Interview Insights

Disclaimer: I really struggled in finding sequences and steps to creating thehabit of walking 30 in my interviews. I want to share my observations about Motivation, ability, and triggers though.

Pattern: People who developed a habit of walking with entertainment

Page 2: Walking Interviews

Pattern: was juggling a ball while walkingReason: “Walking is my only form of transportation” Motivation: -“If it was more beautiful outside, people would want to walk. Like today.”- “If walking or running was more challenging/interesting, like juggling, I’d do it”

Person #1: Male, 50-60 yrs, juggler

Page 3: Walking Interviews

Pattern: was talking on phone (likes to either call, listen to ipod, or finish up texting while walking)Reason: Alternative way to get to destinationsMotivation: -- “I can get in touch with people I don’t normally get in touch with”-- Walking makes it so that you don’t have to pay attention to avoiding pedestrians, or stopping at stop signs. I have a moment to think and let my mind wander-“I like walking for fun… fun is not going to my destination in a hurry.” -“I get excited for any walk, it gives me moments to myself”

Person #2: Female, 20’s, student

Pattern: was walking with musicReason: “Walking slows things down for me”Habit: - “I don’t like biking as much as walking. When I came to campus, it was easier to just walk everywhere when we started freshman year because of the craziness. I learned to love it even more, and even now with my bike, I still prefer walking and getting the chance to listen to music or make phone calls.”

Person #3: Female, 20’s, student

What was strange was that every person who was walking was being entertained (~4/24 people did not have entertainment in 10 min of data collection) -people walking alone without entertainment seemed unhappy

- What does this say about motivation? - very few single runners without entertainment-Everyone had buddies, music, phones, strollers, dogs, or even juggling balls.

- Multitasking a factor of ability or motivation?
