UMPIRE'S CORNE RMany Clubs have inquired about

the new method, operative from thisseason, of umpires gradings .

Umpires have been selected intofour groups, namely :

Group 1 8 Umpires - 5 to officiateat "A" Section fixtures, 1 - B Sec-tion 1- C Section and 1 emergency .

Group 2 10 Umpires "B" and "C"Sections .

Group 3 23 Umpires "D", "C", "E"and Junior Sections .

Group 4 31 Ump ires - ReserveSections .

These groupings will be reviewedfortnightly by the Umpire Committee,so umpires cannot afford to be com-placent in any group .

Training is conducted at Elstern -wick two nights weekly, so we donot anticipate any complaints fromclubs about umpires not being physic-ally fit.

'Coaching classes, which have beenheld weekly since early March, shouldassure consistency in interpretationsby all umpires from week to week.

BALL BRIEFSSt. Kilda CBOC Juniors gave Ivan-

hoe a terrific shock last week in theiegame, indicating to other juniorteams that they are no pushover .With "Monkey" Clinch doing a "Hud-son" touch, and being backed up wellby Peter Fields , Vince Cazzaro and"Hook" Lynch St . Kilda showed theyare not far from a win .

Once again, bad kicking was thedisappointing element in North OldBoys game against Old Scotch. It wasdisappointing to see the efforts offirst year players, Kevin Power, SteveMaule, Noel Robertson and Pat Fen-nelly thwarted in front of the bigsticks, but with these players as afoundation, future prospects lookbright .

Monash Highlights - Courageousteam effort to hold Collegians in thefinal quarter when Monash werekicking against the wind.

- Jeff Thomas' 5 fine goals .- Andy Sladen's magnificent mark-

ing at full back .- Stuart Galbraith's good ruck-

work and marking .- Chris Cole's fine forward play .- Brian McMaster's consistent

good play over 4 quarters .Good to see Barry McConnell and

Ron Curwood back in Footscray's-line-up . Barry because of businessreasons has been unable to take thefield for a couple of seasonc, but his3 valuable goals showed he is still aforce to be reckoned with, Ron, re-covering from a bad leg injury, turn-ed in a great first game with the re-serves last week. Many more gameslike last week's Ron and the seniorswon't be far away.

Bruce "Porky" Niemann played agreat first up game for O.M.'s with anintelligent display of ruck work . Pete"Stumps" Roberson kicked a bagfullfrom his flank and Gary "Okka" Aus-tin shut out his opponent with a bril-liant display of marking . Others to

do well were Bruce A'Beckett, Pete"Contacts" Woodbridge and "Rosco"Stansfield-Smith.

No-one is quite sure how it happen-ed but John "Perce" MeArdle hasgone "over the hill". Still, all at St .Kevins Old Boys wish Barbara andJohn all the best on the occasion oftheir engagement . Perce has playedover a hundred games with the cluband has now joined the growing listof engaged and married players.

AMP Reserves put up a creditableperformance to win by ten goals afterthe desperation move of bringing"Sewelli" and "Frog" out of retire-ment to make up the twenty. All thereplacements performed well and aresure to make it hard for the regularsto step back into the side. "Rex" Sax-by showed a welcome return to formby potting four and "Tru-Boot" Blossgot his regular five, Col Littlejohngets a special mention for a sounddisplay at full-back and "Big" Hillcame under notice .

Old Brighton looks to be losing twoof their all time greats . "Fatty"Bruce McBriar and Tony "Bones"Bond both announced their retire-ments last Satu :day and are headingoff for England soon. Whether OldBrighton can cover the loss is dubiousbut best of luck to both the boys .

New Ivanhoe junior player RonPayne didn't let seven stitches over hiseye the previous week interfere witha dashing performance against St . Kil-da C .B .O .C . 'Coach Don Blackwood al-so had reason to be pleased with theform of Graeme Botterill and "Chips"O'Rafferty, who cracked the 50 gamebarrier in great style.

Good players were hard to find forOrmond last week . Jeff Russ, "Lumpy"Moran, Terry Crumpton and "Mel"Bourne great triers . "Wood Long"with six goals also did his bit .

Ball Briefs - continuedNew boy, Barry Masonhelder, UHS

Old Boys half-forward flanker/ruck-man, again played a major part inthe side's win last week. Barry whoappears to just amble around theground, has the happy knack of pop-ping up at the right time and place, when he gets the ball he kicks it 70yards . His goal in the second quart-er last week was a gem .

Parkside selectors were rewardedby a great game from Bobby Fletcherby shifting him from the wing, wherehe had been playing well in previousweeks, to the roving position. How-ever, the selectors in the wisdom ofthis move discovered another solidcentre-line player in Peter Harvey.Parkside have been winning duels onthis line with Ron "Yah Yah" Mooreand Russ Fitzgerald playing well eachmatch . Now if only the rucks androvers . apart from Kevin Clarke and"Fletch", can earn kicks Parkside willbe in business, (ex-coach G~orgE"Sago" Rice quote) .

