this year due to low membership, helped to organise the well-attended event. The branch can reopen if a total of 25 people join. "Everyone is welcome, not just those with a background in the services," said Roy. Call 020 8500 7840

A selection of images taken by local professional photographer Geoff Wilkinson have been published in the Wanstead Society's 2016 calendar. The cover shows the Wanstead Farmers' Market in full swing on the High Street, followed each month

by a different local picture from Geoff's Wanstead Daily Photo blog. Priced 8 and available from the Eightyfour gallery on Nightingale Lane, all proceeds will go to support the Society's work. "They do so much for Wanstead it's well worth supporting them," said Geoff.

Redbridge wins awardsRedbridge Council won two Compact Awards last month in a ceremony that rewards good relationships between local government and the community sectors. The Innovation Award was presented for the Autism Ambassadors and Redbridge Autism Awareness Roadshow, while the HENCEL Deaf Inclusion project received the Advancing Equality Award. "This year's winners are a showcase of innovative approaches to partnership working," said Peter Holbrook CBE, Chair of Compact Voice.

Councillor Colin Cronin of Snaresbrook ward has written to Redbridge Council's Cabinet Member for the Environment to request broken fence panels surrounding the perimeter of Christchurch Green be repaired or replaced. "The lack of fencing in places, whilst looking unsightly, could also allow a small child or a dog to run into the road. Prevention is better than cure, so I will continue to lobby for these repairs on behalf of local residents both younger, older and of the canine variety," said Councillor Cronin.

Pennywort problems on Perch Pond in Wanstead Park

The City of London Corporation are keen to let Wanstead Park users know they are aware of the floating pennywort problem on Perch Pond and that steps are being taken to control its spread. "In 2016, specialist contractors will be engaged to manually remove the

pennywort and then to undertake targeted herbicide applications on it. This work will be supplemented by volunteers. It is expected that we will need to continue such operations for a number of years," said Geoff Sinclair, Head of Operations for Epping Forest.

Wanstead Historical Society chairman Doreen Golding will be giving a talk at Wanstead Library on 17 December, recounting the various uses of the old Wanstead Kinema building since it closed in 1956. After standing idle, the building was relaunched as

a bowling alley in 1961. Then, in 1968, the late actor Warren Micthell reopened the site as a bingo hall. In 1988, the upstairs became a snooker club and downstairs became a health club, before converting to a Vietnamese restaurant in 2000. Call 07949026 212

  • What Wanstead wants: local residents call for new shops

Wanstead features in the TimeOut Love London Awards

The results of Time Out's annual Love London Awards were announced last month with several Wanstead businesses featuring in the local results. High Street coffee shop The Larder was runner-up in the caf category; Luppolo, Time for Tea, Otto Restaurant, Sumo Fresh and The Duke

were shortlisted in the restaurant category; The Nightingale, The Duke and The Manor House featured in the in the pub category; and The Orange Tree and Wanstead Fish were both named in the shops category. Wanstead Park was also highlighted in the local culture category.

Having recently made the top five in the London category of the Great British High Street Awards, a group of local residents have contacted the editor of this publication to put forward their suggestions for the type of shops they feel are needed to further improve the area. Top

of the list is a hardware store, which they are pleased has been fulfilled by the recent opening of Toolbox at 5High Street. Also on the list is an affordable gentleman's clothing shop, an 'all-round' shoe shop, a shop for children and an antiques shop for collectors.

have you ever met one of those people who you instantly gelled with? Someone who is funny, thoughtful, honest and genuine and who takes time to listen and to think? that's Frank. A whole book wouldn't do him justice, and after spending a long time wondering how on earth I can tell you enough about him in 600 words, I've decided I won't try. I'll just tell you a few of the things he's told me and let you join up the dots yourself.

