A Lot Is Going On at Archdale Isn’t it great that October has thirty-one days?

I say that because we have plenty going on at Archdale United Methodist Church during the month of October.

For starters, October 2 is World Communion Sunday. In a show of unity with believers around the world, we will be celebrating the Lord’s Supper.

On Saturday, October 8, we will welcome thousands of pumpkins to our property as our Pumpkin Patch gets underway. Pumpkins will be on sale from October 10 to October 31.

Brunswick Stew will be prepared by the United Methodist Men and will be available on Saturday, October 15 & Sunday, October 16. Pre-orders are highly recommended.

Our annual charge conference cluster gathering will be at Trinity Memorial UMC on Sunday, October 16, at 4:30.

Our Fall Festival takes place on Saturday, October 22, complete with lots of food items and a children’s carnival.

Renovations to our sanctuary will begin in late mid-October. A new, elevated sound system will certainly enhance our sanctuary and the quality of our worship services.

That is a whole lot going on!

With all of this activity, let’s make sure and adhere to these words of scripture: “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus” (Hebrews 12:1).

In everything, let’s remember Him and serve Him.

Cub Scout Pack 19 News!!

Pack 19 had a great September and an awesome start to the scouting year! Recruiting has gone well, as we now have almost 30 boys in the Pack. Every Monday there are close to 25 families visiting our church! Feel free to stop by around 7 to make them feel welcome! We are getting ready for a big fall – with camping, a night hike and a lot of work on our advance-ments to rank. Dear Friends at AUMC, Thank you for being a part of our 2011 Fill The Bus campaign. Through your generosity, 21 students at Archdale Elementary School received backpacks filled with basic requirements for the school year. We distributed loose supplies throughout the area to other students and then prepared boxes for teachers to draw from during the school year. We estimate we directly helped over 270 students in the Archdale-Trinity area, providing all the individual needs on their supply lists. Totals are still in process for other areas of the county, but we estimate we will impact over 500 students, making this our most successful school supply drive yet. We say it all the time, but it’s so true: We couldn’t do what we do if not for you! Thanks again!

Dear Archdale United Methodist Church, Thank you so much for allowing us to have our yard sale on your church property again this year. With any event we always trust in our Lord to guide us and direct us. With the proceeds from the yard sale, we sent four children to Summer Church Camp. Troop 19 would like to send out BIG congratulations to new Eagle Scout Angel Atilano-Pacheco. Angel's Ea-gle project was widening trails at Camp Douglas Long and putting benches on the trails for hikers. The troop also went camping to Woodfield West. Webelos scout Andrew Hamilton went camping with them. Andrew had a great time camping with the troop. Strive Together in One Spirit

As I was thinking about what I would write in the October Archways, I kept thinking about all of the opportunities for evangelism that come up in the fall every year. We just completed a successful Take Two sale and gave away free water in our church booth at the Bush Hill Festival. Both of these activities were opportunities for us to show the community that we cared about others and that we enjoyed doing things together. I think that everyone that participated in these two events had fun and represented our church well.

October 2nd is the High Point Crop Walk for Hunger. Their goal is 700 walkers and $30,000. Our youth will be walking in the Crop Walk as usual, and they need our support. All the walkers have to have sponsors, so they need your MONEY. Make out a check to “Crop Walk” and give it to one of

the youth on Sunday. They are easy to find – just look on the front pews! Besides helping the hungry, you can use it as a tax deduction. It doesn’t get any better than that! What an easy way to help the com-munity and to enable our youth to walk side by side and represent our church.

On October 8th at 1:00 the pumpkins are coming! We always need a lot of people to unload the

truck, and it is pretty hard work, but we make it fun by talking and laughing. We have people of all ages working, and we appreciate the boy scouts helping, too. Then we need people to sit in the tent to sell

the pumpkins. We really get to interact with the community in this way. For many, it is a family tradi-tion to come to our church to select their pumpkin. Many others bring their child dressed in his or her Halloween costume, and take pictures with the beautiful backdrop of pumpkins. So grab a friend and sign up for a time slot to sell pumpkins! I like to tell everyone how ALL of our money we make is given to a good cause. It also helps the Native Americans that grow the pumpkins and gourds. Most people are glad to pay our price when they hear where the money is going. To hundreds of school children we are known as the “Pumpkin Patch church”. We also need storytellers to entertain the school and day-care groups. All you have to do is show up at the designated time and read aloud!

