Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to Cricklefield Stadium for this evening's Essex Senior Cup third round match with Bowers & Pitsea. We wish their players, supporters and officials a short but enjoyable stay with us. We also extend a warm welcome to this evening's team of match officials. As you can probably tell, this evening's programme is a bit lighter than usual, and the price has been reduced to reflect this. Saturday's match was one of those that the longer it went on, the more obvious it became that we were not going to win. I can't remember us having so many shots (both on and off target) in one match. We were thwarted by the home 'keeper who was in magnificent form, and one linesman who disallowed a goal for off-side despite the "touch" coming off a home defender's head. We were

also denied as a clear a penalty as you can ever want to see. The onslaught was such that at one point, the home 'keeper turned to us and admitted that we "should be 8-0 up!". Still, hopefully losing form a winning position should make the boys stronger mentally and make doubly sure that it won't happen again. Sadly for me, it did happen again, the next day! It was the same story for my Sunday League side. We lead twice, 2-0 and 3-2, and yet somehow contrived to lose 4-3, despite dominating pretty-much the entire match. Back to this evening, and we take on Bowers & Pitsea for only the second time in our history, though we did beat Bowers United 4-0 on our way to Essex Thameside Trophy glory in April 1998. We played Bowers & Pitsea in the fourth round of the 2004-5 competition, but were knocked out, going down 3-1. Hasan Ugar Kardal scored that day for us, despite Hakan Hayrettin putting out a near full-strength side. Of course, many will remember that the following season we won the competition, albeit by default after the opponents of the other semi-final were kicked out for brawling.

Last season we were most unlucky to lose to Football League side Southend United on penalty kicks, after holding them to a draw in normal time. Penalty kicks will be taken this evening, should they be required. On Saturday we entertain Aveley, who have looked pretty handy so far this season, and beat AFC Sudbury 4-1 on Monday evening. Having seen Aveley once already this season, they certainly are very capable going forward, and we'll have to be on the top of our game come Saturday to get anything out of the match. After that, we're on the road for three matches we take on Needham Market, Witham Town, and then Chatham Town. The club began life in an old wooden cricket pavilion in 1947 on the site of what is now Pitsea Market. A move to Gun Meadow, Pitsea saw the purchase of a prefabricated building which was used as changing rooms. The building of the new A13 from Canvey to the Five Bells roundabout saw the compulsory purchase of the ground and the club's move to its current home at Crown Avenue, Pitsea. The ground was purchased from Basildon Development Corporation along with a prefabricated building which still serves as the dressing rooms. After the war years, once stability had come to the nation, many new sporting clubs sprang up. One such club was our own, BOWERS UNITED, started in 1946 by Bert Salmon, playing at Gun Meadow, Pitsea, in the Thurrock & Thameside Combination, he was to be joined a few years later by his brother Len Salmon, who passed away and will be sorely missed by everyone within the club. The biggest tribute Bowers Sport & Social Club could give him was to name his beloved football stadium after him. After winning the League Championship in 1958/59 we gained admission into the Essex Olympian League. Our prowess as a competitive and well organised club, brought with our move to Crown Avenue, the opportunity to gain Senior status

in 1974, which in turn, allowed us to qualify as members of The Essex Senior League. Since our membership, in that year, we have established our position within the League's top clubs, gaining several League Trophies, the most recent being under Manager Tony Cross where he won the League and Cup double in 1998, enhancing our own, and the League's reputation in County, Vase and National F.A.Cup competitions. A noteworthy part of club history is our home gate of 1880 against local rivals Billericay Town in the F.A.Vase. Pitsea was formed in 1970 by Mr Peter Feltham and was first known as "Pitsea Young Peoples Club". The average age of the players was about 15, but as there were very few youth leagues in the area at that time, they went straight into men's football in the third division of the Vange and District Sunday league.

