Cathedral Book Shop: Water and Spirit We’re entering the season of irises and peonies and Pentecost, the ‘long green season’ of the Church year, during which our lectionary explores life after the Ascension of Jesus and considers what it might mean to be “born of water and Spirit.” is Sunday we celebrate the feast of the Holy Trinity, a mystery if there ever was one; weekly we proclaim our belief in “Father, Son and Holy Spirit,” but most of us would have some difficulty explaining in our own words just how God operates! Yet, beyond words, we do have ways of understanding such things, and one of them is the act of Holy Baptism, in which we are symbolically washed, ‘”sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked as Christ’s own forever” – an action that speaks louder than words. Many Christians, especially in the Eastern Orthodox tradition, have contemplated the mystery of the Trinity as depicted in icons. One of the best known was created in the 15th century by Andrei Rublev, who depicted the three angels that visited Abraham as an allegory for Father, Son and Spirit, and who inspired many subsequent depictions of this theme in icon form and in written meditations. Our participation in liturgical actions such as Baptism and Eucharist, and our openness to the gifts of silent contemplation, affirm that knowledge of God (in all God’s persons) often comes from sources beyond words, just as poetry and art can convey truth beyond scientific description. So if you are preparing to “welcome the newly baptized,” the Book Shop can help with a greeting card or Book of Common Prayer or a small gift; and if your Pentecost season is taking a contemplative turn, we offer a large selection of icons. But that’s only the beginning: however you’re traveling your spiritual journey, or sharing in someone else’s, we have many treasures to assist you; come and see… WX2015 - Why Christian?: Saint Mark’s Cathedral, September 18th and 19th is fall, St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral will host the Why Christian? conference, which brings together ‘a group of storytellers who make us want to be Christians.’ rough both large and small group sharing, participants will explore the content and practice of Christian faith in the 21st century. Due to his unemployment and the fact that there is no woman in the house to care for the children, the Irish courts put the Doyle children into Church-run orphanages. Although a sympathetic judge assures Desmond that he’ll get his children back after he gets a job, he learns there’s another barrier. A barmaid, her brother, her suitor, and a tippling footballer become Desmond’s team. Pierce Brosnan and Julianna Margulies lead this fantastic film. Facilitated discussion follows the film.
