Cont r i bu t ed by John Dawe ----- I ce upon a time there was a little red henwho scratched around and found some grainsof wheat. She prompt ly called upon the otheranima ls to help her plant the wheat. "Toobusy", said the cow; "Wrong union", said thehorse ; "Not me", said the goose; "where's theenvironmental impact study"? asked theduck. So the hen planted the grain by hersel f,tended it and reaped it by herself. She thenca lled for some assistance to bake somebread . " I'd lose my unemployment relief ',said the duck; " I get more from the RED handouts", said the sheep ; "Out of my classification and I have already explained my unionproblem", said the horse. ,"Iv. this hour?"queried the goose; "I'm preparing a submission for the lAC', said the cow.

So the little red hen got to work and bakedfive lovely loaves of bread and held them upfor everyone to see. "] want some", claimedboth the horse and the sheep; "I dem and myshare", said the duck. "No" , said the litt le redhen. " I've done all the work , I'll keep thebread and rest awhile".

"Excess profit", cried the cow; "Capitali stpig", screamed the duck; "Foreign rnulunati ona!", yelled the goose; "where's theworker's share?" Said the horse. So they hurriedly painted picket signs and paradedaround the little red hen yelling, "We shallovercome" . And they did . The farmer hearingthe commot ion came down to the farmyard tosee what it Wa S about.

"You must not be greedy, litt le red hen.look at the disadvantaged goose, the underpr ivileged pig, the less fortunate horse, theout of wor k duck. You are guilty of makingsecond class citizens out of them. You mustlearn to share".

"But, bUI I worked hard to produce thebread on my own" , said the litt le red hen."Exact ly", said the farmer, "Th at's the wayfree enterprise wor ks these days.

"You arc free to wo rk as hard as you like. Ifyou were on a communist farm you wouldhave to give up all the bread ; here you cankeep one loaf and share the other fouramongst your needy companions".

And so they all lived happi ly ever after .The interesting anecdote to this story is thai

the university research team, having obtaineda big government grant to study this odd hap pening. wondered why the litt le red hen neverbaked nny more bre-ad .