After the first season they dropped the "Young Peoples Club" and became known as Pitsea Football Club. They soon climbed their way through the divisions and progressed to the Basildon Sunday League in 1975/76 season. They remained in this league and at one point had three teams running. They reached the top divisions of

this league in 1981/82 season and although at times against the odds they managed to remain in the top flight. Pitsea's determination paid off in the 1994/95 season when "The Bull Public House" became the new sponsor and the then owner, Mr John Jones took the helm, taking Pitsea to their first Senior League Treble. John Jones moved on from "The Bull" and the new owner Mr Chris La-Rocque continued the sponsorship and also became the chairman of the club. The 1995/96 season saw Amin Levitt take over the Managers mantle with help from big Dave Chaplin. The success continued with the treble in 1995/96 and with Shaun Scanlon stepping in to help Amin in 1996/97 season, Pitsea settled for the League and Cup double. Season 2004/05 saw a new name on the footballing map when Bowers United took Pitsea Football clubs name to produce BOWERS & PITSEA FOOTBALL CLUB, and with a new start and a new team at the helm maybe success is just around the corner because a strong link has been established with the local community and the clubs facilities offer the residence a large Clubhouse, Bar and Function room Together with a ground capacity for 2000+ spectators.


“ “Tonight we are back in cup action as we start our Essex Senior Cup campaign against Essex Senior League side Bowers & Pitsea and will be in the opposite corner of the encounter to our trip last Tuesday when we travelled to Grays Athletic in the Ryman League Cup. On that occasion we were classed as underdogs, but, tonight we have to be considered as favourites to go through, but, hopefully, our excellent win at Grays will remind the players just how easily it is for favourites to be toppled if they are not totally on their game. We are, of course, former winners of this competition, uniquely, without kicking a ball in anger, in the final as both our opponents in the other semi-final were disqualified after a brawl which saw their game abandoned. On Saturday, we came away from Soham with nothing

- deserving at the very least a point we lost all three, after dominating the majority of the game and taking the lead, we squandered numerous chances and paid the price. We have to make sure that we are not so generous tonight or we could end up with egg on our faces again. I am not just being loyal when I say, that I feel we have quality players all over the park and if we could only take more of the many opportunities we create every game, we would be up in the top ten at the very least. Apart from teams like Maldon & Grays who have large squads of experienced players, I feel there that our starting eleven and most on the bench are as good as any other sides in the division. We are often complimented on the standard of our football and we have proved going forward that we can destroy most teams, but, it is all about putting the chances away that makes the difference between decent sides and good ones - at the moment we are a decent team, but, on the verge of being a very good one. We seem to have got our defensive side more of less right and are not shipping goals

One other opponent is up against us tonight and that is the pitch. We have seen in our last two games, that given a good service to play on, we can play our football, but, sadly, on the Cricklefields pitch it requires a good few touches before our ball players can get into their stride. That will also help our opponents tonight to lessen the difference between the standards of Leagues we play in, so let us hope the side have the heads on straight and go for the kill, straight from the kick off.

playmaker who lists Hoddesdon Town

and Potters Bar Town amongst his

former clubs. Barker is a 28-year-old striker who has recently played for Hoddesdon Town,

Cockfosters and Hatfield Town.

Diorgu can play in midfield or as a striker and joined Ware from Ilford.

As many fans of Football League teams will tell you, drawing a Non-League team in the FA Cup brings mixed emotions. In theory it gives their team the best chance of passage through to the next round – but we all know in reality they are tricky affairs. And then there is that dread. That fear your team could be the upset. The one no one will ever forget and will be played in title sequences for ever more. Which is all great for us Non-League followers. The FA Cup may have lost some of its magic for those managers and clubs higher up the food chain but first round day is still a highlight of the football calendar. There are a lot to pick from but here are just a few FA Cup First Round shocks over the last ten years.

Southport 4-2 Notts County – 2002: Steve Pickford was Southport’s hero with two goals as the Football Conference Sandgrounders saw off County, who were struggling in the then-Division Two. The League side did have to play a large portion of the game with ten men after Darren Caskey was sent-off in the first-half but Southport still had to come back from two goals down.

