It gives me great pleasure to write thisforeword for the Town Guide on behalf of Wadebridge Town Council.

We at the Town Council are very proud of our delightful town and we trust that the information in this booklet is useful to residents and visitors alike.

Wadebridge boasts many individual retail shops, so if cycling on the Camel Trailis not your thing, an easy stroll around thetown, stopping off for coffee, may beperfect for you.

For children there is a new play area, alongside the main car park in the centre ofthe town. From here you can see ChallengeBridge, so named because it was built with the help of the 1991 television series,Challenge Anneka. This leads to EgloshaylePlaying Fields, where you will find anothertwo excellent children’s play areas.

The Town Council is the custodian of areasof land in the town used as parks or leasedto various groups and organisations, such as

the cricket, tennis, rugby and bowls clubs. These organisations are important inmaintaining a strong community spirit andsporting interest for all ages and abilities.

My Mayor’s Surgery in the Town Hall is on the first Saturday of every month. It has proved very successful, and is always busy with local residents coming along andtalking to me, about their ideas for makingWadebridge an even better place to live.

There are exciting plans for a possibleBMX/Skate Park and Wadebridge couldsoon have its own town museum thanks to a local developer.

Councillors from Egloshayle, St. Breock and Wadebridge Councils are working on a Neighbourhood Plan to provide a vision for the future of Wadebridge and the surrounding area. The Plan will take up to two years to complete with the helpand involvement of many residents andbusinesses in the area.

One of the earliest recorded references toWadebridge was in 1312 when a marketand two fairs were granted to Wade; thename Wadebridge did not appear until the15th century when the Bridge on Wool wasconstructed. The surrounding larger parishesof Saint Breoke & Egloshayle dominated thelocality at that time due to the lack of aparish church in Wadebridge. Saint BreokeChurch has records going back to 1257ADand Egloshayle not long after.

Historically Wadebridge was seen as amarket town on the banks of the CamelRiver or ‘a market town whose bridge isbuilt on wool’. In latter days it became moreof a foundry town and the cattle marketclosed in 2001 following the foot and mouthepidemic. The town is centred around theRiver Camel which cuts the town into twoparts joined together by the Bridge on Wool.

The BridgeThis wonderful medieval arch bridge builtbetween 1468 and 1485 provided the

lowest crossing of the River Camel until thebypass bridge was built in 1993. The bridgeis known locally as the 'Bridge on Wool' as it was reputedly built on woolsacks.Another reason for the name was that thebridge was paid for from the profits madefrom wool sales – a rich commodity in thearea at that time. The building of the Bridgewas instigated by the Vicar of Egloshayle -Thomas Lovibond - and it was widened in 1852 and 1963 and comprises of 17arches along its length. At the current timeonly 13 of these arches are still visible, therest hidden beneath the row of shopsleading from the junction with the Platt.

In addition to the Bridge on Wool there is a pedestrian crossing of the River Camel inbetween the town centre parks - EgloshaylePark to the east and Jubilee Fields to thewest. This bridge was built in 1991 as oneof the challenges on ‘Challenge Anneka’where Anneka Rice completed communityprojects. The bridge is named the ChallengeBridge but is more commonly known as

Anneka’s Bridge or Bailey Bridge namedafter a popular local doctor – Dr Bailey -who had the original idea for the bridge.

The original river crossing was locatedwhere the bypass bridge now stands – theshortest crossing across the river. To eitherside of this crossing stood two early chapels- St Michael’s to the west and Kings Chapelto the east. Travellers would pray for a safecrossing on one side and give thanks on the other side – however there remains no visible sign of these Chapels.

St Breock Church stands in Nancent(meaning nan – valley and cent – holy inCornish) and Egloshayle (eglos meaningchurch and hayle meaning estuary inCornish) stands on low ground near theRiver Camel and is dedicated to St Michaelor St Petroc. In addition to the Bridge onWool, Thomas Lovibond also gifted the 80 foot church tower on the parish churchin Egloshayle.

