Theo Speirings — Fonterra boss

Fonterra signals governance change

Hard on the heels of farmer shareholder pressure, in the wake of falling prices and suggestions, Fonterra governance was ‘top heavy’ and the company has announced it plans to cut two directors from its board.

The change will see the number of directors fall to 11. Other changes include allowing corporate farmers to be eligible for the board as farmer shareholders, forcing the board to consult the shareholders’ council on appointments and giving farmers more information about potential directors ahead of annual meetings.

At the AGM in November last year, prominent Fonterra shareholders sought a reduction in the board to just nine members. Greg Gent and Colin Armer had their idea rejected at the time.

However despite being opposed by both Fonterra’s board and the shareholders’ council, almost 55 per cent of shareholders voted for the plan, forcing Fonterra to signal it would review the way it governed.

In a message to shareholders, the Fonterra statement was: ‘Overall, we think that a reduction of two directors strikes the right balance between our continuing drive for diversity, the ability for the board to responsibly manage its workload, and efficiency.’

Fonterra’s proposal would also allow those who have investments in corporate farms to be eligible to join the board in positions reserved for farmer

shareholders. While the change reflects the increasingly complex way in which farms are owned in New Zealand, it could open the cooperative to claims that it is allowing investors with little day to day involvement in the industry to take control away from those who operate farms.

Forum to help farmersDeputy Prime Minister Hon Bill English and Fonterra CEO Theo Spierings are among a line-up of leading speakers presenting to dairy farmers at the DairyNZ Farmers’ Forum held on May 17–18, in Hamilton.

The biennial event will give dairy farmers insight into how to adapt their businesses in the current challenging times, and how the global environment will shape the future of New Zealand milk production.

“The Farmers’ Forum is about helping farmers understand what is driving the current financial climate and what they can do to help manage it,” says DairyNZ strategy and investment leader for sustainability, Rick Pridmore.

“Adapting to the changing environment is more important than ever — the industry is going through challenging times, so farmers are looking hard at where they can improve their businesses.”

The two-day DairyNZ Farmers’ Forum at Hamilton’s Mystery Creek Events Centre is expected to attract over 700 farmers.

On day one, Hon Bill English will speak on the government’s view on dairying’s future, while Theo Spierings will share his thoughts on what the dairy industry needs to excel at to succeed.

Other keynote speakers include Rabobank International head of food and agribusiness research and advisory, Tim Hunt, who will share what is happening in global markets and what this means for New Zealand dairy farmers. Day two keynote speakers include Zespri

International chief operating officer Simon Limmer and grower Ian Greaves, who will share the lessons learnt by the kiwifruit industry after the PSA outbreak.

“The Farmers’ Forum is a great opportunity for dairy farmers.

It’s rare to hear from a line-up of speakers of this calibre at a single event, plus in these challenging times it becomes even more important to get off-farm and interact with other farmers,” says Rick.

Farmers can also choose from 11 workshops over two days.

A workshop by Lincoln University’s professor of trade and environmental economics, Caroline Saunders, will address what overseas customers want from our milk and what they are willing to pay for it.

A panel discussion of dairy company leaders will look at value add, including Tatua CEO Paul McGilvary, Open Country Dairy chairman Laurie Margrain, Miraka CEO Richard Wyeth and Lewis Road Creamery founder Peter Cullinane.

Waikato University agribusiness professor Jacqueline Rowarth will host a workshop discussing genetic modification and whether it should be part of the industry’s future.

Other workshops include: living a pasture first strategy; exploring whether $3/kg MS farm working expenses is

doable; staff roster systems; growing better quality and more persistent pastures; breeding better cows, and dealing with environmental constraints. The DairyNZ Farmers’ Forum is free to

levy paying dairy farmers and their staff.Registrations are open and essential

prior to the event. To view the full programme or register,

Undeterred by the state of the house and surrounding property, Greg was keen for a change

in lifestyle and began to make the house habitable.

“The house was overgrown and the orchard was in disrepair. I thought to myself, ‘Yay here’s a project,’ ” he says.

Greg grew up in Auckland and owned a small upholstery business beforehand so he knew little about chestnuts before he took the plunge.

The orchard emcompasses eight acres with a mixture of raspberry bushes, 350 plum trees, and 144 25-year-old chestnut trees.

