BACKGROUND
RESEARCH
What is sound?
HANS JENNY
“The more one studies these things, the more one realizes that
sound is the creative principle. It must be regarded as primordial.
No single phenomenal category can be claimed as the aboriginal
principle. We cannot say, in the beginning was number, or in the
beginning was symmetry, etc. These are categorical properties
which are implicit in what brings forth and what is brought forth.
By using them in description we approach the heart of the matter.
They are not themselves the creative power. This power is inherent
in tone, in sound.”
- Hans Jenny,
Science Vibrates To Make Pictures. New York Times, April 28, 1968
WESTERN TRADITION
“And God said, Let there be light and there was light.”
- Genesis 1:3
“By the Word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them
by the breath of his mouth.”
- Psalms 33: 6
EASTERN TRADITION
The Aum Symbol
The syllable consists of three parts,a Vaishvanara, u Hiranyagarbha
and m Iswara, which symbolize the beginning, duration, and
dissolution of the universe and the associated gods Brahma,
Vishnu, and Shiva, respectively.
Aum in the Mandukya Upanishad
There are three matras (“letters”, syllabic instants in prosody)
in the word aum : ‘a’, ‘u’ and ‘m’. The ‘a’ stands for the state of
wakefulness, where we experience externally through our mind and
sense organs. The ‘u’ stands for the dream state, in which inward
experiences are available. In the state of deep sleep, represented
by the sound ‘m’, there is no desire and consciousness is gathered
in upon itself.
SUPER STRING THEORY
The basic idea is that the fundamental constituents of reality are
strings of the Planck length (about 10−33 cm) which vibrate at
resonant frequencies. Every string, in theory, has a unique
resonance, or harmonic. Different harmonics determine different
fundamental forces. The tension in a string is on the order of the
Planck force (1044 newtons).