The Town HallThe Town Hall is in the centre of town on The Platt and houses the Town Council offices. Built in 1888 under theChairmanship of Sir Paul Molesworth at acost of £3,000, it was called MolesworthExchange and was used as an agricultural

& metal exchange. Taken over by the TownTrust, it came into the ownership of theParish Council in 1945. The façade of the building changed in 1962 whenrefurbishment and improvement of the thenrun down building was completed - theoriginal Robartes coat of arms was relocatedfrom the front door to the side entrance and the carved granite coat of arms of theMolesworth family remained above the frontdoor. During the refurbishment a large mural depicting the building of the bridgewas painted on the back wall of the stage in the main hall, which still remains.

River CamelThe river is an important part of the town’sprosperity: until shortly after the SecondWorld War, cargo ships moored alongsidethe wharfs and harbour in the townexporting grain and Delabole slate. It is said that Guineaport is so named as ships’captains were required to pay a ‘Guinea’ to moor there. The river continues toenhance the town with a major attractionbeing the Camel trail - see later for moreinformation. When the extraction of sand for local use ceased, the river silted up and cargo ships were no longer able tonavigate the river.

The Camel Trail is an 18 mile traffic free, surfaced and virtually level multi-use trailwhich passes through some of the mostspectacular countryside in the south west and is arguably the most successfulrecreational multi-use trail in the UK. Itprovides access to the beautiful Cornishcountryside along a disused railway line -the final leg of the Atlantic Coast Expressjourney from Waterloo - betweenWenfordbridge, Bodmin, Wadebridge and Padstow. It was immortalised in

THE CAMEL TRAIL

Camel Trail to Bodmin © Colin Ward

Sir John Betjeman's ‘Cornwall’ as “themost beautiful train journey I know”.

Following the disused line, cyclists hug theCamel Estuary from Padstow to Wadebridgebefore joining the route through the deeplyincised and beautifully wooded CamelValley to Bodmin. At Bodmin yet anotherline, one of the most historic in the country, winds its way inland to the foot of BodminMoor where it comes to an end nearBlisland, a pretty moorland village.

Wadebridge is the perfect place to be to watchwildlife in beautiful surroundings. It is nowbecoming famous amongst bird watchers andindeed mammal watchers as the place to seespecial animals and birds all of the year round.

The town is fortunate that pivotal to this is theCamel Trail. All along the length of the routecan be seen stunning natural beauty includingsuch rare sights as kingfishers, dippers, buzzards, roe deer and otters. When taking the trail toward the coast from Wadebridge one can watch huge flocks of wintering wadersand wildfowl. Numbers of golden plover in thethousands make the estuary an internationallyimportant wintering site and they are in thecompany of many other species such aswigeon, shoveler, teal, geese and both tundraand whooper swans amongst the 50-60resident mute swans.

There can be very few places in Britain thatcan boast of so many different wildlife habitatsall within a 15 minute drive or a half day hike.

Summer or winter, there is always somethingspecial to be seen from the Camel Trail.

BeachesMany excellent beaches lie within a ten mileradius of Wadebridge, including Polzeath(one of the best surfing beaches in thecountry), Daymer Bay, Rock, Padstow andHarlyn, all have the famous golden sands of Cornwall.

Bodmin & Wenford Railway Wadebridge is a town steeped in railwayhistory. The original passenger line wasopened on 4 July 1834 and was one of thevery first railways in the world and the firststeam hauled railway in Cornwall. It wasprimarily intended to carry freight – sand, mud and coal out of the town and granite, tin and copper in. The local landowner, SirWilliam Molesworth of Pencarrow, was thedriving force behind the railway and thepurpose of the line was to carry limey seasand from Wadebridge up the valley of theRiver Camel where it was much in demandas manure.

The town became a railway junction in June1895, when the North Cornwall line wasopened, which linked Wadebridge withplaces such as Camelford, Launceston andOkehampton. The second part of the route,