When a tender property came up with a chestnut

orchard, raspberries and seven varieties of plums, Greg

Phillips leapt at the chance to to take on a challenge

and aptly named the property Atendervision.

This year will be his second season and everything he knows about chestnuts he has learnt in the past two years.

“I discovered they are quite good for you and are gluten free so I have concentrated on that. I don’t know if it’s going to pay but here I am.”

The plums ripen from Christmas time to March and then the chestnut harvest season begins lasting about four weeks.

“Chestnuts are very perishable have to be picked up very quickly before being chilled and kept at a certain temperature. We have to wait until they drop and once they finish falling we start sizing, grading and packaging them and then taking them to the market.”

With no orcharding experience prior to taking on Atendervision, Greg says they floundered a bit in the first season but have learnt a lot since then.

“We did a lot of research. I grew up in a big family in Auckland and Mum was

an avid gardener so we always had fruit and veg coming through the household and I took an interest.

“I got to a stage in my life where I felt like I needed a challenge. I looked at cows and milking. I looked at the capital outlay and thought I’d like to try something totally differently.

“I think the chestnuts are going to be big. They are very popular in America and Europe and in Asian countries.”

Greg’s chestnuts are the French variety and he says they are very good quality of varying sizes and he hopes to cater to a niche market.

“I was quite shocked to find out how good they are for you. They can be roasted or boiled, used in stews to thicken them up, and you can even make flour with them as a gluten free alternative.”

Once the four weeks of harvesting is over the chestnuts are washed, chilled and sized with a home-made grader.

“We sort them into all the different sizes — small, medium and large — then weigh them into 10 kilogram sacks, box them and then take them to market.”

Despite the work being tiring and non-stop Greg and his partner Chantelle are enjoying the change.

“I love it. I’m getting older and I wanted to get out into the country for the lifestyle.

“It is hard work and you don’t have any holidays but the big thing that I enjoy about it is the challenge.”

opportunities. In the stables of Sultan Quaboose Bin Saeed, there were horses of every breed and discipline. We were involved in a military demonstration in a massive stadium where our trotters stole the show.

“When I went overseas, I had to quickly learn the native languages of the countries, such as Chinese, Cantonese and Arabic. I also spent some time in America and Australia before returning home in 1985. It was very interesting to see the diversity in which people trained their horses in different countries.”

He then started training horses at the Cambridge Raceway.

“The industry itself is very unpredictable. You never know when you have got a winner, or when you have to count your losses. It costs a lot of money to keep these equine racing machines, but it is all worth it when you get a win. “It is always an emotional moment for the owners when this happens regardless of how big or small the race is.

“I have always preferred the trotters because they are not restricted by the weight of the driver. They are also not affected by the changing conditions of the track like gallopers are, as the terrain is always constant. There is also an element of independence working with them.”

Sean has trained some very successful horses. He recalls fondly the mare Chiolas Lass that earned the title of best two and three-year-old in New Zealand and three-year-old in Australia. She went on to be a great producer in the broodmare paddock.

“The most memorable horse I have worked with was Sovereignty, owned by Charlie Hunter. As a three-year-old he won the first Waikato Harness Jewels — it was a brilliant feeling. Of his 94 starts, he won 28 and placed on 34 occasions.

“To work with the animals you have to develop a trusting relationship with them. It is a fine balance of knowing the roles between horse and trainer — such as who does the thinking and who does the running. When you have that bond, the horse will trust the driver to make the right decisions.

“The most important part of training is the fitness. We have to prepare them to race, so everything is done to get them up to a standard where they can win without suffering permanent damage physically and mentally,” says Sean.Mr McCaffrey is currently working with 15

horses. He is set upon getting the best of these to qualify for the Cambridge Harness Jewels on June 4. Occasionally he takes his horses down to the the South Island and Australia to race also. “I own shares in some of the animals and with a bit of luck I will get some success out of them too. I do have some land in Cambridge but I find it a lot more convenient to keep my horses at the raceway where I lease a stable so I have access to the track.

“I find to be a harness trainer you rely heavily on your wits. It is a life on the edge, because you never know what the next day will bring. I have learnt in my travels that there is no right way to train a horse. Everybody in the industry shares the same goal yet getting there is a journey that is different for everyone involved.”

