Progression AgreementsThe Wakefield College 14-16 Progression Agreements aim to maximise the opportunities for Step Up learners to progress from their 14-16 studies into post-16 study with us.They demonstrate our commitment to strengthening links with partner schools and rewarding the success, hard work and dedication of young people accessing 14-16 provision at the College. The Progression Agreements will reward students who pass their course and demonstrate excellent attendance and behaviour over the duration of their 14-16 study. The Agreements are now active and will be valid for learners in the current Year 11 cohort applying to Wakefield College during the year.

If you have any questions please contact Sandra Lockett on [email protected] or call: 01924 789742.

Learner ReportingFollowing consultation and a working party involving partner schools, we have developed a new reporting mechanism to give schools more detailed information on their learners’ progress at Wakefield College. The new Half Term Review charts progress against specific modules within each course in addition to the general update on Attendance, Attitude, Effort and Behaviour. The report allows our tutors to set personal goals and targets for students which are specific and measurable. We feel this will not only benefit schools but also help our learners’ development on the course and help them to take ownership of their personal progress.

Learner and Parental VoiceAt Wakefield College we value the opinions of our learners and in order to acknowledge that, we have included a Learner Voice section in the new Half Term Review reports. This section encourages our students to make comments on their report and set themselves targets and goals for the forthcoming half term. It also enables us to monitor the popularity and success of our courses and ensure that our curriculum offer and delivery is current and attractive to our learners. We will also be introducing a parent/carer survey in 2013-14 to gauge parental perception of our 14-16 provision, support and the progression pathway opportunities available to their children.

Activities2013/14

How to use the 14-16 ProspectusYou will find within this Prospectus a list of courses and activities offered by Wakefield College. This list is not exhaustive or prescriptive as we aim to work with schools in assisting them to deliver their own individual curriculum plans. We will endeavour to meet all requests for accredited courses, provided we receive them by March 2014. This includes our Step Up provision and other School Link part-time programmes. Requests received after this date will be subject to negotiation and remaining capacity within the College. We anticipate that this Prospectus will be used in the main by school staff, in selecting provision that meets with the school curriculum and plans for WRL cohorts, Gifted and Talented, and Early College Transfer students. In selecting a course, please look at the information provided on duration, whether it is a part or full-time course, and at which campus it takes place.

How to ApplyPlease contact the 14-16 team with all your enquiries.

Step Up CoursesFor Step Up courses requests for places must be made to the 14-16 Programme Coordinators by March 2014. Students must meet the entry criteria for each course and may be required to undergo an interview and testing prior to selection for a September start. When making decisions on your requirements this year, please give serious consideration to the needs of your cohort, the level of their ability, funding for the programme, and your transport arrangements. For all School Link courses it is also highly advantageous to the learners for staff from the two institutions to work together on agreed schemes of work, and delivery through joint attendance in class. A shared responsibility for the learners is expected and welcomed.

Early College Transfer

Wakefield College is committed to supporting both learners and partner schools through its ECT Programme. This provision suits young people looking to follow a vocational pathway in a mature and new environment. Learners will choose to specialise in a vocational subject and also study Functional Skills in Mathematics and English alongside other elements such as PSD.

The interest in this provision is beginning to grow and to ensure that a learner has the best possible chance of securing a place on a programme applications should be sent to the 14 -16 Programme Coordinator by Friday 23rd May 2014.

Applicants are then assessed for suitability for their chosen course by College tutors, and will be required to undergo an interview and testing prior to selection onto the ECT programme. Selection is dependent on a commitment from the applicant to attend their interview and enrolment appointments.

Year 10 Early College Transfer Preparation ProgrammeThis provision has been developed with partner schools and learners to offer an alternative weekly curriculum for learners in Year 10. The provision aims to engage and challenge young people and familiarise them with College life. The programme includes a range of non-accredited PSD activities alongside a vocational carousel which offers students the opportunity to experience lessons in areas such as Construction, Motor Vehicle, Childcare, Sports, Public Services and Hospitality and Catering.

This provision has been piloted as a preparation programme for Year 10 learners who have been identified as potential Early College Transfer students. It aims to ease their transition to full-time education at Wakefield College and ensure they choose the most appropriate vocational area in which to study in Year 11.

For more information, please contact Sandra Lockett on 01924 789742.

High ExpectationsOur policies on attendance and standards of work are there to ensure that students demonstrate a full commitment to their study and are ultimately successful. We will expect students to meet or exceed their target grades, and we will enjoy being able to celebrate their success in achieving these high standards.

Our School Liaison OfferAt Wakefield College, we are committed to working collaboratively with our partner schools. We offer a vast number of Taster Sessions and other school liaison activities which are available to school age learners in all our subject areas.

The sessions are delivered at all three of our campuses and aim to give young people an exciting and challenging first experience of our College and motivate them to apply for a programme of study when they leave school.

In addition to the activities listed, we offer Discovery Days and Campus Tours throughout the year and are happy to deliver presentations and ‘Taster’ activities in schools. A full list of activities available can be found in the Wakefield College School Liaison Brochure.

To book places or discuss further how we can meet your school’s needs, please contact Jane Fitzpatrick.

Careers Advice and GuidanceOur Student Advisors offer impartial guidance to help with choice of course or career. Appointments can be offered to prospective students to help to decide on the best course for them, and the service is available to all students throughout their course. Support can be arranged for those who may otherwise have difficulty accessing the service. We also provide careers information at each Campus to support students in their decision-making.

Additional SupportWe strongly urge students to disclose any disability or other additional support need so that we can make any reasonable adjustments to support them with their studies whilst at College.

Our team of staff try hard to identify the additional support any student may require to help them study and learn effectively. This could be extra support with English or Maths; communication support for Deaf students; provision of enabling and assistive computer equipment; provision of scribes and/or readers; care/welfare support; additional teaching and non-teaching curriculum support. The College has a disability statement, which outlines the access and support we are able to offer to learners. Copies are available from College receptions, the Learning Centres and the Additional Support Office and can be produced in alternative formats – large print, Braille etc – by request. The College also recognises its responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010. If a student on a part-time Student Link course normally receives SEN support at school, this support should normally follow them to College. If you haven’t been in touch with the Additional Support team, please contact them before you enrol your students to ensure that support is in place at the start of the course.
