SINCE celebrating the South Fremantle colts premiership together in 2012, the football careers of four of the Bulldogs’ 2016 recruits have gone full circle. Dylan Main, Mason Shaw, Blaine Johnson and Tom Vandeleur all held the colts premiership cup aloft after a victory over arch-rivals East Fremantle. Within months of that victory Shaw had been drafted to Port Adelaide, while at the end of the 2013 season Johnson was drafted to Carlton, Main to West Coast and Vandeleur to Fremantle. With the alignment of West Coast and Fremantle to East Perth and Peel respectively, Main headed to the Royals in 2014 and Vandeleur to Peel. Now the quartet is back together after all were de-listed by their AFL clubs at the end of 2015. Johnson was the only one to experience the game at the highest level, having made his debut

for Carlton in 2014. He played five games that year and added another two in 2015. “They are South Fremantle boys who came up through our list and our system before they went away,” said second-year Bulldogs coach Todd Curley. “For one reason or another it didn’t work out the first time but the way they have come back and they’ve embraced our playing group. They have played with a lot of them so they are really driven to play well and, from our point of view, we want to help them get better and hopefully get another chance at AFL level.” Their return bolsters a Bulldogs team that would have been hopeful of also securing the signature of another former player, league premiership star Clint Jones. However, after his 149-game stint with St Kilda followed by his time with Sandringham, Jones has opted to play with Perth, giving them a massive injection of experience and talent. “We’re in pretty good shape,” Jones said of the Demons ahead of the new season. “We’ve got some more senior players like Angus Graham (Richmond and Adelaide) and Spencer White (St Kilda) in to join the senior players we have. “I’ve done the majority of the pre-season and feel really fit. The big ground at Lathlain is a bit of a change from the VFL grounds I played on last year so I’m looking forward to getting out there in the big spaces of that ground.” Other quality names to return to the WAFL this season include Greg Broughton (returning to Subiaco from the Gold Coast) and Jared Hardisty (back at Claremont from Hawthorn), while Sandover medallist Rory O’Brien is back at Peel Thunder after five years at East Fremantle. Premiers Subiaco are also preparing for life after some big-name departures. “From season 2014 to 2015 we lost seven premiership players and this year we are looking at about the same numbers,” coach Jarrad Schofield said. “We’ve brought in Adam Cockie, an ex Subi boy coming in from Sandringham, Greg Broughton comes back from the Gold Coast and we’ve brought in young Ben Sokol from South Fremantle. He kicked 39 goals in the reserves last year so we expect him to step up a bit similar to a Frank Stockley or Joel Latham when they came across a couple of years ago.”

If you have a query regarding WAFL memorabilia, send photographs and/or details to Sean at [email protected] or Sean Cowan, c/o Football Budget, PO Box 911, Subiaco WA 6904. His website is at www.waflcollectables.webs.com and he also can be contacted on 0412 760 004.

After making plenty of new discoveries in 2015, WAFL Collectables is back for another year – and it couldn’t have come soon enough. Thankfully, during some of those sweltering summer days, I was able to unearth a few new items with which to kick off this first column. The first came courtesy of Greg, who added another set of posters to the growing list WAFL pin ups already on the WAFL Collectables website. Greg collected his incomplete set back in 1975 when the now-defunct Sunday Independent newspaper published a series of eight WAFL player posters from late June through to early August. One star from each club was chosen to appear. Like most newspaper posters, these are likely to be particularly rare because the large size and poor quality paper made them difficult to store. Many would have ended up on bedroom walls and been discarded when they started looking a little worse for wear. The series is a beauty, though, and features some players for whom you would really struggle to find any other memorabilia. Greg’s posters included Peter Burton (Subiaco), John Lewis (Claremont), Colin Lofts (Perth), Bill Dempsey (West Perth), Bill Walker (Swan Districts) and Brian Ciccotosto (South Fremantle). I would be interested to hear from anyone who might be able to tell me which players were on the East Fremantle and East Perth posters were. And Greg’s weren’t the only vintage posters I saw for the first time over summer. While sorting through some old photographs, I came across a picture of what looks like a West Perth supporter’s bedroom door from the mid-70s. It’s adorned with photographs of the resident’s favourite WAFL players, including Alan Watling, Mel Whinnen and Ian Logan.

But there are also a couple of nice collectables pinned to the door, including one of the Cardinals patches that were issued by the Daily News in both 1966 and 1967 and a beautiful “Cardinals for Premiers” pennant. Both would fetch good prices at auction today, especially the pennant. What I hadn’t seen before, though, was the “Courageous Cardies” poster on which the patch had been pinned. A similar slogan, “Courageous Cardinals”, was also printed on a set of posters that were produced by Page Photographics in 1973. Any information about the new poster and its maker would be greatly appreciated. The photo was in a set that appears to have been taken in the period 1975-1977. While I suspect there are still more sets

of WAFL posters from years gone by waiting to be discovered, I doubt there are too many trading cards or cigarette cards that we don’t already know about. The reason for this is that card collecting is a very popular pastime and there are plenty of websites and books that have attempted to list every card every produced by certain manufacturers or with certain themes.

