For almost 35 years, Pet Project Foundation (PPF) and the San Clemente-Dana Point Animal Shelter

have been united in a unique partnership to rescue and provide pro-humane care to the lost and

abandoned animals of our two cities. This special shelter has maintained a progressive and innovative

approach to animal welfare to ensure that every animal in its care receives a warm bed, outstanding

veterinary care, nutritious food, and daily socialization and exercise – all provided until a permanent,

loving home can be found.

Hello Friends,

With 2017 in full swing we are proud to say we have

already had many, many dogs, cats and rabbits adopted!

This year is shaping up to be one of our best years ever

saving animals.

Of course, this cannot be done without all the help

we get from you, our donors. With all our programs,

we need a lot of donations to fund them. A few of

our programs are Spay N Neuter, Trap N Release,

Community Outreach, and A Rescue Mission Program.

All save animals in one way or another. For more information on these programs and others,

please visit our web page, www.petprojectfoundation.org.

A major highlight already for us this year was the adoption of Anvil, a long time resident of

ours! We all miss Anvil as he was a volunteer favorite and a wonderful dog. He is in a loving

home, check out his story on page 4.

Being an all volunteer organization, many thanks need to go out to all our volunteers. These

volunteers, walk the dogs, pet the cats and rabbits, help out with our fundraising events, and

do whatever it takes to get all our animals adopted. A big thanks to our Board of Directors.

Our board goes above and beyond to make sure that we never loose sight of our mission and

to keep us moving in the right direction!

Please take a minute to visit our website, check out our events and perhaps you can attend

one! In order to be successful, we need your help and one way to help is to attend our

fundraisers and donate. Our annual gala is the end of September (see page 10) and it is sure to

be a great time for all.

All the best to you!

Shop For PPF!

“YOOHOO!!!” Laurie would call out soon after arriving at her workplace at the state park, and the tabby with the white paws would come running for her breakfast. She wouldn’t come close, being wary of humans, as feral cats are. Pet Project Foundation was called by Laurie, and we trapped Yoohoo, got her spayed, a rabies shot, and a dose of flea meds. Because Yoohoo was not adoptable, she was returned to the park, where she would continue to live,

work, and be fed for 12 years by the employees, the personnel changing every few years. And work she did in exchange for her regular meals. She kept rats and mice at bay from her territory, occasionally leaving proof of her hunting abilities.

But after all those years, Yoohoo was not as spry, and one of the times she dashed across the road, as she was inclined to do, a vehicle hit her, severely injuring her pelvis and leg. PPF stepped in once again to pay for the care of her injuries. She was kept at the vet’s office for weeks, healing, and it was here that it was discovered that all those years of feeding and caring had turned Yoohoo into quite a nice cat, now friendly with humans! It was time to bring Yoohoo in, to retire her from her life of working and surviving the harsh elements endured by an outdoor cat.

About that time, Betsy had lost her own cat to kidney disease and was wanting to help an in-need kitty. Yoohoo had special needs. She walked with a gimpy hip, needed special food, and needed lots of patience and time. It was not an easy transition for either lady. Betsy was used to a “normal” cat. Yoohoo had not lived the life of a normal cat, and she had to adjust to being inside.

But time and patience paid off. Two years later Betsy writes, “I wanted to write and tell you that Yoohoo (now I call her Baby Girl) is doing so well. We have a wonderful relationship and she sticks to me like glue! She now knows I just adore her, and we get along so great. She sleeps against me every night and just wants to be near me no matter what. She is such a sweet girl, and I am blessed to have her in my life. Thank you for all you do for all the cats and know that this is a SUCCESS story! She’s a very happy girl and so am I. I hope these pics will work to tell how happy we are and that others should ADOPT! SO REWARDING!”

Many thanks to Betsy for sharing Yoohoo’s transformative adoption storywith us!