As a school kid playing football in Forest Gate, Frank used to think what a lovely place Wanstead was. Later, he got to know the area well as a postman (which he was for 14 and a half years). Frank has been in Wanstead since 2004, the year of his second marriage. The first fell to pieces as a result of the loss of his son Ashley, who died suddenly and unexpectedly of Hirschprung's disease (where all or part of the gastrointestinal system can't function because it has no ganglions) at a very young age. Frank himself spent six years of his childhood in Great Ormond Street Hospital with the very same disease.

Already working for Barnardos, the death of his son showed him how life can change in a second: "My world was my child. That led to me doing lots of voluntary and charity work, which I've done over 30 years." I think he's probably simplifying things. He showed me two very prestigious awards given to people who work in the public sector and have contributed exceptionally to local communities and charities.

Every year he does something to raise money for charities. Earlier this year, he raised over five thousand pounds by cycling from Land's End to John O'Groats. He tells me that on the third day he was finding the hills of Cornwall so hard that he sat down and thought 'I can't do this'. He managed though, because he jokes that when he called his wife to say how hard and high the mountains of the Scottish Highlands were, she laughed and said 'that's why they're called Highlands!' All this would be hard for a healthy man, but five years ago Frank was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma and bone marrow cancer. They're managing to keep it stable, but it hasn't gone away.

Frank says a lot of his charity work is because of his background: "While I was at hospital, I

had nice clean clothes every day, food that I really enjoyed and more. Before I went I hadn't realised my family was poor, when I came back I did. People would bring round clothes and toys, and secondhand things felt like new. We didn't go away but the church would arrange a day trip to somewhere like Blackpool and we'd love that as kids. So I want to give some of that back. It's a nice thing to do, even if it is a tiny bit. That's why I started the Frank Charles Give a Gift Appeal. Hasters Foundation in Loughton have done all the paperwork for me, and it would be a wonderful Christmas gift if the Charity Commission said yes [to making it a registered charity]."

Meanwhile on 17 December, he'll be taking toys to the Acorn Ward at Whipps Cross. If you'd like to donate money or gifts, please leave them with Ali at Wanstead Pharmacy (75 to 77 Wanstead High Street) and Frank will pick them up from there.

  • the Conservation Advisory Panel (CAP) had been running for many years until 2014. It was staffed by local volunteers and was tasked with offering advice on planning applications in conservation areas across redbridge.

With 11 out of the 16 Conservation Areas in Redbridge in the Wanstead and Woodford area, the decision by the council to scrap this body was met with much disappointment in the Wanstead Society, which had sat on the panel for over 10 years. We felt that this organisation not only offered a voice to local people who, after all, will have to live with any planning decisions for the next 50 to 100 years, but also offered an important check and balance to decisions made by planners in the Town Hall. CAP was a voluntary voice for ordinary people and offered advice to developers on how to protect and enhance new buildings within conservation areas.

Many people may think this panel wasn't important, but with Regional Planning and Area Committees also abolished in 2014, it's become increasingly difficult to share a local view arounda table with officers and councillors. Granted, you can raise issues at Local Area Forums, but these have been to Wanstead and Snaresbrook twice since 2014, whereas CAP used to meet every six weeks. However, the council decided to abolish the body to save money, which amounted to a grand saving of somewhere between 3,000 and 6,000 they don't seem to know an exact figure.

Over the summer, the Wanstead Society, along with councillors Nolan, Dunn, Cronin and Cummins and other bodies such as the WansteadNeighbourhood Watch, raised a petition with well over 1,500 signatures to force the Labour-run council to change their decision. Given that Wanstead councillor Paul Merry described CAP as a "luxury" at the last area forum in Wanstead, we didn't hold out much hope we would describe the ability for local people to voice their concerns, offer advice and

contribute to the planning process in this way as "necessary", not just for Wanstead, but for the whole borough.

We took our petition and delegation to the full council meeting last month to listen to the debate and make a positive contribution. We offered to meet during the day to save on officer overtime, print our own agendas and paperwork and even take the minutes if needed. But in the end, we lost the vote by 10 and the council leader said: "We had to move on from CAP."