It was life changing for the couple for a number of reasons including tasting great food and discovering

the value of seaweed.“It was a hot, wet, fungal summer and

most farms were having problems with issues such as botrytis in strawberries and facial eczema on cattle but one farm was not having trouble,” said Jill.

“This property belonged to a German couple and their farm was exceptional with no health problems with soil, plants, pasture or animals. Their major farm input was seaweed.”

After that trip Jill and Keith committed personally to investigating the value seaweed has and growing organic food for their family.

“In those days not one organic input was to be found in any garden store. We were living in Auckland with a beautiful garden and large grounds, but were reliant on high chemical inputs.

“We researched seaweed internationally to discover who uses

it, what it is good for and how it was used. Seaweed worldwide are loosely categorised by colour — red, green and brown. The brown category was

the one widely used in agriculture and horticulture.”

“Today we know more than 800 species. We trialled different New Zealand brown species until we identified the premium one — Ecklonia radiata. Keith brewed and I grew — only then did we begin to learn the real value of seaweed.

“We were founding members of the Seaweed Association of New Zealand, an organisation set up in 1994 with two major aims — to protect the marine coastal eco-system, and to build a long-term sustainable seaweed industry for the country.

“Seaweed is the most complex material containing minerals, vitamins, growth promotants, trace elements, amino acids — it is a nutrient ‘feast’, a smorgasbord for soil biology, plant and animal health.

“Our own property was changing and thriving. We had eight Golden Queen peach trees that had leaf curl and brown rot so severe not one peach was edible. We treated the drip lines with seaweed. By season two the disease had halved and we treated them with soil and foliar. In season three we had eight healthy trees with wonderful crops. The ‘secret’ to seaweed was and still is simply — high nutrition.

“We read that famous rosarian, Allen G Scott, was trying to save old roses around a church in Morrinsville. We sent our seaweed to him and they thrived. Rose growers and gardeners started visiting and asking for liquid seaweed concentrates.“Finally a Hawke’s Bay orchardist rang

for two 200 litre drums for his apple orchard after his wife had used it on her garden. This compelled us to produce and sell to others.

“We registered a company called Ocean Organics Ltd in 1996 and our certified organic seaweed products were appreciated by gardeners.”

Moving to the Hauraki Plains they purchased the old butter factory in Paeroa where products including comfrey sprays to induce flowering, garlic spray and creams, and soaps with seaweed for humans were developed.

“Kiwifruit people began to make enquiries and we took this very seriously and commissioned three years of research across five kiwifruit orchards to assess the effects of AgriSea seaweed. The results included an 11 per cent increase in yield year one. Significantly longer storage capacity and 150 per cent increase in worms and larger fruit size,” said Jill.

“Avocado, vineyard and dairy farmers came to us and we felt a huge responsibility to growers who depended on their land.

“In 2003 our son, Tane, did market research on dairy farmers’ perception of the word ‘organic’. It was extremely negative so on advice from business experts we created AgriSea New Zealand Ltd. This removed the word ’organics’ from any company indicators.” Liquid seaweed concentrates for soil, foliar/pasture, seaweed salt blocks, and seaweed pellets were then developed.

Jill and Keith have now handed over the reins to Tane and daughter-in-law, Clare.

“One of their aims is to increase exports once a safe management framework for seaweed is in place. Tane and Clare are as committed to research as we were.”

In April, Dr. Christine Jones, an internationally renowned soil ecologist who works with innovative farmers world-wide, will move to Paeroa to take up the position of AgriSea Head of Research to develop a ‘Soils First Production System’.

“As rules tighten for farmers around regulatory requirements for reduced chemical inputs to mitigate environmental factors, including severely compromised waterways, farmers need well researched alternative management strategies. The single biggest on-farm factor to ensure healthy waterways is to have

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERSSave money by keeping your septic system effective and healthySave money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

Cambridge Forest and Native Nursery is a family owned business that began 26 years ago during a boom in the forestry industry and has been run solely by Anton Sudano for the past two years.

“My father was originally a dairy farmer so when he saw an opportunity to get into the forestry industry he took it. He had always been a farmer so he knew his way around machinery and cropping,” Anton says.

Back then they were growing approximately 300,000 trees per year. Now they grow around three million Radiata Pine a year.