Pickford started the comeback with a double – including a fine lob that had the Match of the Day pundits raving. Peter Thomson and Chris Lane scored the others to put the minnows into the second-round where they were knocked out by a Farnborough Town team that went on to meet Arsenal in the Fourth Round. Hornchurch 2-0 Darlington – 2003: Ryman Premier Hornchurch were well backed financially but take nothing away, seeing off Third Division Darlington was a great upset. Goals in each half from Steve West – a penalty – and Vinnie John booked a Second Round date with Tranmere Rovers in front of the TV cameras. The Urchins won promotion to the Conference South at the end of the season. Staines 4-3 on penalties Stockport County – 2007: The Staines Massive were separated from Stockport by three leagues when they met in 2007. Marc Charles-Smith hit an equaliser in the 1-1 draw at Edgeley Park to ensure a second crack at their Wheatsheaf Park home. Adrian Toppin gave the Ryman Premier side a tenth-minute lead, but just as it looked like they might hang on Matty McNeil popped

up with a late leveller. But the drama wasn’t over and when keeper Shaun Allaway made two spot-kick saves in the penalty shoot-out he became the Swans’ No.1 hero. Histon 1-0 Swindon – 2008: Histon’s rise from village team to within a whisker of the Football League was remarkable. Their FA Cup feats – they went on to beat the mighty Leeds United in the Second Round – were even more so. Striker Danny Wright grabbed the second-half winner to send Steve Fallon’s locally grown side through. Northwich Victoria 1-0 Charlton – 2009: With all the difficulties Northwich Victoria are going through right now it is hard to believe this shock happened just three years ago.The Vics couldn’t have landed a much bigger tie at this stage than the League One side. Manager Andy Preece made the perfect substitute with Wayne Riley notching the only goal of the game just five minutes after coming on.


OLAWALE OJELABI - MANAGERNow in his second spell at the club. Wale had a distinguished playing career, appearing for Chesham, Maidenhead, St Albans, Horsham and Enfield Town amonst others. Was made player manager in January 2009, but left the role at the start of the 2009/10 season. Rejoined in December 2010.

COLIN WALTON - ASSISTANT MANAGERJoined in July 2012, Colin had been manager at Ilford for 2 ½ years having joined them from Clapton. Colin is a firm believer in the Respect programme.

MATT WALDRON - COACH / DEFENDERDefender now in his third spell as at the club. His first spell was in his 2001-2 season under Colin Richards, but left at the end of the season to join up with past Chairman, Terry Back. When Back became chairman of Forest, it signaled the return of fan’s favorite Waldron, who played almost every game at the back under Danny Honeyball. Unfortunately for Forest, Matt followed Honeyball to Arlesey Town, but is now back for a third time. Was voted Clubman of the year for the 2006-7 season.

LUCELTA EUGENE - PHYSIOTHERAPISTAlso joined from Ilford to fulfil this vital role. Was a "Gamesmaker" at the ExCel in the 2012 Olympics.

AARON OMAND - GOALKEEPERYoung ‘keeper who joined the club in July 2011. Has experience with Chehsunt, Heybridge Swifts and Leyton amongst others.

ADRIAN GRIFFIN - DEFENDERAnother close season signing who was previously with Wycombe Wanderers.

BEN HEAD - DEFENDERSigned in August 2012. Was previously with Billericay Town and featured for them in our first pre-season friendly.

DMITRI LARIN - DEFENDERSigned in August 2012. Most recently, he has been playing for London Tigers.

INAKI ORDONO - DEFENDER

Spanish defender, who, since he arrived in the UK has played for both Kingstonian and Epsom & Ewell. Signed for the the club from Epsom & Ewell, in late November 2011. Has impressed in his early appearances for the club. Scored his first goal for the club with a beautiful free-kick against Cheshunt. Was voted Most Improved Player last season.

ELTON SACKEY - DEFENDERReturned to Forest in January 2011 after first appearing during the 2007-8 season. Has played for a host of non-league clubs including Maidenhead United and Lewes. Was an ever-present last season, and was voted as the Supporters' Player of the Season

ADRIAN CLIFTON - MIDFIELDERJoined the club in March 2012, from Romford, where he had progressed from the reserves in to the first team squad.Scored on his debut against Tilbury, from the penalty spot. Has recently been apointed team captain.

JACK LEACHMAN - MIDFIELDERSigned in July 2012, was previously with Eton Manor.

ANVI ISLAMI - MIDFIELDERSigned in August 2012. Was previously with FC Ramiz Sadiku in Kosova, and prior to that played for FC Prishtina.

