WALK TO SCHOOL

2

On August 12 a few Kids & Co students along with phy

ed teacher Kim Pierson, and SHIP coordinator Tracy

Gilsvik finally got some kid-created, colorful, temporary

sidewalk stickers out that encourage walking and

wheeling to school.

This project, to create engaging signage along a route

for students, started over a year ago with the support of

local law enforcement, Statewide Health Improvement

Partnership (SHIP), the City of Two Harbors, and school

staff. Within that time, Arrowhead Regional Development

Commission created an easy-to-navigate safe route;

students learned about the benefits of walking and

“wheeling” (some people get around by wheel chair,

bike, scooter, and other modes, of course); a Minnehaha

sidewalk sticker art contest was held; all the students

got to vote on their favorite; the winning design was

reproduced in sticker form and then never got out on the

sidewalks! The winter left ice and snow for a long time

and in fact a planned day to adhere stickers in May was

interrupted by another snow day! Finally, they’ll be out

for the upcoming school year.

But why encourage kids to walk and bike to school?

Here are just a few reasons:

• Students arrive alert and able to focus on school.

• They are more likely to be a healthy body weight

which supports overall health.

• Students are less likely to suffer from depression

and anxiety when they get this regular form of

physical activity.

• Students who walk and bike to school demonstrate

improved test scores and better school performance.

• Kids will also remind you that walking and biking

supports clean air and reduces traffic on our streets.

• It can be kind of fun!

The 2019 - 2020 school year has begun and we

are excited for an outstanding school year!

You know, this is a great time of year. It is a

new beginning and the start of something

special. We have an excellent school board,

administrators and support staff. We have

added some great new teachers to go along

with the wonderful ones we already have. You

can read about our new teachers in this edition

of the Good News.

As professionals and as a team, we are

striving to lead our students in the direction

of SUCCESS! Have you ever heard the saying,

“it takes a village to raise a child”? Well, we

are that village. We will instill in them the

determination and drive to reach their highest

potential. It is our responsibility to guide and

teach our students what they need to know to

accomplish their goals academically.

I encourage parents and community members

to come to our schools to attend concerts,

athletic events, or to volunteer. There are great

things taking place in the Lake Superior School

District schools.

Our facilities are looking great. Summer staff

did an outstanding job getting the buildings

ready for the school year. We have done a lot

of painting throughout the district. Check out

the sensory improvements in the Minnehaha

flooring. The William Kelley has a fresh look in

the parking lots. The Two Harbors track and

field complex is ready for the football and track

seasons.

The district is looking for bus drivers. This is a

great opportunity to work with the children of

your community. We need drivers for our extra-

curricular events and substitutes for our daily

bus routes. If you have an interest in becoming

a school bus driver please contact the district

office, 218-834-8201 x 8216.

Thank you for supporting the students of Lake

Superior School District.

If you have any questions, suggestions or

concerns regarding the schools or the district

please contact the Lake Superior School

District office at 218-834-8201 or by email at

[email protected].

The 2019/2020 school year has started! We are excited to share the upcoming year with all of you and watch students grow and learn throughout the year. This year we are updating and revising Health Office policies using the most up to date ‘best practice’ guidelines provided by the Minnesota Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control. These are evidence based guidelines using sound research and science. Once these new policies are approved by the School Board, we’ll pass them along so you are fully aware.

INFLUENZA VACCINATION CLINICSWe will offer influenza vaccination clinics again this year at all three schools. These will take place at THHS on October 9th and Minnehaha and William Kelley on October 10th. Once again, Hennepin Health Care’s Minnesota Visiting Nurse Agency (MVNA) will provide the vaccinations.

MVNA can only vaccinate students and staff who have a completed (2 sided) consent form. These will be due on THURSDAY, OCTOBER 3RD. • Most insurance will be honored. • Those without insurance or for whom the cost of vaccination is a burden will be vaccinated free of charge. • Students in kindergarten through grade 12 as well as staff will be eligible for vaccination. If you do not want your child protected against influenza, you do not need to return a form. Only those with completed forms will be vaccinated.

ATTENDANCEWe hard every year to assure all students who are able attend school every day. Our administrative teams meet regularly, review attendance patterns and will send letters when students are chronically absent. We want to work closely with parents to assure that their children are well educated and successful throughout life. Regular school attendance correlates with graduation and future success.Adapted from Attendance Works:1. Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year. Half the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school. 2. Absenteeism and its ill effects start early. One in 10 kindergarten and first grade students are chronically absent. 3. Poor attendance can influence whether children read proficiently by the end of third grade or be held back.4. By 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.5. Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month and that’s known as chronic absence.6. With a four day school week, one day of school is 25% of classroom time!7. When students improve their attendance rates, they improve their academic prospects and chances for graduating. If your child is absent 3 days in a row, we may ask for a health care provider’s note stating the reason for the absence and that the student is healthy enough to return to school.

Students and staff in the Lake Superior School District must have money in their food service account to make purchases in the kitchen. No cash will be accepted at the register. If there was money remaining in an account at the end of the 2018-2019 school year, it will transfer to 2019-2020, PIN numbers will remain the same. Food service accounts can be paid in the school office or online at www.isd381.org. If you would like, we can place limitations on your child’s purchas-es regarding ala carte or snack items.

NATIONAL WALK AND BIKE TO SCHOOL DAY, OCTOBER 2October 2nd is National Walk and Bike to School. The Minnehaha Elementary School has changed the title of this national event to Walk or Wheel to School, thus encouraging the student body to find any active means to get to school. Because many students are transported to school by car or bus, the Minnehaha also holds a WALK AT SCHOOL event on October 2nd (every Wednesday is walk at school Wednesday from 10:30-11:00) to promote daily physical activity and to ensure that ALL students have the opportunity to be active. Physical activity promotes both body and brain health and therefor benefits classroom performance.