“Log prices are up at the moment, so that is a positive thing for the industry. It is a really good time to get into it.

“The beauty of forestry is that although 28 years is a long time to wait for the trees to mature you can harvest ve years on either side of that. So you can wait for the right time.”

During the Autumn months they busy themselves with conditioning the seedling trees that have been planted in the nursery.

“They have grown to the height that we send them out at by this stage. It is a

matter of undercutting, which is the rst process of cutting the tap roots then we laterally prune them. We then take the tops off so they are uniform.”

The forestry season takes off in May, which is when they start sending the trees out, as the nal planting is best done in the winter months.

When people are just starting out growing for the industry Anton recommends Radiata Pine as he believes it is a very versatile forest species.

“It is great for the steep country that farmers might have trouble farming and grows everywhere in many different conditions.”

Cambridge Forest and Native Nursery also grow about 300,000 alternative species such as Cypress, Redwoods and a range of natives for riparian planting and Anton and his staff are able to visit the farm to advise about what will suit the land for forestry and riparian planting.

Crème de la crèmeby Ayla Miller

New Zealand’s paramount horse racing event, the 10th Harness Jewels, is being held in Cambridge this June 4 and with stake money of $1.2 million, it promises to offer spectators an adrenaline filled day.

The event began in 2007 and has been running alternatively between Ashburton and Cambridge ever since with this year’s event seeing 108 Of New Zealand’s best pacers and trotters competing against their peers.

Event manager Mike Weston has been organising the Cambridge event since 2008.

“It is the pinnacle of age group racing for horses in New Zealand and all the races are the same distance of 1,609 metres,” he says. There are nine races on the day and they all pertain to the various age groups and people come from all over New Zealand to take part in the Harness Jewels.

“Horses have to qualify to take part and every time they race during the year the amount of money they earn

equates to certain points and the ones with the most points are invited to race in this event.

“It’s unique because it brings all the best horses together. It is the creme de la creme. There is quite a bit of prestige associated and the horses have raced all the year for this moment.”He says the Harness Jewels are great for spectators and the Cambridge Raceway pre-sell dining and hospitality packages.

“We have got very good facilities for watching the races in our members’ lounge — probably one of the best in New Zealand.

“People get dressed up and we have visitors from the South Island come up to the Waikato.

“We also have several events away from the races such as a

cocktail party the night before which usually has about 300 people.”The races are $10 for the general public and is the only entry fee charged at the raceway in the year.

“It’s just the hype, the activity, the atmosphere. They go all guns blazing. It really gets the adrenaline pumping. “Being involved is an achievement for

a horse’s owner as well and it brings a lot of money into Cambridge and the Waikato.”

It is estimated that $3.4 million is generated in the district as a result of the event.

The controlling body of the industry, Harness Racing New Zealand, introduced an initiative which sees one

Australian horse invited to compete in each category. So now spectators not only see New Zealand’s best horses, but some of Australia’s as well.

This, combined with what is said to be one of the most fast paced kinds of racing across Australasia, makes for an unmissable event.

“It’s a really unique day that brings all the good horses together on the one day. They are on the same playing field, on the same track and racing over the same distance.

“You don’t have to be a gambler. If you want to bet $1 or $100 you will have a unique experience at the Jewels.”

Why is it that well over half of the harness racing classic winners come from PGG Wrightson sales?

Why is it that the yearling sales has produced an incredible 38 winners in the brief history of the Jewels?

Why are horses purchased through the sales ring so successful when the harness yearling sales at Karaka and Christchurch only offer around 20 per cent of the foals bred each year?

The auctioneers at PGG Wrightson believe it’s got a lot to do with ‘setting goals’.

Owners and trainers who buy at our sales set their purchases on a career path towards a set pattern of racing that leads them towards the two, three and four-year-old classic races.

That journey heads then towards the Young Guns Series, the $1,000,000 Sires Stakes Series, the $1,000,000 Yearling Sales Race Series and, the Nevele R Fillies Series. It includes Derbies and Oaks staged in both the North and South Islands and all culminates each Queen’s Birthday in the $1.3 million Harness Jewels which alternate between Ashburton or Cambridge. Many then cross the Tasman to

contest the Australian $1.5 million Australasian Breeders Crown Series in Melbourne. The Kiwis have an incredible record at the Breeders Crown.