Pearl is a female Siberian Husky and Samoyed mix who is about 3 years old. She loves to run around and play in the yard! She’s very energetic, playful dog who

would be great for an active person/couple. Pearl would need an experienced owner who is active and willing to do obedience

training with her. She gets along well with adults, but we recommend a home with no children. Her interactions with other dogs have played well together. Pearl would make a devoted companion! Come by the shelter to visit with her and see if you can give her the forever loving home this beautiful girl deserves!

Chiquita is a 12 pound Chihuahua mix about 14 months old, who’s trainer calls Chiquita Banana, with love. She had a rough start by getting pregnant at 10 months because her mom let in a stray dog that was scratching at the front door. Unfortunately her mom was threatened with eviction if she didn’t give Chiquita up. So, thank you to the San Clemente-Dana Point Animal Shelter and Pet Project Foundation, Chiquita has found a wonderful place where she has lots of friends, learns new skills and meets great volunteers. She’s now ready her new forever home. She loves other dogs and is very people friendly. Could this sweetheart be the perfect match for you? Come visit her at the shelter and to see if she’d be a great fit for your family!

Malaia is a gorgeous brown mixed-breed spayed female rabbit. She is strikingly beautiful with a cocoa brown coat dotted with tan highlights. She’s a little timid,

but very sweet, and very intelligent. She doesn’t mind being held and petted once you can catch her. She will really blossom in a home

where she’s handled and treated like the queen that she is! Malaia has a tendency toward bladder sludge if she’s fed pellets, so she’s on a veggie-and-hay diet. She is in foster care due to her dietary needs. If you’re interested and have the time for a very special girl, please contact the shelter at [email protected]

or call 949-595-8899 if you’d like to arrange a meeting with her.

Cecily was one of several ruby-eyed white dwarf youngsters dumped at a park in Dana Point Highlands with their mother. Her mother and siblings have all been

adopted over time, but Cecily has remained behind for almost two years. Unfortunately, ruby-eyed white rabbits are typically the most difficult

rabbits to find homes for - even though the volunteers think she’s beautiful, some people can’t get over the red eyes. She’s also a bit opinionated when it comes to being picked up, but she’s a softie at heart and enjoys being held and petted after she’s in your arms or lap. She also likes being the center of attention. One of the volunteers calls her “nosy” - if people are standing around

talking near her, she has to come over and see what’s going on, as though she’s wondering why everyone isn’t paying attention to her!

We know Cecily will find a great home one of these days, and the lucky person who adopts her will find out that they have an intelligent, funny, cute, cuddle bun who will make their life so much richer. She just needs to connect with the right person who will appreciate her for the wonderful rabbit hiding behind the red eyes!

It’s kitten season! Although in this part of the country, where we enjoy mild weather that triggers female cats to go into heat (among other triggers), this is the time of year that we see an uptick in

the numbers of kittens entering shelters. They are found by citizens of our communities. Sometimes in a park. Sometimes in their

yards. Sometimes in their garages! Sometimes even in the engine compartment of their cars!!!

And the situations vary widely. Kittens with moms, orphans who need bottle feeding, orphans who are eating on their own. Sometimes just one lone kitten. And sometimes kittens who don’t know the love and gentleness of people, need

socializing. These last are the ones who are the toughest to get adopted. Even though Pet Project Foundation fosters them in

volunteers’ homes for a time, sometimes they are still wary of new people.

We had a litter of four kittens brought in just like those at the beginning of this kitten season, and they were already

four months old when we got them. The older this type of kitten is, the harder to socialize he will be. Named the R kittens – Rudy, Remy, Ryan, and Rosebud – they are adorable little ones who need special homes. Patient, quiet and loving. They have such potential to be terrific pets, as long

as you are aware that they will be timid with new experiences and new guests who enter your home.

All the staff at the San Clemente-Dana Point Animal Shelter is very proud to share, Kay Lehmacher, a dedicated Pet Project Foundation volunteer for 12 years, has been awarded the City’s Annual Volunteer of the Year award for 2017! San Clemente Mayor Kathy Ward hosted the Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon event to give thanks to the members of the San Clemente Volunteer Corps, who are dedicated to the enrichment of civic, neighborhood, and family life.

