WA State Vaccine Preventable Diseases before School Attendance Requirements

description

Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD's) were very well controlled in Washington State long before the implementation of School Attendance Requirements in 1980. These Washington State Department of Health documents show that Measles mortality had fallen to 1 every 5 years from 1967 onward, 13 years before School Attendance Requirements and with vaccination coverage rates 30% to 40% lower than the current rates. The other VPD's were equally low. The idea that the 2.6% to 3.2% Non-Medical Exemption rate for vaccines in Washington State pose any threat to is unreasonable.

The 90% plus coverage rates we seetoday were first achieved in the

late 90's, and are the result of theconvergence of 3 programs-

1) School attendance requirements, which began inthe late 70's & early 80's;

2) The near complete indemnification for liability ofvaccine manufacturers and administrators by theNVICP, The National Vaccine Injury Compensationprogram in 1988; and

3) VFC- Vaccines For Children, a funding schemewhereby the government buys and provides all"required" vaccines, 1993.

Required vaccines are nowlegislated purchases.

There was never a "Golden Age", in the past when Va ccine Acceptance and Vaccination rates werehigher than they are today. The truth is there are more US children getting

more vaccines for more infections at younger ages t han ever in history!