Peter Lagan, PGG Wrightson’s standardbred specialist says it’s actually a case of too many opportunities. “It’s all about setting yourself to be there and contesting.”

At one point sales horses had won a remarkable 18 of the last 20, New Zealand or Northern Derbys. Sales graduates lled the trifecta in this year’s NZ Derby won by Lazarus.

A stellar cast of sales horses contest this year’s Jewels at Cambridge, the likes of Chase The Dream, Classie Brigade, Shandale, Pacing Major, More Than Better, Speeding Spur, Spanish Armada, Delightful Memphis, Wilmas Mat and Coana Bridge. So the record results are sure to keep climbing.

Australasia star pacer of the moment Have Faith In Me is currently spelling and will miss the Jewels. He too is a product of PGG Wrightson sales.

Trucking in the familyA D V E RT O R I A L

Cossey Cartage was initially set up as a single six-wheeler truck back in the early 2000 for owner Bryan’s son, Tony, who at the time was living in South Auckland and working as a dispatcher for a trucking company delivering various liquid components around New Zealand.

Tony had been trucking since an early age and wanted to get out of the ‘rat race’ so he moved down to Cambridge and their rst truck was purchased — an Isuzu CXZ 6 wheeler tipper, which is still in operation today.

Tony operated this for a few years and as work got busier and busier a

three-axle tip trailer then arrived, then later a 12-tonne excavator, then another six-wheeler plus a four-axle trailer.

It was at this stage that Bryan became more involved in the operation.

“I guess you could say it’s in the blood as my Dad was a truckie who worked for W A Stevenson and Sons

in Drury for over forty years,” he said.“Us boys in the family were not

allowed to be truck drivers when leaving school but had to go out and learn a trade of some sort rst, thus I ended up serving my apprenticeship at the NZ Railways Otahuhu Workshops as a tter and welder.

“After getting married I shifted to Paeroa and worked for the NZ Co-Op Dairy Company as a tter and turner and raised two children. In 1981 the area workshop closed down and I decided

to have a go at working for myself and started doing mobile engineering work which led me to working all over the Thames Valley as well as the Waikato.

“Once the children wanted to leave school we shifted over to Cambridge. We at present have two truck and trailers along with three diggers and I have now reached the stage in life to ease back a bit and try and see more of New Zealand while I can, and am handing the business over to my son Tony.”

There’s three horses in this syndicate, in addition to racing the star Harriet Of Mot you’ll also share in the success of Eilish Aimee & Saratoga, the ex-Kiwi trotter who’s now based in Queensland and taken his career tally to 12 victories – five of those wins coming since January this year. An opportunity for sharesA D V E RT O R I A L

Shares in a runner at this year’s Harness Jewels, anyone? It’s not often that people get the chance to buy into a potential superstar in the horse racing game, but that’s exactly what goHarness Syndication are offering for a limited time.

Harriet Of Mot is going to be starting at the Harness Jewels in Cambridge on June 4. She has been a real ‘ nd’ amongst the trotting ranks in 2015/16. She only began racing a year ago but has already rocketed into the top grade.

To mark the occasion of having its rst ever contestant on the biggest race day outside of Cup Week, goHarness is offering shares in Harriet Of Mot’s syndicate for sale — see advertisement on this page for details.

goHarness is a Christchurch-based syndication company that has been in operation since 2012. During that time they have had a 100 percent record — every syndicate launched, and every horse they have selected to race in their syndicates has been a winner.

Founded by well-known harness racing identity Noel Kennard, goHarness kicked off with the ‘In It For Fun’ syndicate and enjoyed three wins with the pacer Franco Harrison.

The ‘Trotting For Fun’ syndicate came hard on its heels and is still in operation to this day with members being able to enjoy the thrill of racing three trotters at the same time: Harriet Of Mot has had

eight wins to date, Saratoga has had 11 wins to date, and Eilish Aimee has had one win to date.