Kay started as a dog handler every Tuesday morning at the shelter, making sure all the pooches were walked, played, fed and loved. She transitioned to becoming a Pet Project Foundation board member and most recently was the President of the Board of Directors. She is now dedicated to fundraising for Pet Project Foundation. Kay has worked, chaired and co-chaired many of the fundraisers that Pet Project Foundation does each year. These fundraisers include San Clemente Fiesta, Tail of Two Cities (our biggest annual gala), Oktoberfest, 2 Paws Up Event, Saddleback Dog Fair, Annual Christmas at the Harbor, Barks N Brews, Wag-A-Thon/Street Fair, and many more.

Always thinking of ways to make the animals in our care more comfortable, Kay spearheaded one of our most successful fundraisers, the awnings over the dog’s kennels at the shelter. These are permanent awnings that protect the dogs from sun exposure and weather elements and Kay was instrumental in securing all the donations required to achieve the goal!

Kay is a dedicated volunteer who will do anything to help with fundraising, get the word out about what Pet Project Foundation does to help keep the San Clemente-Dana Point Animal Shelter a pro-humane shelter and to help as many animals as possible find their forever home. She’s also adopted three dogs, Schatzi, Sadie & Charlie, all from our shelter! Kay’s integrity, passion for animals, dedication to Pet Project Foundation, and her ability to get things done, makes her one of the best volunteers we have. Congratulations Kay! We are not only proud of your recognition, but are grateful for your never ending energy and support of our shelter and animals!

sponsorship may be given in honor of or as a memorial.

KENNEL SPONSORSHIPSponsorships are available for 6 months at $200.00 or 1 year at $365.00. For as little as $1.00 a day the animals at the San Clemente-Dana

I wanted to reach out and share my success story with your shelter. I

recently lost my buddy, whom I found at your shelter almost 13 years ago.

I found him (and you) through a Google search. I really wanted to rescue a Schnauzer and the search came up with him first. You were calling him ‘Chazz’ at the time. He had been found in a field, no collar, no tags, no chip. He was scraggly and unsocialized; wanted nothing to do with pretty much anyone. But, for some reason, when he met me, he wanted to play in the yard. The next day I came to pick him up. Leaving your shelter I decided to rename him as I didn’t think ‘Chazz’ fit him. Just as we pulled onto the 5 North, I saw the sign for Riley State Park. When I read aloud that he popped up in the back seat. I ask him if he liked that name. He howled. He answered to ‘Riley’ from that day on. I travel for a living and drive from city to city. Riley almost always traveled with me. He had seen 46 of the 50 states. When I returned to a city, people would ask if he was with me and implore me to bring him in so they could say ‘hi’. He was quite popular all across the country. He was quite the ‘road dog’.

For being a bit wild at first, Riley very quickly became a lover of everyone. We’d go to dog parks all across the country and he loved meeting new dogs, people. He didn’t meet anyone he didn’t like or want to say ‘hi’ to. Thirteen years have gone by so fast. He was my solid companion in all things. I will miss him terribly, but am changed by the time we spent together. Changed by the opportunity your shelter gave me in adopting him. I’ve donated in his name as have numerous friends across the country. Hopefully, that little bit of money will help another lost pup find a loving family.

OUR MISSION

Lost and abandoned animals have a second chance at a good life thanks to the Pet Project Foundation (PPF) and the San Clemente-Dana Point Animal Shelter.

The mission of the Pet Project Foundation is ‘to enhance the quality of life for all companion animals in a pro-humane manner through compassion responsibility, education, and service.’

This mission is successful with ongoing support of the shelter from our community and veterinarian professionals. This special shelter provides food, housing, exercise, training, medical care and love for homeless animals until they are re-united with their owners or with their new forever homes.

We could not do it without your help!
