Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Welcome to back to Term 3. I hope everyone has had a great 2 weeks away from school. I know a number of
you got away which after the events of Term 1 and 2 would have been well deserved. We have a very busy
term ahead of us with the School Concert in week 7 being one of the highlights. Please diary the 3rd and 4th
September at Pipitea Marae.
Students have come back refreshed and ready to get back into routines around schooling. Well done all families.
All staff look forward to having a great Term 3 focussing on learning and wellbeing of students.
A warm welcome to the following new students and their families who have joined us recently at Wadestown
School: Grayson Paul Room 1, Finlay Paul Room 0, Phoebe McArthur Room 4, Emilia Lopez Beuke Room1, Liam
Crutchley Room 1 and Bonnie Kerr Room 3.
Year 8 Toastmasters Leadership Evening - Thursday 23rd July (TONIGHT)
Our Year 8 leadership programme will conclude their course tonight in our school hall starting at 7.00 pm. We
look forward to the students performing on the evening and pass our thanks onto Nick Julian and the supporting
Toastmaster adults who have come into school and worked alongside our students over the last two terms.
Western Zone Inter School Cross Country All the best to our top runners who will be representing Wadestown School at the Western Zone Inter School
Cross Country on Monday 27th July. Our school cross country highlighted how good our students are and I
would expect some very good results from Karori Park next week. All the best to all the students representing
Wadestown School.
Stargazing Evening - Thursday 30th July This event has been organised by a group of Year 7 & 8 students for Thursday 30th July starting at 6.00 pm. We
are very hopeful of a good turnout of students and families for this event. Please contact our school parent
coordinator Peter McLellan by email [email protected] so we have an idea of numbers attending.
What: A Star Gazing Evening
When: Thursday 30 July 6pm to 8pm
Where: Wadestown School - Tennis Courts
The kids in the Science Squad have been busy organising an event and would like to invite you all along. So why
not take the family out, fill the hotties and hot chocolates and turn your heads to the sky?
There will also be a number of different telescopes to try. Plus astronomers on hand to offer up expertise.
There will be a special stargazing talk @ 6:30 pm.
Note: We are in the hands of Tāwhirimātea when it comes to clear skies and the weather. If we need to cancel
the evening we will do so by lunchtime on July 30.
Regards, Lee, Susy & Pete
Matariki the Maori New Year 2020 Matariki is the Maori name for a group of 7 stars known as the Pleiades Star Cluster.
The stars are named, Matariki, Ururangi, Waipunarangi, Tupu-ā-rangi, Tupu-ā-nuku, Waitā and Waitī.
Some people think of Matariki as the Mother Star with six daughters, and it is often referred to as the 7 sisters.
Others think that Matariki are ‘the eyes of the god’
Matariki appears in the eastern sky sometime around the shortest day of the year, and is thought to determine
how successful the harvest crop will be in the coming season. The brighter the stars, the more productive the
crop will be.
Matariki began on Monday 13th July and there are events through to July 25th in the Wellington region. Have
a look at https://matarikiwellington.org/events for further helpful information.

Community Sports Banks are a drop off point for unused or outgrown sports gear, and
for that gear to be picked up and used by families that would otherwise not be able to afford it. Sport poverty is a growing issue within our communities with three main barriers to sport participation; subs/fees, equipment costs, and transport. The aim of the Community Sports Banks is to reduce/eliminate the cost of equipment for those in need and by this, increase sport participation and get more people active.
Your nearest Community Sports Bank is:
St Ninians Uniting Church 208 Karori Road, Karori Open Tuesday 4pm - 5.30pm Gear can also be dropped off at Karori Community Centre, 7 Beauchamp St, Karori (open Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri 9am-2pm, Wed 9am – 6pm). For more information, visit our facebook page: www.facebook.com/CommunitySportsBank