Next was the ‘Buy, Race and Sell’ syndicate. It only ran for about a year and did exactly what its name suggests — bought horses, raced them, and then on-sold them again. During that time members got to cheer home Bettor Than Best with six Australian wins, Barry with two wins, All Cash had one win and James Castleton also had one win. All four of these horses were then sold for

more than what the syndicate paid for them. ‘Double The Fun’ was the fourth syndicate to roll off the production line, and it will nish at the end of the current racing season. It has already savoured ve wins apiece from its pacers Astro Boy and Western Art.

goHarness is about to launch two new syndicates as well, so there’s plenty of opportunities for those interested in becoming a part of New Zealand’s largest and most successful syndication company.

We’re really excited by the quality of the foals he’s left and can’t wait to see the rst of them hit the track in late 2017. The weanling sale offers the perfect opportunity for his many fans to pick up a mini-tommy of their own.”

Over the years the Woodlands Stud Draft has produced many ‘fairytale’ stories. One which stands out is that of multiple Group1 winner My Hard Copy. In 2010 the then unnamed son of American Ideal was sold for just $4,400, he has since gone on to amass over $1 million dollars in earnings, and counting.

It just goes to show champions can come from anywhere. The Woodlands Stud draft offers something for everyone so view the draft today at

A strong comebackLIC’s Jersey Premier Sires bulls have cemented their position at the top of the national Jersey Ranking of Active Sires list.

This is good news for dairy farmers who prefer to get their Jersey inseminations from their farmer-owned co-operative. Among a range of positive statistics on the Jersey RAS list, LIC has all of the top five bulls. It also has eight of the top 10, and 11 of the top 15 bulls on the Jersey RAS list. Of the 11, nine are new graduates which illustrates the change in LIC’s momentum.

“In these economically challenging times for dairy farmers, LIC’s Jersey Premier Sires bulls offer exceptional quality and value for money,” said LIC Jersey Bull Acquisition Manager, Malcolm Ellis.

“As a dairy farmer myself who is passionate about farm profitability, and particularly at times like these, I want farmers to have the confidence that Jersey Premier Sires will give them the best value, at around $19 in the cow for a 400-cow herd for the average farmer.

“The Premier Sires liquid semen is the most cost-effective way to provide genetic gain to our farmer-shareholders. They can be confident the majority of the industry’s top Jersey bulls are now within the LIC Premier Sires team,” said Mr Ellis.

LIC has now had the top five Jersey bulls on the Jersey RAS list for the last three consecutive Animal Evaluation runs. The RAS list ranks the bulls from all the companies that provide inseminations to dairy farmers nationwide. The latest list was released on Saturday, April 2. The list is administered by the industry-good organisation DairyNZ. LIC will be holding Jersey field days for farmers to share

the latest information, give updates on its Jersey breeding programme and explain related aspects including LIC’s new Once a Day Selection Index.

There will be seven field days in total across five regions — Northland, Waikato, Taranaki, Manawatu and the West Coast of the South Island.

Mr Ellis said LIC has improved the performance of its Jersey bulls significantly over the past five years, with a focussed programme of work.

“We have brought a return to basics mentality to our breeding scheme and put a lot of emphasis on strong, deep cow families and our bulls are graduating from that. We have had a significant fundamental shift in quality and we will continue to develop that for the good of our farmer-shareholders.”

“It was positive that so many new graduates are appearing on the RAS list because it confirms that LIC was focussing on the right things in its breeding programme.

“We are pleased our hard work in this area is paying off. The benefits of the quality of LIC’s top Jersey bulls will flow on to farmers who invest in inseminations from LIC Premier Sires Jerseys and confirm the Jersey breed’s status as a genuine parent breed with a great deal to offer the industry.”

Dairy farmers are encouraged to attend LIC’s Jersey field days. The Waikato field days are to be held on April 28 starting 10.30am at Roger and Glenys Ellison’s, 1140 Manawaru Road, Te Aroha and 7.30pm at Burchell Pavilion, Te Awamutu i-SITE Centre, 1 Gorst Ave, Te Awamutu.

How much does it cost? How much are you willing to pay to minimise your lameness cost? I guess the answer would be ‘as much as it takes as long as the benefits exceed the cost’.

Lameness costs a lot of money even in a low payout year. It is difficult to give money away if you haven’t got any to give away. In a low payout year the cost won’t be as high as in a high payout year due to lower cow prices, and the loss of milk production is less costly because of lower milk prices. However, the cost is much more critical. You simply just cannot afford to have your cows under-performing in a financially difficult year. The trick is to get as much out of your cows with the least amount of cost. In order to do that the basic needs of the cow must be met. This way she will be producing well and have the least amount of problems, including lameness.

