Mayor’s Column Tracey Roberts JP Welcome to the Wanneroo Link, the City’s fortnightly communication with residents. The Link allows us to announce initiatives such as the audit of safety and signage at all of the City’s swimming beaches, being carried out by Surf Life Saving WA. This survey follows several tragic incidents in recent months, including two at Claytons Beach, Mindarie, and as our population grows we want to ensure beachgoers are as safe as possible. I encourage the community to participate by logging on to www.surflifesavingwa.com.au The City’s 12th annual Art Awards in the Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre are the highlight of our City’s artistic community. Opening night was a fantastic evening, boasting over 200 entries with prizes totalling over $16,000. Congratulations to all winners, especially the winner of the City of Wanneroo Open Award (acquisitive), Rowena Keall Walsh with her painting ‘Pinnaroo’, which was highly praised by the judges. Entries can be viewed at the Exhibition Gallery (details below). We have also recently hosted a function for our wonderful 131 fire service volunteers, from Quinns Rocks, Two Rocks, Wanneroo, Wanneroo Fire Support, City of Wanneroo Fire Brigade and FESA. What a great opportunity it was to show our appreciation and sincerely thank those who protect the lives and homes of our community. I would like to share with you a wonderful story. A Wanneroo couple both almost 90 years of age have been exchanging Christmas and Easter cards with their neighbours. This has led to good neighbourly relationships and has brought people closer together. A true demonstration of the community spirit that makes Wanneroo such a fine place to live. It has worked so well, they are suggesting everyone takes part and it may even evolve into a “Near Neighbours’ Day”. What a great example.