So there you have it. We feel very let down by this decision, but the Wanstead Society, along with all those named previously and more, really did try hard to get this decision reversed so that we could continue to protect and enhance our conservation areas in a more robust way. It's just a shame the council doesn't feel the same.

Don't scrap CAPAn update from Scott Wilding, Chairman of the Wanstead Society, who led a delegation to a council meeting last month to ask Redbridge to reinstate the Conservation Advisory Panel (CAP)

  • I have been chair of the Wanstead Business Partnership for the last year and have been liaising with local businesses and redbridge Council to help the high Street work together. We are slowly making changes for the better and this year Wanstead made it into the top five of the Great British high Street Awards for London. We are aiming to make the top three next year, and we are also asking local businesses what they would like help and support with. We would also welcome any suggestions from people who use the high Street.

Christmas tree Stamp Collection Campaign Following the success of last year's Christmas stamp collecting campaign, we will be doing something similar on the High Street again this year. Simply collect a stamp for your Christmas tree postcard every time you shop at a participating shop displaying the poster (we are hoping this will grow, so if a business is not part of it, ask them why, and we can try to get them onboard) and once you have 10 stamps you can enter the prize draw to win one of many prizes, including gift vouchers, a meal for two and tickets to The View from The Shard. Stamps can be collected up to Christmas Eve and the draw will take place on 9 January 2016.

Late night shopping Some shops along the High Street will be open until 8pm on Wednesday evenings in the run-up to Christmas. We are trying to get as many shops onboard with this as we can to take advantage of the evening passing trade as people head home from work. On average, 4,465 people leave Wanstead Tube station every day and 4,913 come out of Snaresbrook Tube station; many of these will continue their journey along the High Street.

Wanstead Farmers' Market The regular Wanstead Farmers' Market, which takes place on the first Sunday of every month on the High Street, will be supplemented this month by an additional Christmas market on 20December. Santa Claus will be in attendance to hand out gifts on the day.

Wanstead alert system We are in the process of setting up a business alert system so that High Street businesses can keep in touch with each other in real time. The alert system will enable any participating businessto notify all others in the group of events or activities that may affect their business or the safety of the High Street, including lost children; shoplifting; forged notes; anything suspicious; intoxicated people; thieves; and doorstep sellers.

Wanstead, in businessIn the first of a series of articles looking at the work of the Wanstead Business Partnership, Darrell Toakley reports on some of the group's plans for Christmas

  • Seventy-five years ago this month, the Blitz that had brought so much death and destruction to Wanstead through the autumn of 1940, left a population more concerned with survival than Christmas.

Though the intensity of the night raids in November began to be scaled back, the weight and size of the bombs continued to bring misery at a time when Yuletide festivities would be getting into full swing.

On 3 December, bombs fell in Nelson Road, Woodford Road and Eagle Lane, damaging road surfaces. Later the same night, houses in Wellington Road and Elmcroft Avenue were badly damaged by bombs.

The final raid of the year, on the evening of 8 December, saw yet more tragedy befall the boroughs. Just after 7pm, a high-explosive bomb fell in St Albans Road, killing three people. And at 10.25pm a paramine was dropped on Wordsworth Avenue in South Woodford, killing 14 people and injuring 41.

There was a pause in the bombing, but Christmas must have been a grim affair, with families on tenterhooks waiting for the inevitable air raid sirens to sound at any moment. The weather did not bring any respite. On 20 December, a keen northeast wind set in that would last until Boxing Day. Cloud and the occasional snow flurry blew in off the North Sea, blotting out any sunshine and restricting temperatures to only a couple of degrees above freezing.

Wanstead resident Geoff Prater, 91, was living in Leytonstone at the time, but remembers Christmas 1940 well: "Mum made a pudding, but my dad insisted that we go to the shelter in the garden as soon as darkness fell. It made no difference that it was Christmas."