Many people don’t know or don’t appreciate the importance of this fact, yet it is quite observable when you look at cow behaviour.

Most farmers that move to a 16-hour milking schedule towards the end of the season report that their cows move faster back to the paddock,

milk production stays the same and they have less lameness. What has changed for the cows when they are only being milked every 16 hours instead of every 12 hours? Well, the short answer is that you are giving your cow more time in the paddock. This means that the cows are getting more time to behave in a natural manner. Look at a well-fed herd in the paddock. What are they doing? How are they behaving? They graze, lay down, drink and do some socialising. This is obviously normal, natural behaviour or at least as close to it as the cow can get in the environment in which we put them.

What do cows do in the yard? They just stand there waiting. It is quite a different behaviour from what they are showing us in the paddock.

If cows are spending a lot of time just standing in the paddock and doing nothing other than standing, then there is a problem. If we force our cows to take on a different behaviour pattern to what they would choose themselves then you can expect problems. That

sounds reasonable doesn’t it? You could argue that cows would get used to a different behaviour as they are creatures of habit. However, if it is true that the forced behaviour is not an issue for the cows then why are they improving so quickly when that forced behaviour is reduced? So, what is my point? I am not saying that we should cut out all forced behaviour.

A cow needs to be milked and the farm needs to run practically. What I am saying is that the forced behaviour should be kept to an absolute minimum. If you don’t think this is a big deal, just ask your cows.

See if they will change their behaviour when they get more paddock time. The aim should be to let the cows behave as naturally as possible for the most time possible.

That may mean milking every 16 hours, having smaller herds, being more efficient with milking or anything else you can think of, but it does not need to cost much to minimise your lameness cost.

Animal welfare regulationsThe Ministry for Primary Industries is seeking feedback on proposed regulations designed to take the next step in improving our already strong animal welfare system.

The Ministry for Primary Industries is seeking feedback on proposed regulations designed to take the next step in improving our already strong animal welfare system.

The regulations cover live animal exports, the care and conduct towards animals as well as surgical and painful procedures. The proposed regulations have come about following amendments to the Animal Welfare Act last year.

MPI’s Director of Biosecurity and Animal Welfare, Julie Collins, urges those with interest in animal welfare to take the time to look at the proposals and have their say.

“Animal welfare matters. It’s important to animals, it’s important to us as a society, and it’s important to our economy.

“Last year, following an extensive consultation process, the Animal Welfare Act was amended to improve the enforceability, clarity and transparency of the animal welfare system. The changes to the Act have meant we have the ability to make regulations, which will provide detailed rules sitting under the Act.”

Examples of the proposals include: requiring adequate shelter for bobby calves and dogs travelling on the back of vehicles on public roads must be secured so they don’t fall off.“The new rules mean we can effectively

deal with all levels of offending, not just the most severe. Severe offences are currently dealt with under the Act.”

Following consultation, some regulations may be brought forward to be in place by the 2016 calving season.

“Consultation is open until 19 May. To ensure we get the best rules possible, we need your feedback,” said Ms Collins.

MPI will be holding six public meetings which are open to anyone who wishes to understand the proposals and share their views. All feedback will be taken into consideration before recommendations are made to the Minister for Primary Industries. There is a meeting at the Hamilton Gardens on Tuesday 3 May 5.30pm–8pm.

Julie Collins, MPI’s director ofBiosecurity and Animal Welfare

New markets new opportunitiesby John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials

A D V E RT O R I A L

In my last article I wrote about xing free nitrogen from the atmosphere to help reduce your on farm cost factors. This nitrogen is completely natural, stores well in the soil for release on demand, has no cost factor, is environmentally friendly and promotes clover growth.

Today, I’m on track to set your farm up for certi ed natural input production so that you can take advantage of the higher prices being paid for certi ed food. This new consumer demand for safe, certi ed, nutritiously dense food, re ected strongly during the meltdown in prices for

commodity milk powder during autumn last year, with organic milk powder selling at as high as $14,800 USD per tonne. This new market for certi ed milk, meat and produce is here to stay, so your best move is to join the certi ed system and set your sights on gathering in top money for you and your future. This opportunity will only continue to grow.

