(
objective|
Hindu cosmology is based on a cyclical idea of time. This meansthat
worlds and new bodiesare continually being recreated so that the atman
can continueits journey to moksha. Hindussee the universe as one of
many bubblesin space. Thereis no one universeor one act of creation.
Creation is a continuous Process.
Consider how Hindustories
have been usedto explain
the origin of the universe and
howthis teaching relates to
scientific theories.
Stories from Hindutradition
Here is a Hindu story about the origin of the world.
Long, long ago, Lord Vishnu created the different
universesand in each universe he lay down ona
celestial cobra snake in an ocean of milk. A pure
white lotus flower came from his navel and, fast
asleep,insideits satin petals,lay Lord Brahma,the
creator, the source of all things.

m Stewardship and dominion
There are two contrasting religious ideas about howthe natural world
shouldbetreated:
humans have been given special responsibility
to protect and care for the earth. Since the earth belongs to God,it is only
‘on loam’ to humans. Therefore, its resources are for them to use, but they
mustuse only whatthey need for survival, and they must never abuse
thesegifts. The duty ofhumansis to care for the earth on behalf of God so
that future generations can enjoy it as well. Some religious people believe
that theywill be judged whenthey die onhowwell they have looked after
the earth. Hindusbelieve that they have a duty to look after the natural
worldin orderto attain good karmaandeventually reach moksha.

Haveyouever been amazed at how manystars can be seen ona
cloudless night? The size of the universe is astonishing. Our galaxy,
the Milky Way, is about 100,000 light years in diameter. It would take
roughly 2.5 million years to travel to the next galaxy,if travelling at the
speedoflight. The currently observable universe is about 93 billion
light years in diameter and contains
more than 100billion galaxies.
Doesthe universe go on forever?
Wedo not know the answer. How
did the universe come into being?
Wasthere a time when nothing
existed? How did nothing become
something?
Christians believe that the universe
didn’t just makeitself, but thatit
was designed and made by God.
They believe that God createdall
things that exist ex nihilo —a Latin
term meaning ‘out of nothing’.
Genesis 1:1 — 2:3 gives one of the
accountsin the Bible of how God
created the universe. In thestory,
God created the heavens and the
earth in six days and then rested
on the seventh.
Godsaid,‘Let there be light.’ He called the ‘light’ day and the
darkness night.

ele The value of the world
w Howvaluableis the world?
Addupthevalueofall the gold, diamonds, preciousstones, natural
resources, food produced by agriculture and industrial outputin the world
and it would be a mammothtotal. But is that alone the value of the world?
No,of course not. We cannotput a price onits valueasit is our home, and
provides and sustainslife. As far as we know, nowhereelse in our solar
system can sustainlife like planet Earth. Christians regard the world as a
priceless gift from God, loaned to humansas a result of his love.

The world has the ‘wow’factor
Theview from a high mountain, the Grand Canyon,NiagaraFalls, the

of creation. Such beauty gives a sense of amazement, awe and wonder.