The raids didn't start up again until 5 January and with them came even colder weather as an anticyclone became established over

Scandinavia. The opening week of 1941 was dominated by bitterly cold easterly winds, with temperatures barely above freezing, severe frosts at night and some snow a near repeat of the severe January a year earlier.

On 5 January, bombs were dropped on StAlbans Crescent and Canfield Road. Further high-explosive bombs fell in the area on 7 and 11 January as the cold continued to bite. The minimum on the night of 15 and 16 January fell to minus 7.5C, but during the third week, a thaw set in as heavy snow turned to rain; it became misty and temperatures slowly rose. On 20January, nearly 17mm of rain (including melted snow) fell, and on 22 January, the temperature rose above 8C.

Weathering the BlitzIn the third of a series of articles marking the 75th anniversary of the Blitz, weather enthusiast ScottWhitehead offers a meteorological-based review of local events in December 1940 and January 1941

The author's inspiration for this article comes from the book It Happened Here by Stanley Tiquet, which is available for loan and purchase from libraries in Redbridge.

  • the Suffolk coast. Speyside. the New Forest. All are great destinations for immersing yourself in the natural world, and what person with an interest in wildlife would pass over an opportunity to watch spoonbills wading in the shallows, red squirrels climbing in Scots pines or red deer quietly feeding in a sun-dappled glade? But let's be honest, time and money prevent us from enjoying that kind of experience every weekend and there really isn't the need to travel that far because there's so much to see on our own doorstep.

There's no escaping the fact that we live in a very good place for nature. Just 20 minutes by tube from the City, courtesy of the Central Line, Wanstead has deer, skylarks, 25 different kinds of butterflies, glorious spring bluebells and even a few orchids. Our corner of London benefits from being at the southern apex of Epping Forest, with a mix of freshwater lakes, woodland and flower-rich heathland in Wanstead Park and on Wanstead Flats. And we also have hundreds of large, leafy gardens in some cases so leafy that they are almost a continuation of the Forest itself.

Much of our wildlife is in the most unexpected places between the headstones in the City of London Cemetery; along the wayleave behind Belgrave Road; in the churchyard of St John the Baptist in Leytonstone; and in the middle of the Green Man roundabout, to name just four. If you don't believe me, check out these places for

yourself next spring, when flowers begin to bloom or, in the case of the cemetery, next autumn when the fungi appear.

We are very fortunate to live here. But now the Wren Wildlife Group is on a quest: to find out how many different kinds of plants and animals we have. The area has been better surveyed than most, thanks to the efforts over the years of people like Tricia Moxey, Paul Ferris and Colin Plant. For example, Paul's Wanstead Wildlife website states that almost 800 species of 'higher' plants have been found locally, mostly by him during his 1980s survey. That figure doesn't include mosses, let alone the lichens and fungi. And things have changed since the 1980s. We know that from the successful bio-blitz of June this year.

Citizen science Building on the success of that bio-blitz (in which 280 people participated and which recorded almost 700 species), the Wren Wildlife Group wants to enrol the help of local residents a team of 'citizen scientists' to discover 1,000 different species. Who knows, we may find even more! When local naturalist Rose Stephens visited Manor Park Cemetery last spring in search of insects to photograph, she was amazed by the variety she found. Most local people are probably only vaguely aware of the cemetery, yet its

untended parts prove to be a wonderful nature reserve. Rose found a scarce but very beautiful little fly called Mintho rufiventris, as well as hoverflies, butterflies, beetles and 36 different kinds of bee. Similarly, when someone persuaded me to run a light-trap in my garden to attract moths, I had no idea that within four years I would have seen almost 400 different kinds, including one not previously recorded in London. Other local naturalists have had similar experiences.

So why not give it a go? We will be coordinating sightings from the 'greater Wanstead' area, encompassing Wanstead Flats, Manor Park Cemetery, Leyton Flats, the woodland around Gilbert's Slade, the grounds of Snaresbrook Court and all the cemeteries, churchyards, gardens and tiny plots of open ground in between.

