What a Fabulous October Hurricanes…

Our students are diving deep into their learning in all subjects. I’ve seen students creating surveys, presenting about themselves in French, solv-ing number problems and researching about Canada pre-Confederation. There’s a love of learning at WEH! This week on Wednesday students in grades 4 to 7 are participating in MATHLETES math competition and games. Students will have a ton of fun completing math challenges and competing against each other. Thank you for supporting the SCC Fresh From the Farm fundraiser. Funds raised from this will be used to support programs.

There are many programs and events in our school that rely on commu-nity volunteers. We are so happy to have an active volunteer group at WEH. All of our volunteers who will spend time with students require a volunteer police check.

Message From Administration Continued... Thank you to all of the community for following our Kiss n’ Ride procedures. Follow-ing the rules and being patient helps things move smoother and keeps our children safe. Safety First! Our Terry Fox Run was a huge success! We are still counting the total money raised for the Terry Fox Foundation. Many thanks to the volunteers who came out to sup-port our students. October is designated Islamic History Month and Hispanic Heritage Month. As we move through October, many of our families in the community are celebrating holi-days, including Thanksgiving (October 9) and Diwali (October 18 – 22). We wish all of our students safe and happy celebrations!

Yours in education,

Mrs. Robertson

Parents, please continue to discuss road safety with your son/daughter, and the dangers of cross-ing roads between parked cars and buses. We must not let convenience, or inattentiveness, cre-ate a safety concern for our children. We have several staff out on duty during entry and dismissal times, wearing safety vests and helping students cross our driveway at crosswalks. Please wait for them before having a student enter or exit a vehicle Please check your child’s agenda for information about Drop off, Parking and Crossing Guard times and procedures.

Dogs on

School Property

While pets can be valued family members, we ask that you please leave your dog at home, or keep it leashed on the sidewalk, off of school property. Even a puppy can have a ‘bad day’, and many of our students feel unsafe around dogs, large or small. It is best to avoid unnecessary accidents or uneasiness.Thank you for your cooperation and under-standing.

On October 24, 2017 schools across Ontario will participate in Dress Purple Day to share the message that child abuse and neglect can be prevented and that help is avail-able.

The Dress Purple Day campaign is led by Children's Aid Societies, a key partner in keeping children and youth safe.

This year the Ontario Association of Children's Aid Societies (OACAS) launched an excit-ing initiative to help students and teachers engage in important conversations during the month of October about their safety and well-being.

Classroom resources are available to help teachers discuss with students their safety and well-being, and how to identify helping adults in the community.

The theme is "It takes a village to keep kids safe." Resources are available at oacas.org.

Your child's school will be participating in Dress Purple Day and will learn how the vil-lage they live in helps to keep them safe.

We hope that you will encourage your child to wear something purple on October 24 to recognize the day. If this is not possible, speak to your child's teacher for other purple options.

To learn more about Dress Purple Day and the Child Abuse Prevention Month cam-paign, please visit the OACAS website at oacas.org.

Thank you for your support.

October is Child Abuse Prevention Month
