For the Gophers theschedule is bound tobe a hard one. Oklahoma Agric ul tu raland Mechanical College will appear in theStadium next Saturday with a team ratedone of the strongest inthe Missouri ValleyConference, and thefollowing week Dr.Spears will take hi ssquad to Bloomington,
Wisconsin, coachednow by Glen Thistlewaite, late of Northwestern, will be theguest a t Minnesota'sknitting bee on October 29, Dad's Day .After three years ofties, Minnesota flowedover the dam last falland nosed out theBadgers 16 to lOinthe last few minutesof play, when MallyNydahl ran back apunt through the entire Wisconsin team.Up to that momentCAPTAIN JOESTING the game was seem
ingly lost to Minnesota, and the Wis-ndiana , for the season's first trip, firstconference game, and first meeting withthe Hoosiers of Indiana University since1922. In that year Minnesota was vic-torious.
Homecoming Will Be EarlyHomecoming has been set for an early
date this year, October 22 , for the jointreason that pleasant weather is to belooked for at that time and because onthat day Iowa, for years one of thestaunchest of gridiron foes, will send itsstout warriors to carry the Black andGold against the Maroon and Gold ofAlma Mater. Captain Nelson, tackle, will lead Iowa this year. That state is reported to be without the services of "Cow-
consin team made matters so warm anduncomfortable that every effort will bemade to have the team at the top of itsform by the time of this fall's fracas.Wisconsin is said to have one of thestrongest sophomore delegations in itshistory, together with many returningveterans of high caliber.
Breathing Spell on Nov. 5Following three conference games on
as many Saturdays, Captain Joestingand his fellow players will find a breathin g spell on November 5th, when theyhave nothing to do but journey to SouthBend, Indiana, home of Mr. Studebaker

. senting the University of Notre Dame. a week later. This team has been creating quite an Following last winter's regrettableathletic stir among the many colleges for happening when Bennie Oosterbaan gotwhich Indiana is famous, and there is a hold of a fumble and ran many yards tolikelihood that Minnesota may encounter a touchdown whereby Michigan beatopposition of a severe type. Yes Minnesota 7 to 6 in one of the hardestsir!
Down at Des Moines, Iowa , DrakeUniversity has been burning up theleague known as the Missouri Valleyconference in recent years. Inasmuch asit is coached by one Oscar Solem, oftenknown as "Ossie" , who happens to beone of the brightest stars of other daysin Minnesota ' s football heavens , theDrake eleven was signed to meet M i n n e ~ sota in the Stadium November 12th.If Drake goes as well this year as it didlast this will more than limber up Dr.Spears' kindergarten members for the
games in the long series between them ,the Gopher-Wolverine contest at AnnArbor, November 19th , promises to bea stiff one . Many would have said beforelast year's game that Minnesota wasabout to break the Michigan hoodoo. This year, most experienced observerswill withhold judgment. Michigan willhave to beat Ohio State in an earlyseason game to remain in the championship 'running . I f she does, and Minnesotahappens to come through against Iowaand Wisconsin , the game at Ann Arborwill be memorable.

All Americans from MinnesotaFIVE Minnesota players, including. Captain Herbert Joesting of the 1927team, have been selected as All-Americanrepresentatives of the game of football .In this connection it is notable that in1910 when James C . Walker was selected by Walter Camp as All-Americanguard , he and John F. McGovern, AllAmerican quarterback in 1909, were twoamong only nine men from any part of .the West who had been selected for thathonor. Four of the nine were fromMichigan- Heston, Schultz , Wells andBenbrook; and three were from Chicago,Herschberger , Eckersall and Steffen.
John F. McGovern , first of Minnesota's All-Americans, is still one ofthe most loyal supporters of Minnesota football, in hiscapacity of sportseditor of The Minneapolis Journal .
McGOVERN McGovern enteredthe University from Arlington, Minn. ,and played on the 1908 , 1909 and 1910teams, being captain of the team in 1909.
James C. Walker , guard in 1910 and1911,wasthesecondman selecte d byWalter Camp fromMinnesota as anA l l -Ame r i c a nplayer. Walker wasone of the finestguards ever to playon a western field ,or for that matter,in any part of the WALKER
country. He played only two years atMinnesota, going later to the medicalcollege of the University of Virginia, from which he was graduated in 1914.
BASTON
Alber t Baston ,end, and receivingman in the famousforward pass combination of Wymanto Baston whichplayed so large apart in making thefame of Dr . H . L.Williams' famous1916 eleven, was the
third player from Minnesota to be namedan All-American . Like McGovern,Baston has kept up his interest in Minnesota football. He has recently returnedto Minneapolis and entered the automobile business.
Earl Martineau was the last Minnesotan to be selectedon Camp 's mythica l team before thedeath of the famousfootbal l exper t .Marty starred asfew backfield menhave been able todo, fighting againstodds in many gamesand reeling off his MARTINEAUfamous, uodging runs for hundreds ofyards each season that he played.Marty's last year, 1923, found himcaptain , and it was accepted as a matterof course in the football world whenCamp made him an All-American.

sending a 200 pound line into the battle .Kochian is a letterman , though, andweighs enough to hold the average up.The center problem of last year is notbothering either. There are at leastthree men qualified to hold down the job.Benser was injured before the schedulewas completed last November, andHalvorson was ' switched from guard tocenter where he starred against Mar-quette. A sophomore, McMillan , alsohas to be considered.
The backfield was pretty well cleanedout by graduation last spring and thenGordon Moore, sensational half whohad one more year to play, did not returnto school. This left only Boyd andThomas who had earned letters, andThomas cannot be used for anythingexcept kicking.
Boyd did not gain a place in theregular lineup last year until near theend of the schedule . Then he landedwith all his weight of 190 pounds .Rockwell must find three other men togo with him. More than that, prac-tically every back from the 1926 fresh-man squad must make good to give theneeded reserve power, but he claims tohave the greatest layout of sophomorebackfield material the school has everboasted.
Among the outstanding ground gainersis Mike Knauf of Moorhead, Minn. , 181pound athlete , who is getting muchattention as a successor to Don Nemic ,fullback. He is a powerful fellow withworlds of drive and good football sense .Harold Westerdahl, former St. LouisPark high school quarterback , andMacalester freshman quarterback, isanother excellent prospect as is Kirkness,of Valley City , one of the fastest men onthe field.