ARIAN RETKOCERI - MIDFIELDERIndustrious player, signed from Billericay Town

LUKE STANLEY - MIDFIELDEROne of many players making a return for a third spell at Forest. Midfield player with excellent dead ball skills, he first arrived in season 2008/2009, after spells at Barkingsdide and Tilbury. Left at the start of the 2010/2011 season for Aveley, but returned in January 2011, when Wale

Ojelabi was re-appointed as manager. Started 2011/12 season back at Aveley, before re-signing for us in December 2011. By the end of last season he had clocked up 96 starts.

ARMINDO DOS SANTOS - FORWARDSigned in July 2012. Was playing with Hamar FC in Iceland last season.

DOMINIC OKANU - FORWARDA recent singing from Clapton. Made an impressive debut against Cheshunt, and returns for the 2012-13 season.

CHRIS TAYLOR - FORWARDRecently returned to the club where he first gained first-team expereince during the 2005-6 season. He came through the Barking Abbey youth set-up, and appeared in the FA Youth Cup side, as well as Capital and Suburban League sides. When Hakan Heyrettin moved to Thurrock, the midfielder, who can equally play up front, found first-

team chances limited, and moved to Tilbury at the start of the 2008-9 season. Now 24, Taylor made a substantial number of appearances for the Dockers, but again found first-team chances hard to come by, so moved to back to Forest.

COREY WHITELY - FORWARDSigned in July 2012, was previously with Boreham Wood. Has impressed in pre-season.

Time to get on our travellin' shoes again, starting with an evening game at Needham Market. This small town has two architectural wonders: the railway station and the parish church, which appears to have had an elongated garden shed plonked on top of it - in fact it's the unprepossessing exterior of a quite astonishing roof. Beerwise, the Rampant Horse (near the station) is a pleasant establishment once you've worked out how to open the entrance gate; the interior is a bit like a 1970s guest house, but the beer is fine and included the rarely-seen Ansells Mild last time the Beer Hunter called in. The Swan opposite (Greene King) is so-so, but go up the High Street towards the church and you come to Bug's Bar - the unpromisingly-named but quite excellent front bar of the Limes Hotel, which does very good food as well as good beers.

Then we're off to Witham, for the first time since we played our final few home games there a few years ago after we were booted out of Wadham Lodge. The part of town to head for here is Newland Street, which contains the Battesford Court (Wetherspoons), the George, the Red Lion, the Spread Eagle and the Swan. Be warned, however - the football ground is out on the edge of town, so allow

around 20-30 minutes walking time to get there. On our last visit, the Beer Hunter did notice a nice little pub about halfway to the ground (which was then closed for refurbishment), but it doesn't feature on the current list at www.beerintheevening.com , so maybe it's gone the way of many other small backstreet pubs. Finally, we hit the road again and head for Chatham, where there is only one decent pub worth recommending: the Alexandra, just down the hill from the station, which has Shepherd Neame plus guest ales. There's an even bigger hike to the ground from here, and it's all uphill, so allow about 40 minutes for this one!

By CarMake your way to the A12 towards Colchester and Ipswich. On the outskirts of Ipswich turn left onto the A14 towards Bury St Edmunds. After about 8 miles join the A140 (Kettle Lane) for about ½ mile and then join the B1078 (Coddenham Road) for about a mile. Take the 3rd left into Pump Street, then left onto B1113 (Ipswich Road), then right onto B1078 (Barking Road), and right again onto Chainhouse Road. Then 4th right onto Quinton Road. Ground is on the left.

By Public TransportBy Greater Anglia train to Ipswich and change for Needham market. From the Station walk to High Street and turn left into Ipswich Road, then right into barking Road, right into Chainhouse Road, 4th right into Quinton Road; ground is on the left. By CarMake your way to the A12 (eastbound) and leave onto the B1389 (Hatfield Road). After about a mile turn left into Spinks Lane. At the end of the road turn right into Highfields Road. By Public TransportFrom Liverpool Street, Stratford or Romford make your way to Billericay. Then, due to engineering work you will need to catch the bus replacement to Witham (allow 30 minutes for the bus journey). From the station turn left, and take first left into Collingwood Road. By Public TransportMake your way to Stratford and catch the Docklands Light Railway to Stratford International. Change to Southeastern train eastbound to Chatham. Take bus 101or 176 from Chatham Station to the Ground.
