Article by Kenzie Confer
Congratulations to the Waccamaw Windtalkers as they had
three competitors, Jamie NcNair, Amani Huell, and Kenzie
Confer, qualify for the National Individual Events Tourna-
ment of Champions (NIETOC). Juniors Huell and Confer,
accompanied by Coach Ree Lawson, flew to Minnesota on
May 8th, and will compete through Sunday afternoon. Huell
received her acceptance to the tournament as a Competi-
tor at Large by placing in the top percentage of competitors
in Dramatic Interpretation across this season. Confer also
qualified as a Competitor at Large in Original Oratory.
Senior Jamie McNair qualified for NIETOC by receiving
two bids and placing within the top three in Humorous
Interpretation; however, McNair opted not to compete. This
is the 5th year that Waccamaw has had a speech team and
the first time they have had competitors qualify for
Nationals! Good luck and safe travels this weekend.

Herndon’s coffee house By Hannah Wolf, Pictures courtesy of Dr. Herndon
Dr. Herndon hosted a class “coffee house” for her English IV classes on Tuesday,
May 6th. Students reenacted gatherings from the Enlightenment Era in which
people would gather together to discuss important topics and issues that were
happening all around them; students created their own pamphlets to pass around
their class. Topics ranged from student loans to gay rights to bullying. The event
was an overall success and the students enjoyed the coffee, cookies, and tea
brought in by Dr. Herndon as well.
By Hannah Wolf
Mrs. Aguilar’s Spanish classes celebrated Cinco de
Mayo on Monday, May 5th. Students brought in
various foods including: tortilla chips, queso dip,
salsa, and the ingredients for fried ice cream. While
enjoying their snacks, the classes each watched a
video on the history of Cinco de Mayo. Cinco de
Mayo is a day for Mexican-American citizens to
celebrate their heritage and the winning of the
Battle of Puebla against the French forces in 1862.
Students enjoyed the opportunity to spend an
entire class period relaxing and learning about the
holiday.
The Bands of Waccamaw had their
annual BBQ fundraiser this past
Friday. Lots of people bought plates for
either lunch or dinner. The fundraiser
was a success.!>

Article by Ms. Warr, Choral Director
Pictures by Emma Karst
The Waccamaw High School Chorus presented their
Spring Concert on Tuesday evening, May 6th, with a
wonderful theme for the year, “Seasons of Love and
Peace.” Many comments were made about the beauti-
ful performance of the National Anthem at the opening
of the concert. In the first part of the concert, Come to
the Music by Joseph Martin was presented, with a beautiful piccolo accompaniment by Asaiah Brown and a stunning percussion
display by a Waccamaw professional percussionist, Mr. Bates Holman. Holman provided a wonderful background of percussion
throughout the concert. Also featured in the
early part of the concert was two of our finest
freshmen vocalists, Mac Atkinson and
Sydney Windham, both singing exquisite
pieces keeping the theme of love strong. The
other student representing the sophomore
class was Heaven Bowers; the junior class:
Ashlyn DeLoach; and our senior class:
Alexandra Hight and Will Ness. Alex
entertained the audience with a classic
Beatles tune, Yesterday, and Will brought an original piece and community
favorite, First L-O-V-E to the stage. Each of the senior members of the Waccamaw
Chorus was honored with a senior gift and we are so thankful for their contributions
to the music and performances at WHS.
Once again, Ian Kelley’s film
presentation of “Being Human” was
shared as a support to the theme of
peace as the chorus moved into the second half of
the concert with Vijay Singh’s Just and Lasting
Piece. This powerful piece was introduced by a
reading about the text, setting Abraham Lincoln’s
Second Inaugural Address by Kenzie Confer. The
accompaniment featured
cellist, Nathan Gates, also a
youth from the Georgetown
area. The even-
ing closed with
a tribute to the
Beatles, with
All You Need is Love,
featuring Will Ness and
Ariana Senn as soloists
and lastly, the chorus
turned up the energy with
Seasons of Love from the musical Rent. Seniors came to the forefront,
leading their chorus in movement and clapping on this charged, closing
piece. The entire evening radiated the cry for love, peace and the right
to dream beyond all limits. Congratulations, Waccamaw Chorus, for your great performance and for your untiring effort to bring the gift
of music to our school and community.