Plans for the year A few of the things we're planning for the Wanstead 1,000 project:

z A spring garden watch asking for sightings of bees, birds, bugs and butterflies.

z Amidsummer bio-blitz in Wanstead Park, with pond-dipping, walks and bat-detecting.

z Botany evenings in the spring and summer when we'll descend on flowery corners of our area to see what's growing.

z A breeding bird survey in the City of London Cemetery and in Manor Park Cemetery.

  • In 1811, the British public were excited at the prospect of a royal wedding, when the King's son proposed to a well-known celebrity. the lucky lady was the fabulously wealthy Catherine tylney Long, heiress of Wanstead house. In fairytales, young women fantasise about marrying a prince. But unfortunately for Catherine the Duke of Clarence was portly, uncouth and old enough to be her father. Nevertheless, her family encouraged the match, advocating that her children could ascend to the throne (the Duke of Clarence was crowned William IV, in 1830).

Catherine was well aware of her duty to marry as high as possible, to elevate the power and status of the Tylney Long family. But she was already deeply in love with someone else. William Wellesley Pole, nephew of the Duke of Wellington, possessed the dashing good looks of an archetypal romantic hero, with dark wavy hair and a dazzling smile. He was a trendsetter who introduced new innovations from his travels, such as playing polo and waltzing. Catherine was impressed by his 'fascinating manners'.

A love triangle developed and became the subject of much public debate should Catherine give up the man she adored for the opportunity of becoming Queen of England? The nation awaited her decision with baited breath. Love, duty and marriage were hot topics during the Regency era, as signified by the runaway success of Jane Austen's novels. Although the notion of romantic love was tantalising, many believed that money and power prevailed. Therefore, the public was shocked when Catherine chose the pauper instead of the prince.

Jane Austen was among those who approved of Catherine's decision. It was a bold move, demonstrating that Catherine was a pioneering, single-minded, thoroughly modern woman with romantic ideals. She was like Elizabeth Bennet, the spirited heroine in Pride and Prejudice, who stubbornly refused to marry a man she did notlove.

Jane Austen was so impressed by Catherine; her heroine in Northanger Abbey is loosely based on her. The public of the day would have made the connection instantly because, in the novel, Catherine Morland marries and becomes Catherine Tilney. At the end of Northanger Abbey 'the bells rang and everybody smiled' as fictional Catherine gets her happy ending. It is interesting that Austen chose to end all her novels at the altar, rather than delving further ahead. It is easy to imagine how arrogant Mr Darcy and spirited Lizzy could have been at loggerheads.

In the real world, married life proved extremely difficult for Catherine because the law gave husbands ultimate control. William now owned her she formed part of his goods and chattels. Her struggles are revealed in my book, The Angel and the Cad. As one review points out, 'Roberts does an outstanding job of bringing this dark tale to life, and her book truly is a page-turner that surpasses any work of Regency fiction' (Hallie Rubenhold, BBC History Magazine).

Catherine strikes back in the final chapters, demonstrating that she was a feisty protagonist, truly worthy of her status as a Jane Austen heroine.

It's all about CatherineIn the second of a series of articles exploring the life of Wanstead House heiress Catherine Tylney Long, local historian Geraldine Roberts recounts how Catherine turned down a future king to marry for love

  • Firstly, if you are going out or going away, then keep dates and times private, and tell a trusted friend or family member to keep an eye on your home. Check your security settings on your social media profiles to ensure that only your friends can see your information, such as posts informing others that your home is empty. Assume that anything you post can be read by anybody. Also, make sure you leave a light on and a radio to come on at different times of the day.

When using ATMs, be aware of who is around you and check for unusual devices on the machine before using it. Think about how much cash you need to take out and bear in mind that you can always top up later.

Be aware of bogus charity collectors and ask for their charity number, which can be checked at www.gov.uk. Make sure that your kind donation makes it to the organisation you want it to and not to a criminal. It is a good idea to help the homeless with gifts of food instead of cash.

