University 33 – Melville 19

University maintained their perfect start to the season with

their fifth straight bonus point win – a four tries to three victory

over Melville at Collins Road.

The points for the visitors came from two tries to fullback Te

Raina Richards-Coxhead and one from centre Chauncy

Edwardson, plus a try, two conversions and three penalties from

first five Damian McKenzie who again showed his class.

Melville, after conceding an 18-0 halftime lead, fought back

strongly in the second spell with tries to wing Wharley

Dianarova, flanker Conway Brady and fullback Mike Martin but it

was not enough to threaten the in-form University side.

Otorohanga 55 – Hautapu 15

Hautapu leaked over 50 points for the second straight week as

Otorohanga proved far too strong at Island Reserve with a nine

tries to two win.

Flanker Turuva Lumelume and hooker Craig Bell both scored

two tries as Otorohanga continued their unbeaten start to the

season.

Hautapu, who briefly held the lead after an early try, found

themselves trailing 26-5 at the break and Otorohanga powered

on to the half century mark in the second 40 minutes.

Hamilton Marist 42 – Morrinsville Sports 0

Hamilton Marist proved too good for Morrinsville Sports at

Marist Park, running in six tries and holding their visitors

scoreless.

Wing Isaac Te Tamaki, prop Lionel Wairau, flanker Marty

Holah, and halfbacks Michael Walsh and Harrison Levien all

scored for Marist, with fullback Wharenui Hawera also dotting

down and converting all six tries.

Morrinsville were still in the match at halftime, down by 14-0,

but Marist pulled away as the game wore on to take a

comfortable bonus point win.

Fraser Tech 95 – Te Rapa 0

Te Rapa made it back to back 15 try losses with this time

Fraser Tech the benefactor as they piled on the points at St

Andrews Park to push themselves into fifth spot.

The points for Tech were shared throughout the forwards and

backs with a total of 12 player scoring tries. Prop Latu Talakai

came away with a hat-trick and Shaquille Dempsey scored two.

Te Rapa did well to keep the scoreline to 26-0 at halftime but

fell away completely in the second half where they conceded a

further 11 tries.

Hamilton Old Boys 31 – Te Awamutu Sports 13

After jumping out to an early 14-0 lead, and a 21-8 halftime

lead, Hamilton Old Boys easily held on for a bonus point win

against Te Awamutu Sports at Albert Park.

Old Boys ran in four tries to wings Sione Tupa (2) and Josh

Tafili and hooker Tyrone Te Ruruku to keep themselves in third

place.

A slow start cost Te Awamutu for the second week in a row.

They managed one try in each half to lock JP Liebenberg and

wing Nanai Naturaga but had too much work to do after a

disappointing first quarter.

University, Otorohanga, Hamilton Old Boys and Hamilton Marist all recorded solid wins to further establish themselves as the top four. Fraser Tech was the other team with a Round 5 win which keeps them in touch with the leading group.

NICOL MACKIE CUP

University versus Hamilton Marist

When defending champions Hamilton Marist take on competition front runners University this Good Friday

the match will take on even more importance than just a top four clash.

The Round 6 match will see the Nicol Mackie Cup at stake for the first time. The cup has been created in

memory of two great stalwarts of the clubs, Stu Nicol and Chris Mackie, who sadly passed away last year.

The east of the river clubs have enjoyed fierce competition over the years and this trophy will further add

to the tradition of this matchup.
