What is the Cost-of-Living Index?
Source: ACCRA Cost of Living Index 2013
Purpose: To measure the relative price
levels for consumer goods and services in
metropolitan areas.
Process:
1. Each quarter Wake County Economic
Development collects price data for
goods selected by ACCRA. Other metro
areas also price the same exact goods
(at a specified time) and report it. The
index is released by quarter and
annually.
2. ACCRA weights each item and finds the
Annual Average Index from all 322
areas that participate.
3. The average cost for all places equals
100. Indexes higher than 100 have
above average costs.
