My accomplishments from the first chapter in my life have allowed me to set the limits - or in my case, erase them for the next chapter in my life.

I am fortunate to have had opportunities presented to me which allowed me to express what was my own inner passion. I was gifted with a talent to perform and a drive to succeed. I was lucky to have been supported by mother who seemed to understand this.

My talent managed to guide me around the world through a life of sport; to the Olympic Games and, in between, introduce me to lives of those I would never have met otherwise.

For this, I know that I have been fortunate.

I have always danced to my own beat and pursued my dreams, regardless of ‘the norm’. I have never believed that it is too late or that I have been too old. I listened only to my inner voice and this is what it told me:

It only matters what you believe and that your belief in yourself is the strongest power you have.

For an elite athlete, when retirement becomes a reality, there is a transition that every athlete goes through to reinvent themselves in a way that makes sense.

Like so many, I too have faced challenges. Four years ago at the age of 47, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), an auto-immune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the joints. I felt betrayed, betrayed by my body, the tool that led me through life and that I relied on for my own success. I questioned everything.

But I still I knew I wanted to give back, not only to the sport of volleyball, but to everyone -- in a way that would teach people and inspire people to live well, feel well and be healthy.

I want to have an impact, I want to encourage young athletes and those who struggle to make a change in lifestyle or those in the midst of one. I want people feel good about themselves and to carry that forward in their own lives.

Belief in yourself is the strongest power you have. My RA has been in remission for over two years now. I am in the best physical condition I have ever been and I’m ready for the next challenge to begin.

Join me, won’t you?

This August, 2013, Torino, Italy will welcome the World Masters Games. This event is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and will attract more than ten thousand athletes (over the age of 35) from around the world. Many competing will bring with them their former experiences from past Olympic Games, World Championships, Continental Cups and more.

I too am hoping to attend in what will be my third games and also a chance to defend the Gold Medal for the third time with my partner Laura Inward (Toronto).

I may just need a little bit of help to get there. Let this begin our journey and we can discover how we might be able to help each other.