RECYCLING UPDATEThe Two Harbors High School Enviro Club will be recycling ink cartridges and cell phone again. This program allows us to raise money while helping to protect the environment. Please bring your used ink cartridges or cell phones to the principal’s office or room 1214. Call advisor Penny Juenemann at 834-8201 ext. 8287 if you have questions.

ALUMNI HIGHLIGHT SHANE LOEFFLERShane Loeffler, of William Kelley High School’s class of 2010, is currently working on climate change-related data visualization at the University of Minnesota’s Polar Geospatial Center. He creates digital interfaces that allow researchers to navigate the satellite imagery and data of remote Polar Regions to better understand the current and future changes to our world. In addition to building tools for the research science community, he also works to make science more accessible to the broader public. He invented a mobile app, called Flyover Country, which allows travelers to identify and learn about landscape features they see as they peer out from an airplane window or look out from a hiking trail vista. It’s the app you want to have if you’ve ever looked out your window and asked, “What is that, how did that get here, or how old is that rock?”His dedication to supporting environmental research and education is rooted in his younger years spent wandering the North Shore’s rocky wilderness, taking great science and math classes at WKHS, and working at Maxwell’s Woodland Nursery. Working at the Nursery, in particular, he learned the value of observing and working with nature, especially on a local level, to make our world a healthier and nicer place.

In Minneapolis, Shane works with climate activists to raise the alarm about the consequences of continued inaction in the face of catastrophic climate change for the world and also here in Minnesota, where the effects range from increased tick-borne illnesses and the potential loss of state treasures like the Loon, to more existential problems like major crop failures. This winter Shane will be working at McMurdo Station in Antarctica where he will help other scientists create maps and visualize data they need to complete scientific expeditions on the continent. He’ll be trading Minnesota’s dark winter for the still cold, but constantly sunny, summer of the far south.

10 WAYS TO HELP YOUR CHILD

SUCCEED IN SCHOOLSupport from parents is key to helping kids do well academically. Here are 10 ways parents can put their kids on track to be successful students.

1. Attend Back-to-School Night and Parent-Teacher Conferences2. Visit the School and Its Website3. Support Homework Expectations: Homework in grade school reinforces and extends classroom learning and helps kids practice important study skills. It also helps them develop a sense of responsibility and a work ethic that will benefit them beyond the classroom. In addition to making sure your child knows that you see homework as a priority, you can help by creating an effective study environment. Any well-lit, comfortable, and quiet workspace with the necessary supplies will do. Avoiding distractions (like a TV in the background) and setting up a start and end time can also help.A good rule of thumb for an effective homework and/or study period is roughly 10 minutes per elementary grade level. Fourth-graders, for example, should expect to have about 40 minutes of homework or studying each school night. If you find that it’s often taking significantly longer than this guideline, talk with your child’s teacher. While your child does homework, be available to interpret assignment instructions, offer guidance, answer questions, and review the completed work. But resist the urge to provide the correct answers or complete the assignments yourself. Learning from mistakes is part of the process and you don’t want to take this away from your child.4. Send Your Child to School Ready to Learn5. Teach Organizational Skills When kids are organized, they can stay focused instead of spending time hunting things down and getting sidetracked. What does it mean to be organized at the elementary level? For schoolwork, it means having an assignment book and homework folder (many schools supply these) to keep track of homework and projects. Check your child’s assignment book and homework folder every school night so you’re familiar with assignments and your child doesn’t fall behind. Set up a bin for papers that you need to check or sign. Also, keep a special box or bin for completed and graded projects and toss papers.

6. Teach Study Skills Teach your child how to break down overall tasks into smaller, manageable chunks so preparing for a test isn’t overwhelming. You also can introduce your child to tricks like mnemonic devices to help with recalling information. Remember that taking a break after a 45-minute study period is an important way to help kids process and remember information.7. Know the Disciplinary Policies It’s important for your child to know what’s expected at school and that you’ll support the school’s consequences when expectations aren’t met. It’s easiest for students when school expectations match the ones at home, so kids see both environments as safe and caring places that work together as a team.8. Get Involved9. Take Attendance Seriously Sick kids should stay home from school if they have a fever, are nauseated, vomiting, or have diarrhea. Kids who lose their appetite, are clingy or lethargic, complain of pain, or who just don’t seem to be acting “themselves” should also take a sick day. Otherwise, it’s important that kids arrive at school on time every day, because having to catch up with classwork and homework can be stressful and interfere with learning. Sometimes students want to stay home from school because of problems with classmates, assignments or grades, or even teachers. This can result in real symptoms, like headaches or stomach aches. If you think there’s a problem at school, talk with your child — and then perhaps with the teacher — to find out more about what’s causing the anxiety. The school counselor might be able to help. Also try to avoid late bedtimes, which can result in tardy and tired students. A consistent sleep schedule can help.10. Make Time to Talk About School

RESTORATIVE YOGA Restorative yoga is a practice that is all about slowing down and opening up your body through passive stretching. Unlike a typical yoga class, where your muscles are used to hold different poses and postures, in restorative yoga the postures are held for a longer duration (3-5 minutes) using props such as blocks, bolsters and blankets. The use of props and the extended hold of the poses allows your body to deeply relax which will increase flexibility & balance.  Restorative yoga also stills the mind, improves the bodies capacity to heal, boosts the immune system and improves your over all mood. This yoga class will be very relaxing and slow moving. What to bring: comfortable clothes, yoga mat, one or two blankets, yoga bolster or a firm pillow, yoga blocks, water bottle.  Yoga blocks will be provided if needed.  No class  12/23, 12/30, 1/20.  Register by 10/9.   Instructor, Jillian McCorison
