The Waltham Forest Output Specification set the bar high for the development, describing the high achievements, ethos and values of the school, along with its future aspirations under the BSF programme. Designed by Architecture PLB, the scheme comprised half construction and half renovation works. Improved facilities enabled an expanded curriculum, building upon the school’s maths and ICT specialism. Capacity was also increased, with new high-quality specialist teaching spaces.A close collaborative process always results in buildings that better reflect stakeholder aspirations, as well as meeting functional and value requirements and facilitating successful transformation. The scheme for Walthamstow School for Girls was developed through site visits and a series of design meetings attended by school and community stakeholders. We gained immensely beneficial insights from consultation with student representatives, whose background work incorporated students’ ideas for the redevelopment of their school.
Several stakeholder insights were acted upon, resulting in the creation of a positive learning environment. Flexibility of learning spaces was supported by efficient use of retained buildings, enabling future teaching innovations. Circulation routes were made legible and accessible, linking the school together and eliminating the need
for students to leave the school environment to move between buildings. New dining spaces were created to safely accommodate the number of pupils dining, along with a variety of internal and external social spaces which can be used for informal dining. Work and social spaces for staff support workforce reform and faculty restructuring.
In line with Bouygues UK’s focus on sustainable design, the project features ventilation and heating systems which use a highly efficient heat exchanger, reducing energy usage. Site waste management saw segregation of all construction waste to allow recycling and re-use. Special attention was paid to the integration of a new building into an Edwardian architectural environment with protected trees. As a result of these and other sustainability-focused measures, the project was awarded a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’.