Damien Green’s Aussie Rules Collectables site, for instance, has been going for years and relies on collectors Australia-wide to report their discoveries, including cards featuring WAFL players. But a new WAFL card was recently discovered when former East Perth and WA star Ken McAullay was clearing out some paperwork. McAullay won the Tassie Medal for his performances at the national carnival in 1972 and was named in the All Australian side, along with East Perth captain Mal Brown. The Royals were obviously pretty

happy to have two players in the All Australian side and ordered both Brown and McAullay to front up for a photo shoot in their green All Australian blazers soon after the carnival had finished. The plan was to make some trading cards from the photographs that were taken. But McAullay, better known in football circles these days as “Noddy”, never turned up. Brown did, and a single black-and-white card was issued by East Perth Football Club. Noddy’s copy is the only one I have ever seen. Undoubtedly the oldest discovery I made over summer, however, was a rare book that a western suburbs couple had inherited some time ago from a deceased uncle. Among the uncle’s collection was also an album full of cigarette cards, including some of the 1907 Sniders & Abrahams cards that featured WAFL players. But the book was the highlight. Published in 1906, it was called “The West Australian Football Guide” and it attempted to give a history of football in this state to that point, along with details of some of the star players at the major clubs. Compiled by Daily News journalist AW Martin, who covered football under the pseudonym “Half Back”, and EW Brewer (“Little Mark”), the guide was the first one I had ever seen in private hands. Research has shown that there were at least 10 football guides produced in WA between 1893 and 1906. Some of these covered all codes of football, but most concentrated on the Australian game. Sadly, I have only ever seen the 1904 and 1906 guides and not even the state library has a copy of any of those issued each year from 1893 to 1898, or copy of the 1902 version.

MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2 (UNIVERSAL PICTURES)My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is the highly-anticipated follow-up to the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time. Audiences worldwide embraced the immensely relatable characters, seeing their own families reflected in the adorably brash and bold Portokalos clan members. Written by Academy Award nominee Nia Vardalos, who stars alongside the entire returning cast, the film reveals a Portokalos family secret that will bring the beloved characters back together for an even bigger and Greeker wedding. The SAG Award-nominated returning cast includes Vardalos, who stars as Toula; John Corbett (Tv’s Parenthood) as Toula’s husband, Ian; Lainie Kazan (Beaches) and Michael Constantine (The Juror) as her parents, Maria And Gus; and Bruce Gray (Crimson Peak) and Fiona Reid (The Time Traveler’s Wife) as Ian’s parents, Rodney and Harriet.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is in cinemas March 24.

ZOOTOPIA (WALT DISNEY PICTURES)The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when rookie Officer Judy Hopps (voice of Ginnifer Goodwin) arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde (voice of Jason Bateman), to solve the mystery. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Zootopia, a comedy-adventure directed by Byron Howard (Tangled, Bolt) and Rich Moore (Wreck-It Ralph, The Simpsons) and co-directed by Jared Bush (Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero), opens in theaters on March 17.

Royals great passes baton to WulffDerek Chadwick is pleased his record has gone to another Royal who bleeds black and blue. Round one of WAFL 2016 isn’t just about the new. It is also an occasion to mark the tenure of another of East Perth’s greats. Co-captain Craig Wulff will become the club’s longest-serving player when he makes his 270th league appearance in the season-opener against Claremont. He will pass the games mark held by Chadwick for 45 years. Wulff would have capped the total last year if East Perth had gained the one thing that has eluded the 33-year-old over his 15-season career – a premiership. Ironically, the same feat eluded Chadwick, who played in seven grand finals without a medal. Yet, the fleet-footed ball-getter proved during the 1960s he was one of the competition’s best players. And he was a handy Sheffield Shield batsman, too. The 2016 campaign is expected to be Wulff’s last. But he still plays an important role in East Perth’s hybrid WAFL team that includes a raft of West Coast AFL players. Wulff is the general that helps bind all parties together on the field. Claremont is also bridging a gap early in the new season. The premiership players that had so well paved the foundation for the club early in the decade have moved on. However, during the pre-season competition coach Michael Broadbridge got positive signs from Oliver Tate, Ryan Lim and Darcy Cameron and confidence a new wave of Tigers would make its mark on the team. A healthy skipper, Jake Murphy, will also make a difference to Claremont this season.

