EXHIBIT PURPOSE
Educate visitors about the importance of beesRole in pollination & relevance to
agricultureProducts of the hive, tools of the tradeRole in human culture, history and well-being
Awareness of beneficial insects in general through a focus on honeybees’ importance
Publicity surrounding CCD increased public interest

• Local beekeepers & county associations
Irvin Rackley, NCSBA past president Dr. John Ambrose, NC State
response to public interest
DEVELOPMENT TIMELINE• 1994: NCSBA members Dr. Ambrose, Bill Sheppard and NCSBA president Rackley first consider creating a permanent honeybee exhibit with the NC Zoo
• 2008: Design phase; construction starts November• 2009: Exhibit opens in June
• 1997: Momentum builds; zoo administration in support of exhibit, but funding sought• 1998 – 2007: Nearly $250,000 raised for the exhibit from corporate sponsors, institutions, beekeepers and even the general public
