Alice Johnson Alice I. Johnson, 96, Peli- can Rapids, MN, formerly of Freeman, SD, passed from this mortal existence into eternal peace on December 23, 2013 at the Pelican Valley Health Care Center in Peli- can Rapids. Known and loved throughout her extended family as Grandma J, Alice was born on August 7, 1917 in Denhoff, ND to the late Emmanuel and Dorothy (Edinger) Engel. She gradu- ated from Denhoff High School. Alice then married Merlin Johnson July 27, 1941 in Goodrich, ND and moved with him to Freeman, SD where they lived on the fam- ily farm until his death in 1963. She then moved to Yankton, SD where she began a 20-year career as a house mother at Yankton College, developing many en- during relationships with the students she mentored there. On September 2010, Alice entered into the Peli- can Valley Health Center. Alice was a committed Lutheran and endlessly in- dustrious. When not actively involved in any number of cleaning, cooking and craft projects, she was likely en- gaged in a combination of embroidery, reading, sewing, jigsaw puzzles, crosswords and music. She is survived by two daughters, Carol (Doug) Lay, Suamico, WI; and Judi Hoadley, Pelican Rapids, MN; and by her daughter-in-law, Sharon Johnson, Shawnee, OK. She is further survived by her grandchildren, Scott (Lisa) Johnson, Galeton, CO; Brian Lay, DePere, WI; Craig Johnson, Casper, WY; Matthew Johnson, Tecum- seh, OK; Carrie McCoy, Tecumseh, OK; Elizabeth Hoadley, Pelican Rapids, MN; Jason Hoadley (fiancé Anissa), Deer Park, TX; and Jesse (Emily) Hoadley, Peli- can Rapids, MN. Several gen- erations of grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Decem- ber 31, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Yankton, with Rev. David Wildermuth officiating. Burial will be in the Yankton Cemetery. Doreen’s pallbearers will be her grandchildren. Doreen was born in Mitchell, SD on June 14, 1927 to David and Genevieve (Murphy) Ny- mark. She lived in Mitchell until her Grand- mother died at which time she moved to Yankton, SD. Due to her folks living at the State Hos- pital, they were not allowed to have children living with them so she lived with Harry and Agnes Sparby. During her years in high school, she worked at the state hospital in the dining area as hostess. During the summer months, she would work in the office doing in- ventory work at HSC. She graduated from Yankton High School and then met and married Lawrence Pechan on June 15, 1946. She continued to work at HSC until the first of her three children was born. In 1971, she began working at Gurney’s Seed and Nursery where she worked for the next 38 years before retir- ing. After her official retire- ment, she continued at Gurney’s working in cus- tomer service and as night watchman. Doreen was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Yankton, where she was a member of several circles and served as past Sunday School Superintend- ent. Her hobbies included knitting, crocheting, playing bingo, reading, and watch- ing old-time movies. Doreen was preceded in death by her husband, par- ents, and one daughter Deb- bie. She is survived by two daughters; Susan Pechan and Jeanette Pechan, both of Yankton, SD; Grandchil- dren: Jess and Sarah Tramp of Mission Hill, SD, Clay and Rachel Stoddard of Yank- ton, SD, and Rebecca Tramp of Yankton, SD; Great Grandchildren; Riley, Kay- dence, Kenzy, Reese, Remi, Jacob, Gabrielle, and Joce- lyn. Norman was born, grew up and lived his entire life on the farm that he loved. He spent his life doing what he loved best — farming the land and raising Hereford cattle. It is there that he died sud- denly on Thursday, Decem- ber 26, 2013, having achieved the age of 83 years, 8 months and 13 days. Johnson A Lincoln Revolution On Friday, Dec. 13, the Lincoln Elementary gym was trans- formed into a Revolutionary War Wax Museum by the fifth grade students in Mrs. Jensen’s social studies class. The students became “wax mannequins” in scenes such as the Boston Tea Party and Thomas Jefferson writing the Declaration of Independence, along with 10 other scenes. This was a great way for the students to share with their parents and the rest of the Lin- coln Student Body what they have learned about our country gaining independence from Great Britain. History came to life that day at Lincoln Elemen- tary, or rather came to wax, for a learning experience hopefully they will not forget soon. (Sub- mitted photo) Sobriety Checkpoints Planned In January PIERRE — The South Dakota Highway Patrol has sobriety checkpoints scheduled in January in the following counties: Beadle, Brookings, Brown, Brule, Clay, Codington, Davison, Day, Jackson, Minnehaha, Moody, Roberts, Spink and Stanley. Scorpion Submarine Anniversary Is Jan. 5 What does the city of Yankton have in common with a sub- marine that was lost at sea during World War II? Jan. 5, 2014, will mark the 70th anniversary of the sinking of the submarine, USS Scorpion, SS-278. The last reported contact with the Scorpion was Jan. 5, 1944; it was never heard from again and was declared lost at sea 60 days later by the U. S. Navy. The Scorpion and all of the 77-man crew were never heard from again. Scorpion was one of 50 sub- marines lost before or during World War II. During that war, the submarine service lost more than 3300 officers and enlisted men. The South Dakota Submarine Memorial is located in Yankton at the north end of the Meridian Bridge. The memorial was erected through the efforts of the World War II submarine veter- ans in the Yankton area, it was dedicated in 2002. A formal memorial service will be conducted at the memorial site on May 17, 2014, as part of the Armed Forces Day activities. The memorial service will honor all submarines and sailors lost at sea.

Scorpion Submarine Anniversary Is Jan. 5What does the city of Yankton have in common with a sub-

marine that was lost at sea during World War II?Jan. 5, 2014, will mark the 70th anniversary of the sinking of

the submarine, USS Scorpion, SS-278.The last reported contact with the Scorpion was Jan. 5, 1944;

it was never heard from again and was declared lost at sea 60days later by the U. S. Navy. The Scorpion and all of the 77-mancrew were never heard from again. Scorpion was one of 50 sub-marines lost before or during World War II. During that war, thesubmarine service lost more than 3300 officers and enlistedmen.

The South Dakota Submarine Memorial is located in Yanktonat the north end of the Meridian Bridge. The memorial waserected through the efforts of the World War II submarine veter-ans in the Yankton area, it was dedicated in 2002.

A formal memorial service will be conducted at the memorialsite on May 17, 2014, as part of the Armed Forces Day activities.The memorial service will honor all submarines and sailors lostat sea.
