egas PBS schedules documentaries that expand our knowledge of the
world’s diverse populations, religions and cultures; ranging from Streetball
Hafla to Many Rivers to Cross or Finding Your Roots to The Story
of the Jews with Simon Schama. This month we explore elements of
the heritage of nearly 30% of our Southern Nevada population during
national Hispanic Heritage Month.
On Two Fronts: Latinos & Vietnam examines the experience of Hispanics during a
war that deeply divided families and the nation. Framing the documentary are mem-
oirs of two siblings who stood on opposite sides of the Vietnam War, one a POW and
the other a protestor at home. It’s scheduled on Tuesday, September 22 at 10 p.m.
Pope Francis has been both praised as a reformer and criticized as a revolutionary.
Using first-hand interviews with friends, contemporaries and students, Pope Francis –
The Sinner explores how an Argentinian Jesuit and self-described “sinner” named
Jorge Mario Bergoglio became the most
powerful figure in Catholicism, and how he is
working to modernize a church facing a mul-
titude of issues. Pope Francis – The Sinner is
on Monday, September 21 at 10 p.m. and
repeats on Sunday, September 27 at 11 a.m.
This month we’ll also discover the life and
work of Mexican-American photographer Pedro E. Guerrero, who collaborated with
Frank Lloyd Wright and sculptors Alexander Calder and Louise Nevelson. American
Masters: Pedro E. Guerrero: A Photographer’s Journey is scheduled on Friday,
September 18 at 10 p.m.

Who has not spent a Saturday morningwatching Mickey Mouse and Pluto, whosebeloved childhood movies don't includeMary Poppins or The Little Mermaid ordoes not treasure a memory of a family tripto Disneyland? These ideas and many moresprang from the ingenious mind of thisentrepreneurial and cultural icon. No singlefigure shaped American popular culture inthe 20th century more than he. Now, join usfor an unprecedented look at the life andlegacy of one of America’s most enduringand influential storytellers in a new two-part film. The special features rare archivalfootage from the Disney vaults and scenesfrom some of his greatest films. Also includ-ed are interviews with biographers and his-torians, animators and artists who workedon Snow White and other early films anddesigners who helped create Disneyland.
“For many Americans – and for me – thetwinkle and swish of the Sunday nightDisney logo was pure magic. It was an invi-tation to a special event,” said Beth Hoppe,Chief Programming Officer and GeneralManager, General Audience Programmingfor PBS. “For my kids, introducing themto animated Disney movies from Beautyand the Beast to The Lion King brought usgreat joy and taught them life lessons. Nowviewers of all ages can learn about the lifeand legacy of the man behind the magic andhis continuing impact on our lives and cul-ture.”
In 1966 – the year Walt Disney died –240 million people saw a Disney movie, 100million tuned in weekly to a Disney televi-sion program, 80 million bought Disneymerchandise and almost seven million visit-ed Disneyland. Nearly fifty years later, hisreach remains enormous. Few creative fig-ures, before or since, have held such a long-lasting place in American life and popularculture.
From Steamboat Willie to Pinocchio toMary Poppins, Disney’s movies grew out ofhis own life experiences. He told stories ofoutsiders struggling for acceptance andbelonging while questioning the conventionsof class and authority. As Disney rose toprominence and gained financial security, his work became increasingly celebratory ofthe American way of life that made hisunlikely success possible.
Yet despite the success he achieved, hewas driven and restless, a demanding per-fectionist on whom decades of relentlesswork and chain-smoking would take theirtoll. He wanted his films to make people feeldeeply, yet he often buried his own emo-tions. Aspiring to create great artistic films,he felt he wasn’t taken seriously by themovie industry and was stung when criticspanned his productions. Never satisfied withhis previous efforts, he always pushed for-ward to a “new adventure,” but his atten-tion to detail and quest for innovation fre-quently meant delays and cost overruns. When his employees organized and went onstrike, Disney felt betrayed and didn’tunderstand how people who worked for him

Framing the documentary are mem-oirs of two siblings, Everett and DeliaAlvarez, who stood on opposite sides of theVietnam War – one as a POW and the otherprotesting at home. Other stories deepen thenarrative: in Greenlee County, Arizona, min-ers’ children fought and died for their coun-try in devastating proportions. The programraises issues that remain relevant today. Incommunities where there were few alterna-tives to service, war impacted every house-hold – especially amongst Latinos. How didthis affect the young men who served on thefront lines? How did it impact their commu-nities? During the Vietnam War, Latinosbegan asking for the first time, “What is thetrue cost of war and the appropriate price ofcitizenship?”