Assumption reserves are still im-proving. They put together threegood auarters and one hard fought, but score-wise not so fruitful, one.Lindsay "Silver Tongue" Howardwould put Tom Hafey to shame .Fancy giving a blast to a backlinethat allowed only four goals throughin four quarters . Highlights includedgreat opening games by Des Jamesand Russell Grigg new found sharp-shooters in Carlo Furletti and Bern ie`Bugsie" Joyce, and a great gamefrom Terry Fitz who after the match, demanded the Acauila Shies . Anotherhighlight, off the -field, was the Doc-tor Zhivago look affected by the onewho loves to see his name in printand ain't gonna get it (this weekanyway) .

Old Ivanhoe supporters received abig lift last week with two good winsover A.N.Z . . Newcomer Bob Boal

turned in a great first up game in theReserves and should soon gain aguernsey in the main game .

Congratulations to Andy Melin andGraham Craven of Caulfield Gram-marians on the recent announce-ment of their respective engagementsto Jill Boston and Pat Kendall.New Parkside trainer "Bill" Collins isgoing to make the call, his selectionis top weight who is also a "Winna" .How did you enjoy that one Joe, youneed to jog, or should I say "Silva" .

The OM's Reserves has a goodblending of experience and youth andshould have a good season . DaveRussell, Dave Hepworth, Pete Mur-phy and "Dasa" Cox were the exper-ienced players to do well while newcomers Tim Moore and John Vercoeput in very creditable performances .

Three well-timed goals by Mel-bcurne High's Ian WiIson (from atap-down by star full-forward NeilMalone), long kicks by Henry Ritter-man and captain John, Cooper in twominutes sealed the fate of De La Sallelast Satu :day .

George Howard, CommonwealthBank Reserves full back shone lastSaturday when he came up againstan opponent slower than himselfMercy !

"Too close for comfort", that wasthe way everybody described OldCamberwell Reserves win over OldMentonians last week . With ten se;.-onds to siren time Darrell Gretgrixmarked thirty yards out and steeredthrough the winning goal . One of themost relieved people to hear the sirenthen was team manager "Pussy" Bal-lard. "Pussy" had nearly run ontothe ground himself to help score thatlast goal. Players who showed outin the game were "Pancho" Vincent,Ian Barratt, John Murphy and JohnnyWood .

Ball Briefs - continuedFull back and former captain-coach

Andrew "Nooks" Gee played his 50thsenior game with La Trobe last week.and got in the best players. High-lights : Gee's brilliant dash from fullback to pass to Sceney, who goaled ."Shag" Anyon's "90 yard" goal in 3rdquarter .

What can you say about Ray Barton?Yet another day where "Bart's" wasin the right place at the right timeand cleared with style . David Tiddwas his brilliant best but Glenhuntlywants 18 men concentrating for 100minutes for those 4 points .

The recent National Service intakeouttook Alphington's tallest follower,Glenn Candy. He also came in handyfor the occasional mark around theground . We hope to see him againlater on in the season and wish himwell in the interim (if there is such aunit) .

Congratulations to National BankCommittee-man Barry Duff and hiswife Judy on the arrival of a littlerover . Welcome to Adelaide boysBob Evans and Alan Wilson who havesigned with Bankers, more supportfor old "Croweaters" Captain BobLloyd and President Max Mueller.Transfer fees? No worries .

Congratulations to Don Elmer OldTrinity Reserves full forward whocelebrated his 100th game with theclub with an excellent display of posi-tion play to finish with seven goals, his achievement was a great factor inthe team's win over Old Brighton .

Footscray Tech's back pocket play-er Brian Park continued his form oftwo previous games by turning in agreat game against St . Bernard's .Brian's unorthdox kicking is a featureof his game, . He also has uncannyanticipation with brother Bert on th ewing .

Page 22

When a player gets forty kicks ia game (including seventeen in onquarter) he deserves an extra spceiepat. Congratulations "Bones" onmagnificent effort for AMP last weelWe"ll settle for about thirty thiweek pal . . Max Formby proved hiTrinity form all wrong by collectin ;five and "The Prong" turned in a trfmendous effort in taking twent, marks and used intelligent hand-ba]to his team-mates - Taylor and Mur.ro were effective and Ahern an'Mouse' were very strong around thground. The A.M .P. injury list grevwhen Gerry McHugh argued with thfence and ended up in hospital ; whope things are not as serious as the, appeared .

Joe "Pastor Doug" Nicholls hadfriend in the umpire on Saturday foOld Brighton . Joe was awarded 1 :free kicks and as well took his firsoverhead mark. Things are certainl :looking up .

Ivanhoe's well groomed vice captain Dave "Solid" Berry was disappointed that the 'Hoes, couldn't celebrate his 150th game last week witla win. Not to worry Dave, o

n you get those 90-yard drop kick :back on target, we will be in business . In the meantime "Quincy" i :filling in adequately in the long kicking (and long hair) department .

Old Carey welcomes Greg Tucke, back to the Club after the sojouriwith army .

UHS Old Boys half-back flankeiBarry Parks has started the seasorin great form. Last week his strongclearing dashes and timely mark :stopped many attacks and togethexwith Paul Bain (back-pocket) an(Wayne Taylor (half-back flank) helcthe back line tight to help win a closegame .