When out at Christmas meals, be aware of table surfing. Ensure you don't leave valuable items on the table and keep bags zipped up. Also, keep phones, wallets, and keys in zip-up pockets, out of the sight of thieves. You also need to keep an eye on your drink, as if left unattended, it could be spiked. Also, be aware of whom you accept drinks from; you never know what the person's intention might be. As for drugs, don't be tempted! Nothing good can come from taking drugs, and any time you take them you are gambling with your life. Once has been once too many for so many people. When out and about, don't give out personal information to anyone as this might lead to nuisance text, calls and emails.

Remember, when travelling home only use licensed taxi companies and pre-book your ride. It is worth knowing that only black cabs are allowed to make indiscriminate pickups. If walking home, stick to well-lit paths and walk toward oncoming traffic, as this means nobody can stop and offer you a lift. Keep phones out of

sight and try not to walk home on your own. Be aware of your environment and who's around you listening to music or being distracted by your phone could see you walking into danger.

When it comes to drink and drug driving, don't take the risk and leave the car at home. Remember, there is no minimum limit when it comes to drug driving and the result from a night of foolishness can have long-lasting consequences. Don't take unnecessary risks with your safety after you have had a drink by running across roads. You will be putting yourself and others in danger. Make sure a good night does not end with a trip to A&E.

Make the most of the festive period by looking after yourself and staying safe, and I hope you have a very merry time.

PCSO Alan Winston of the Wanstead and SnaresbrookNeighbourhood Policing Team urges local residents to take note of a few important tips to ensure you and your belongings stay safe over the festive period

  • Since 2003, haven house Children's hospice, based in Woodford Green, has provided a range of support to life-limited children and their families to help them through the most difficult circumstances imaginable.

When Isabella was born, her mum Maria was told it would be a miracle if she survived the night. She was born with hypoplastic left-heart syndrome (a birth defect that affects normal blood flow through the heart) and was incrediblyill. Over the first few months of her life, her kidneys failed and her liver stopped functioning. She also had hydrocephalus a build-up of fluid in the brain and had to have emergency surgery on Christmas Eve to insert a shunt (a thin tube implanted in the brain) to drain the extra fluid. The hydrocephalus crushed the brain against her skull causing damage to the brain and optic nerves. Over the years, she has had countless operations and trips to hospital.

Isabella recently turned 13. However, she is unlikely to live past her teenage years. While she is aware that she is likely to go to heaven when she is young, she doesn't really understand what it means as her learning and mental capacity is that of about a five-year-old.

It has been really hard for Maria to accept that her beautiful girl is terminally ill. However, she has had the support of Haven House Children's Hospice since Isabella was 11 months. With no family or friends to turn to, it was Haven House who gave Maria a lifeline when she needed it the most. "When I first started coming to the hospice, the nurses made me realise that I didn't have to do this on my own any more. They really were the only support I had and they quickly became an extension to my family," said Maria.

When Isabella is having respite at Haven House, it enables Maria to recharge her batteries and spend some quality time with her three other children. Isabella loves her time at Haven House; her favourite thing to do is music therapy, where

she gets to sing her favourite songs. She also loves the sensory room and the trampoline in thegarden.

Maria concludes: "Without Haven House, I'm not sure we would have made it this far. The amazing staff have helped us through some very tough periods and with their help, I have found the strength to give Isabella the best possible life for however long that may be. I know that when the time comes to say goodbye, Haven House will be there to support the whole family as long as we need it. You cannot overestimate how much that means to me."

    how your donation could help:

z 23 could pay for a child to have a one-hour session in the interactive sensory room.

z 38 could pay for 90 minutes of personal counselling by a qualified counsellor.

z 59 could pay for a child attending a one-hour group music therapy session.

Haven House Children's Hospice would like to ask you to consider donating to Isabella's Appeal this Christmas It could be the best gift you give all year, says Natalie Tomlinson