Today’s conventional chemical production system has passed its use by date. There is a brand new market out there which is not accessible with chemical production. Chemical production has locked the farmers into commodity markets with low payout. We desperately need to get back on track with a production system that not only enhances your soil like Agrissentials best on earth fertilisers do but also your production, your quality, your farm, your environment and your bank account.

Agrissentials have developed a system that works alongside Mother Nature. Gaining all the bene ts she provides like sunlight, rain, oxygen, hydrogen, carbon in the form of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, micro-organisms, worms, enzymes and the list goes on. In a live, living soil, your farm will attract more moisture, your healthy pasture and plants will absorb more sunlight (photosynthesis) and your soil will

store more mineral and more water. This system transfers on into the environment, increasing the wildlife, bee populations and frog population, that’s when we really begin working with Mother Nature on a full time basis — it’s magic!

The biodiversity of nature is important to each and every one of us cohabitating on this planet. We need to preserve and look after the whole environment, where farms and production units are all part of the whole eco system working with Mother Nature and taking care of all the free natural capital that she provides to make everything sustainable for continuous top quality production.

The rst plant appeared 460 million years ago and the planet has done a great job providing for all life on its surface and under the sea ever since. There is no need to stop farming; our planet is a great provider. However there is a real and urgent need to farm more sustainably with a natural production system like Agrissentials where our best on earth fertilisers do not cause erosion of top soil, nor water pollution. With only a minor change in food production methods, we can turn this whole situation around.

Agrissentials is leading the way in regenerating and remineralising soils in New Zealand with our multi mineral,

microbial rich fertilisers. Since pioneering this industry over 20 years ago, we have stood by farmers and helped them reach success after success.

Dealing a pair of aces

The English gentry had their land rovers for grouse hunting, the army had their off-road vehicles for the pursuit of — at the time — communist militias, and Joe Citizen drove a sensible big saloon car or station wagon. The change came at the start of that tumultuous decade of big hair and leg warmers. Toyota’s FJ, the original Range Rover, and Mitsubishi’s Pajero changed the way we looked at off-road travel. Soon would come the leather seats, mini bars, school run specials and faux-wheel-drives. But in the springtime of the SUV, Pajero was a big name. Now it’s set to become so again.

This year sees the relaunch of the badge from Mitsubishi, replacing the outgoing Challenger with two variants, in much the same way that Mercedes has achieved with their GL-E class. The Pajero returns with a solid, angular look, backed up by the power of a 3.2 litre intercooled turbo diesel.

Combine the over 400Nm of torque from this power plant with acres of grip, and you can appreciate how the Pajero achieves its rated three ton towing capacity. Inside, we are reminded that the modern driver demands more

Smooth operator — the Pajero Sport rounds out the hard lines of its bigger brother, but still conquers mud and snow

comforts than his 1980s counterpart — it’s all here, but so too, is a convenient space for a second battery under the hood, and everything in place for the fitting of bars, winches, lights and other off-road necessities.

This is the marque which monstered the Paris to Dakar for ten years.

The only small complaint — the colour palette doesn’t match the presence of the Pajero’s design, with only ‘high resale value’ neutrals and metallics available. Sitting next to the Pajero in the new Mitsubishi lineup is its slick and aerodynamic little brother,

the Pajero Sport. If the big bruiser above is all about power and capability, then this offering is more of a crossover into the realm of comfort and connectivity.

Don’t get us wrong — the pair of Pajeros blur the line nicely, and the Sport is still no slouch when the going gets rough. It puts style and sophistication to the fore, for the driver who will only rarely venture off the beaten track. When you do need to test the mettle of the Sport, it proves it’s no show pony.

CorrosionX Marine is most probably New Zealand’s fastest penetrating lubricant and it’s nding a new market freeing up seized parts, like wheel nuts, anges and hubs in commercial tyre shops around the country.

As preventative protection, CorrosionX Heavy Duty is applied between the wheel base and the rim making wheel changes simpler and faster.

Air tools and jacks are also protected from corrosive elements especially in work shops close to the sea — a cost saving boon for company accountants as well as keeping equipment on-line at all times.

Salt and sulphur can get into the tools with the air through the compressor and lters causing costly damage that may be further fuelled with condensation and heat.