This intriguing special tells thestory of an enigmatic, vastly talented andsometimes troubled man who, through hardwork, perseverance and almost majesticchutzpah, fooled the art world for nearly athird of a century. Over the course of 30years, Landis successfully presented hisfakes as the original work of Paul Signac,Pablo Picasso, Dr. Seuss and many others. But unlike most art forgers, Landis wasnever in it for the money; he gave away hisforgeries. One of his primary motivations, however, was universal: he wanted accept-ance and respect.

Pedro E. Guerrero – A Photographer’sJourney:American Masters Friday, September 18 at 9 p.m.
Discover the extraordinary life and work of Pedro E. Guerrero (1917-2012),
a photographer who took thousands of photographs and left an audio lega-
cy of nearly 15 hours of interviews. This film tells, in Guerrero’s words, the
story of a Mexican-American boy, raised in segregated Mesa, Arizona, who
goes on to a remarkable international
career. With his outsider’s eye, he pro-
duced insightful and iconic portraits of
three of the most important artists of the
20th century: Frank Lloyd Wright,
Alexander Calder and Louise Nevelson.
Through his lens and voice, the program
explores Guerrero’s unique perspective on
life, art, architecture and the artists he
encountered.

On Two Fronts: Latinos & VietnamTuesday, September 22 at 10 p.m.
The Latino experience during the Vietnam War, a conflict that placed its heav-
iest burden on working class youth, is examined. The program raises issues
that remain relevant today. In communities where there were few alternatives
to service, war impacted every household especially amongst Latinos. How did
this affect the young men who served on the front lines? How did it impact
their communities? During the
conflict, Latinos began asking for
the first time, “What are the true
costs of war and the appropriate
price of citizenship?”

Pope Francis:The SinnerMonday, September 21 at 10 p.m.
Since his election to the papacy
in 2013, Pope Francis has been
hailed as a revolutionary, garnering affection from believers and non-believers
alike with his simple, down-to-earth style. However, the new pope is a man of
contradictions with a divisive reputation as an authoritarian provincial
amongst his fellow Jesuits in Argentina. The insightful special features inter-
views with Bergoglio’s friends, contemporaries and students to explore his
controversial past and the daunting task of simultaneously reforming the
troubled Catholic Church and keep it from falling apart. Repeats on Sunday,
September 27 at 11 a.m.

E. O. Wilson – Of Ants and MenWednesday, September 30 at 9 p.m.
Examine the remarkable life and groundbreaking ideas of biologist E.O.
Wilson, founder of the discipline of sociobiology, world authority on
insects, and Pulitzer-prize winning writer on the subject of human
nature. Wilson notes that ants will defend their nest vigorously, even
violently to the death, if need be. He argues that the nest is central to
understanding the ecological dominance not only of ants, but also of
human beings. Wilson is not only one of the greatest scientists and
thinkers of our time, but also an endearing personality.

Three Faiths, One God: Judaism, Christianity, IslamSunday, September 13 at 9 p.m.
The religious beliefs and practices shared by Jews, Christians and Muslims are exam-
ined to illustrate how many in the Abrahamic faith communities are dealing with his-
torical conflicts. The special also charts their dedication to facilitating understanding
and respect. Capturing a broad range of voices and ideas of ordinary people and
respected scholars in the interfaith field, the documentary contrasts the religious
practices of the three faiths. The program features a dramatic and moving example of
reconciliation as the father of murdered Wall Street Journal reporter opens a dialogue
between Muslims and Jews to create better understanding between the two faiths.
In the same spirit, a conflict-resolution workshop engages in an intensive dialogue as
they attempt to dispel myths, misconceptions and stereotypes about their religions.
