MAIN STREET On land bought in 1766 with pounds and shillings of Virginia currency, the Holding Homeplace was built by Revolutionary War soldier Matthew Holding prior to 1805, when cut nails were used in later additions to the central hall, which has hand-forged nails. One of the family patriarchs, Willis Holding, lived in the house with his six sons, all of whom attended Wake Forest College and contributed to the town in various professions. The home has remained in the Holding family for seven generations. Holding descendant, David Smoot and his wife Jeanne are the current residents. Stone Chapel (1940) 701 S. MAIN STREET This Romanesque Revival-style stone sanctuary was originally built for the St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in 1940. It was designed by Florida architect Frank Frimmer. The building was sold by the diocese in 1996 and was most recently purchased by the Wake Forest Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in 2013. Downtown Loft (ca. 1932) 141 S. WHITE STREET The building at 139-143 S. White Street was B & S Department Store beginning in 1932. The apartment over 139 S. White Street was originally used as a stock room and storage for the department store. In later years, it was used as a lending library, photography studio, beauty shop, and apartment. Forestville Baptist Church & Cemetery (1860) 1350 S. MAIN STREET The Forestville Baptist Church, built in 1860, is one of the best-preserved antebellum churches in the county. It combines mid-19th century Greek Revival temple form with the eclectic Italianate style – a blend associated with the work of Warrenton contractor, Jack W. Holt. ● Dr. Benjamin Powers House (ca. 1893)112 W. NORTH AVENUE

This house and the adjacent store were built by Dr. Benjamin Powers. The Italianate-style house is a well-preserved example of the style both exterior and interior. The store was built a few years later and is currently under rehabilitation. The current stewards of the property are Debbie and Marty Ludas.

● George W. Paschal House (1908)340 DURHAM ROAD

OPEN 1-5 PM ONLY Longtime professor of the classics, George W. Paschal built this house in 1908. The transitional Queen Anne/Colonial Revival-style house is built of rusticated concrete block and is the only example in town of this type of construction. Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary purchased the home in 2015 and completed the rehabilitation. Kimberly and Ryan Hutchinson are caring for the home.

● Dr. Forrest Clonts House (1940)334 WOODLAND DRIVE

History Professor, Forrest Clonts built this house in 1940. The two-story, brick Colonial Revival-style house has only had four owners. The current owner, Greg Parsons, has taken great care with maintaining original interior and exterior features of the home.

● Dr. Ora C. Bradbury House (1939)522 S . WINGATE

Dr. Ora C. Bradbury, a biology professor at Wake Forest College built this house in 1939. The brick, Colonial Revival-style house has two front wall dormers and recessed entrance with transom, paneled reveal, and pilastered surround. The house is currently owned and cared for by Elizabeth and Greg Williams.

● South Brick House Outbuildings (1838-1890) 112 E . SOUTH AVENUE (Enter from S. Main Street)

The outbuildings behind the South Brick House are the most intact collection of historic outbuildings in the Wake Forest Historic District. There are four outbuildings: an old kitchen and smokehouse built around 1855, carriage house/barn built around 1890, and a servants’ quarters built at the same time as the house around 1838. Alexis and Jim Cooke are the current owners.

● Hollowell House (1935) 548 S . MAIN STREET

This house was built around 1935 by local grocer, Jesse Hollowell and his wife, Helen. It is a Tudor cottage with stylistic features including the front gable with recessed corner porch and arched bays. The house is currently owned by Aileen Staples.

● Glen Royal Baptist Church (ca. 1905)731 ELIZABETH STREET

Located in the Glen Royall Mill Village National Register Historic District, the congregation was organized in 1901 and met in the nearby commissary building until 1905 when the church was built. The brick veneer was added around 1946. The building has a Colonial Revival-style entry and tower with Gothic revival lancet windows.

● Grady S. Patterson House (1928)605 N. MAIN STREET

Mr. and Mrs. Grady S. Patterson built this Craftsman Bungalow-style house. It is said to be a Sears kit house. Patterson was the registrar at the college and lived here until the 1950s. The current owners, Karin and Ethan Drum, completely rehabilitated the house when they purchased it in 2014.

● Hubert Poteat, Sr. House (1925-1928)545 N. MAIN STREET

Musician and Latin Scholar, Hubert Poteat built this home in the Georgian Revival style. Hubert was the son of William Poteat (former) President of Wake Forest College. An architect named Morgan from Marion, NC is thought to have designed the house. Lisa Roberson and David Goco purchased the historic home earlier this year.

● S.W. Brewer, Sr. House (ca. 1905)421 N. MAIN STREET

A builder named Davis is said to have built this Queen Anne-style house for S.W. Brewer, Sr., possibly for his daughter. The two-story house underwent a large renovation in 2007. The current owners, Lindsay Zanno and Terry Gates, have been great stewards of the property. They have integrated period fixtures, tiles, and antiques in the interior.

● Calvin Jones House – Wake Forest Historical Museum (ca. 1820)414 N. MAIN STREET

Federal-style farmhouse built by Calvin Jones whose land became Wake Forest College. The house was moved a short distance to accommodate the construction of Stealy Hall. In the 1930s it was moved again to Wingate Street and finally moved to the current location in 1956 and restored in the 1960s by the Wake Forest College Birthplace Society.
