“He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a de-
serted place and rest a while.” MARK 6:31
Do you spend time, every day, alone and in silence listen-
ing to how God is calling you? If not, you are missing out
on a wonderful opportunity to develop a more personal
relationship with Him. Unless we talk and more im-
portantly, listen to God every day, how else will we know
how He is calling us? Consider making a retreat this year,
spend some “alone” time with God.

Looking for a fun and easy way to help your
parish? The St. Justin Martyr Greeter and
Usher ministry could use your help. The
smiling face of a greeter or usher is among
one of the first faces a parishioner or visitor
sees when entering the Church, and has an impact. It is a
great way to get to know more people of the parish. You
may offer your services at the Mass you usually attend.
We hope to have enough ushers to form two teams for
(most) Masses, then be on duty only alternating months.
If not able to serve regularly, we also maintain a staff of
substitutes to fill in when an usher requests. If interested,
or would like more info, contact Mike Koehler at 314-821-
1871, or email [email protected].
Parish Library
New books have been accumulat-
ing in the library holdover (aka the
librarian’s casa) during the pan-
demic shutdown, so we’re anxious
to get them out in the library.
Look for these biographies and
other new additions on our “New
Additions” shelf:
BERNADETTE SPEAKS—A Life
of Saint Bernadette Soubirous in
Her Own Words
SAINT EDITH STEIN—A Spiritual Portrait
WOMEN SAINTS—Lives of Faith and Courage Forty
women saints who may be familiar and many who aren’t.
Just a note, please return all library materials to the YEL-
LOW BASKET on the shelf so they can be sanitized before
they’re put back in circulation. Thank you.
Dynamic Catholic, Alive!—the Word
Many of us have heard the jokes that Catholics don’t
read the Bible. While it is true that the sacramental life
of the Catholic Church is wonderful and surpasses the
power of Scripture alone, it is imperative for us to read
and pray with Scripture. Jesus, the Word made flesh,
reminds us in His words to the disciples how important
it is to hear the Word of God, to meditate on it, and to
implement its truths into our daily lives. He reminds us
of the necessity to be rooted in it and to allow it to be-
come the wellspring from which all of our thoughts,
words, and actions flow. We should read Scripture every
single day of our lives, whether that means going to daily
Mass and listening to the readings, praying lectio divina,
or praying a daily Bible verse on one of the various apps.
St. Jerome once said that ignorance of Scripture is igno-
rance of Christ. We come to a fuller knowledge and rela-
tionship with the Lord when we read the Scriptures.

hank you for your continued support of our parish family.
Just a heads up for all those parishioners who need to receive the low
gluten hosts, I realized once we made the change to THREE lines for com-
munion, I would need to have THREE pixes with those hosts in them. So,
two weeks late, every line for communion now has that option available
to you. Thank you for your patience as we continue to iron out all the
details of Mass in the time of Covid...
-----
I found out last Friday (7/9) that I was exposed to someone who had an
active case of Covid. I was surprised to find that out, as they were in the
over 65, at risk group, and I just presumed they had been vaccinated.
They were not. Thus, what should have been a somewhat quiet after-
noon was taken up at the Urgent Care center, being tested, so that I
would know if it would be safe for you to have me be the celebrant at the weekend Masses. Fortunately, I tested neg-
ative.
I bring this up because I (and other pundits) believe that we are at a different, and somewhat awkward stage in the
pandemic. We know that the vaccines work, and that they work at a near miraculous rate. (98-99% is a crazy level of
effectiveness for any medication, much less a vaccine.) We also know that not everyone has been vaccinated, some
because they cannot be and some because they will not be. And that the delta variant of the virus is much more con-
tagious than the original corona virus strain (and that one was pretty dang contagious in itself) and that it is the pre-
dominant strain found in the new cases in Missouri (and the U.S.).
Add to that mix that people are tired of the pandemic. It has been politicized by both parties and used as driver for
all kinds of political ends and agendas to tragic results on both sides of the aisle. One of my good friends is an ER
room doctor at Boone Hospital in Columbia, MO, and she is worried, less for herself now she is vaccinated, but more
for the patients she sees ever more frequently. The ‘long haul’ symptoms for people who have recovered from even
slight cases of Covid are beginning to be problematic in her practice. “It is not a nice disease to catch, even if it is a
mild case” she says simply. “And for those that get the full blown case... it is downright nasty.”
No one wants to go back to the lockdowns of last year. I get that. I love NOT having to wear my mask as I preside at
the altar. And yet...I will do it in a heartbeat if that is what it takes to keep people safe. A parishioner sent a picture of
a button being worn inside of a church in Indiana which read: “I am fully vaccinated. I wear a mask as a charitable way
to protect the vulnerable and to care for the common good.”
That message resonates with me. That is why you have seen me and will continue to see me wearing a mask in the
gathering space in the back of church and as I process down the aisle. I understand that as a vaccinated person, I am
at lower risk for getting the virus and passing it on. But it is not a zero risk. And I am ‘exposed’ to a lot of people in
the course of a week’s time – between hospital visits, Masses and people dropping in to the rectory. I don’t know eve-
ry one’s status. Nor do I ask. So, to protect others, to keep the risk of me being an unwitting transmitter of the virus
to others, I will continue to wear the mask, doing my part to keep people as safe as I can.
The USCCB issued this comment back in January. It remains true today.
“Receiving the COVID-19 vaccine ought to be understood as an act of charity toward the other members of our community,"
they said. "In this way, being vaccinated safely against COVID-19 should be considered an act of love of our neighbor and
part of our moral responsibility for the common good.”
Charity to protect the vulnerable and to care for the common good sometimes is as simple as wearing a mask in-
doors or getting a vaccine when available. Please do your part as we struggle here in Missouri to keep this pandemic
under control.

Garden Team
Some parishioners have asked about the tall purple flow-
ers in the corner garden across from the front entrance
of church. We are passing on this interesting bit of in-
fo. This perennial is called Lythrum and a web search
indicated they are invasive and not to be sold or planted
in the state of Missouri. The gardeners met this past
week to trim, deadhead, weed and water. Questions
about the Garden Team, call Laura at 729-7360.
Needles and Knots
Stop in the Rectory basement Monday evening 7-9(ring
the doorbell at the basement level) or Thursday 10-2 if
you need a unique gift to welcome a new arrival. We
have several baby quilts available for purchase. Pro-
ceeds from sales are given to the parish. For more info