October 22nd is our Fall Festival and Children’s Carnival. They will need people to work, set up, and clean up. They need cakes and baked goods, canned goods, and items to auction and sell at the Fall Festival. Even if you cannot make anything, come and spend some money! Everyone can do something for the Fall Festival. Look for the flyers on the church doors to see how you can help. The Children’s Carnival will have inflatables, face painting and games. The kids will have a great time. This will bring a lot of community people to our church, and we want them to see how well we work together and love each other! To have a successful Fall Festival and Children’s Carnival, we need everyone!

I receive a weekly devotional from the United Methodist Fellowship. Last week the scripture was from Philippians 1: 27-30. Paul tells the Philippians, “Only, live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel

of Christ, so that, whether I come and see you or am absent and hear about you, I will know that

you are standing firm in one spirit, striving side by side with one mind for the faith of the gospel.”

When we work side by side in any of the projects of Archdale United Meth-odist Church, we are showing the world that we are with one mind for the

faith of the gospel. October gives us several chances to stand firm in one

spirit. Get up and stand with us!

They enjoy their Sunday School lessons, being together, watching out for each other, and helping others. They meet downstairs beside the nursery.

They make delicious chicken pies and give all of the proceeds to the church or to help someone in our community. They have several great teachers and class socials, and they help and support each other whenever the need arises.

They are a diverse group – some married, single, divorced, and widowed. They are all different ages. They have some great class lessons, great teachers, great fellowship, and have the now famous Soup and Sand-wich Lunch fund raiser for the church.

Most of the people in this class have children of various ages, so they are very active in children’s projects like the Take Two Sales twice a year, as well as other church and community projects. We meet in the Wesley Room downstairs at 9:45. This is to give their teacher, Cheryl Traylor, time to play the piano for the Friendship Class!

The Young Singles ClassThe Young Singles ClassThe Young Singles ClassThe Young Singles Class is also a very new class. Their aim is to get college age and young adults to continue in Sunday School. This is a great class for our college students to continue that fellowship they developed in the high school class or for new young adults to our church. They meet downstairs in the prayer chapel.

After the study was completed, they liked being together so much; they stayed together as a Sunday School Class. This Class is for any age adult that wants to join with others for support on their journey of life.

AUMC ADVENT BOOKLET Just as October means “the pumpkins are coming”...it also means that Advent is near! And Advent means…it’s time to start putting together our 2011 Advent devotional booklet,

“Come, Lord Jesus.” If you think you would like to submit something for the AUMC 2011 Advent booklet, it’s not too soon to get started. Once again this year we would like to hear from adults and children of all ages. And guess what? You don’t even have to be a member of Archdale UMC to participate. Rae Askew is the hostess and our program will be from those who have read books on the

UMW Reading List. This can be a very brief description of the book and the category of each

book read. The Unit only has to read four books for Plan I, one book from each of four

categories. Last year, we successfully completed 10 books which qualified the Unit to meet

the Plan II categories. Also, Rosa Allred will present a short video as a Mission Today goal.

Storytelling in the Pumpkin Patch Monday, October 10 thru Thursday, October 27

Storytelling Hours are:

9:00am / 10:00am / 11:00am

Monday - Friday

Storytellers will read, discuss, sing, and enrich for at least 30 minutes. This allows 30 minutes for

storytelling and 30 minutes for visiting the Pumpkin Patch and departure time.

If you know a group of children that would enjoy Storytelling in the Patch, contact the Church Office at 431-7111

to schedule a visit.

Search & Reflect Class will hold a Soup & Sandwich Lunch Sunday, November 6th

After Sunday School or After Worship Service In the Fellowship Hall

perfectly and without help during Joy Worship. They were each awarded a $5 McDonald’s gift card.

WHEAT

Wheat is used to represent the bread (the body of Christ) in Holy Communion. “I am the bread of life” (John 6:48). In the parable of the wheat and the weeds (Matthew 13:24-30), Jesus uses wheat to represent believers, while weeds represent unbelievers.