PEEL v SuBiACoAs one of the AFL host clubs, there is always a sense of expectation for Peel. And the Thunder can get an early gauge on their level on improvement against the dual reigning premier. Gerald Ugle takes over as Peel captain and can look to marshal a wealth of AFL talent – as well as returning Sandover medallist Rory O’Brien - in round one as Fremantle has an AFL rest. Ugle admits the manner in which the Thunder exited their first WAFL finals series last year still burns. Subiaco eye another triple premiership in 2016 but must first cover the loss of key personnel Matt Boland, Shane Yarran (who will ironically play for Peel this year) and midfield jet Sam Menegola.

EAST FREMAnTLE v SWAn DiSTRiCTSRob Wiley’s repair work at Shark Park gets off to an immediate start. The new East Fremantle coach has worked overtime in pre-season to rebuild a team ravaged by internal disruption last season. Wiley has made sure there is experience around the club with Brett Peake returning and former Carlton player Matthew Watson joining the line-up. Swans have been hit hard by departures but Greg Harding has proved a mastercoach, garnering his playing resources into a highly competitive unit. And it will be the input of the club’s outstanding crop of youngsters such as Jacob Coniglio, Jake Nuich, Jason Daniels and Albert Dean who provide black and white fans with considerable excitement over the next six months.

SouTh FREMAnTLE v WEST PERThA break overseas and the chance to look at some sports in the US has inspired South Fremantle coach Todd Curley for his second season at the helm of the port club. And on his return he got to welcome some experienced talent that, combined with the Bulldogs strong junior development program, will underpin the team’s progress in 2016. Former AFL-listed players Dylan Main, Mason Shaw, Blaine Johnson and Tom Vandeleur return to the red and white guernsey. West Perth endured a steady pre-season but the absence of key playmaker Shane Nelson because of a broken hand will be an early obstacle the Falcons will have to overcome.

Former Field Umpire Craig O’Donoghue has been appointed as WAFL Field Umpire Coach for the 2016 season. O’Donoghue who started umpiring in Victoria before moving to Perth several years ago, has umpired 31 league games and the 2012 colts grand final. WAFL Umpire Manager Darryl Sinclair congratulated O’Donoghue on his appointment and said he would bring a wealth of experience to the role. “I have no doubt Craig will take the inexperienced field umpires to another level,” he said. “The WAFL umpiring team lacks some experience, with only six umpires across the three disciplines having umpired over 100 league games. The coaching team is providing extensive coaching to ensure the umpires are prepared for league football. “We are doing everything possible to prepare these young people for the challenges of league football and I am confident we will service WAFL Football competently.” Sinclair also paid tribute to departing Field Umpire Coach Gareth Parker, who has stepped down after two years in the role. “Gareth has done a great job but simply cannot continue to dedicate the time required for the role. It is unfortunate he can no longer continue and we thank him sincerely for his two years at the helm.”

More than 400 talented Indigenous players and coaches put their skills on show in front of a crowd of more than 2,000 at this year’s Nicky Winmar Carnival in Mandurah. A record 14 teams made up of footballers aged 15 years and under played a total 45 matches in the round-robin style tournament held at Bendigo Bank Stadium on Sunday, March 6. The day-long carnival concluded with a closely-fought grand final where the South

Talent Shines at Nicky Winmar CarnivalWest team claimed the Nicky Winmar Cup with a 3.5 (23) to 2.1 (13) victory over Subiaco. Participants travelled from all over Western Australia to take part in the event which has grown rapidly in numbers since its inception in 2009 where only five teams took part. Co-ordinated by the West Australian Football Commission in partnership with the Department of Sport and Recreation and the City of Mandurah and sponsored by RediMed and the Australian Defence Force, the carnival provides an opportunity for young players to have their talent recognised.

Community Engagement Manager Paul Mugambwa said the players took part in extensive training and mentoring sessions in preparation for the big day. “A lot of hard work was done in the build up to the event with players receiving various presentations and sessions on health and well-being, drugs and alcohol and anti-social behavior,” Mugambwa said. “A huge focus was also placed on school attendance as a requirement for participants to be involved in the event.”» The South West team celebrating their win over Subiaco in

the Nicky Winmar Cup.

The North female team brought home a win against the South female team in the Exhibition match for Aboriginal women aged 17 and over. Female Football Co-ordinator Allana Dickie said the top players would be selected for the Indigenous All Star Team which will play in the Women’s Two Way Learning match against the WAWFL All Stars in July. “The girls played with such a high level of skill and intensity and it’s fantastic knowing many of these players, for the first time, are now involved in club football,” Dickie said. The carnival also focussed on the development of carnival coaches and the introduction of the new Aboriginal Umpiring program. The six-week program, which started last year, provided another avenue for students from diverse communities to be involved in football beyond that of playing the game. “The Nicky Winmar Carnival was utilised as an opportunity for 10 Aboriginal boys from this program to put what they had learnt into practice,” Mugambwa said. “Overall the carnival has grown to be more of a display of unique talent and the development of our players, coaches, umpires and administrators both on and off the field.”
