Lesson Time

Your child is learning:•To tell what is the same and what is different about

two things•That it’s okay if people have different feelings about

the same thing

Understanding that people may have different feelings about the same thing helps your child get along with others.

Play Time

Play a game with your child. Practice comparing your feelings and your child’s feelings about the same event. Use events such as bedtime, tooth-brushing time, snack time, clean-up time, and story time.

Say: We’re going to play Do We Feel Different or the Same? We’re going to pretend that it’s time for . Tell me how you feel about it. Then I will tell you how I feel about it. Then ask: Do we feel the same or different?

Story Time

This week’s story is about Marisa and Shontal. They are having different feelings about riding a bike. Ask your child about this story.• What do you see in this photo?• How is Shontal feeling? (Happy.) How can you tell? (By her body. By the look on her face.)• How is Marisa feeling? (Afraid.) How can you tell? (By her body. By the look on her face.)

Now let’s find things about us that are the same or different. Look at the following with your child: eyes, hair, clothing, height, and so on.

Math Using objects from around the house, create a few groups of similar items (e.g., pencils, spoons, socks, etc.) make a game of grouping similar items and then determine which groups have the same number of items).

Math Using items around the house, encourage the child to copy or create a simple pattern (think: A-B-A-B). As they get comfortable making a simple pattern, get creative with fun items. Consider using different sized utensils, different kinds of writing tools, fruits, socks, pillows, etc.

Math Walk around your house and count how many red things you can find. Then, count how many blue things you can find. Now compare the quantities using words like more, less, same.

Math Complete the pattern using the resource below.

Math Using a newspaper or magazine find different shapes and talk about the sides and corners. Compare how they are different and similar.

Literacy Play, “I spy”

Literacy Ask your child about words that rhyme. For example, “What other words sound like car?”

Literacy Ask your child to make a storybook with their own pictures. Help your child write the words or at least some of the letters in the story.

Literacy Encourage your child to write their name and names of family members in a greeting card or on a picture. Once your child can use all the letters well, then work on using lower and upper case letters.

Literacy Read Knock knock jokes

Reading Time Choose a book for this week. Snuggle up and read the story to your child.

Reading Time Reread the story from yesterday. Help your child to retell the story prior to reading.

Reading Time Have your child read this week’s story to you using their own words.

Reading Time Reread the story. Help your child to recount the story in proper sequence, including major events.

Reading Time Find or create story props for the story you chose this week. Act out the story.

Physical Jump to It. Use the squares on a tile floor or draw squares on the sidewalk with chalk. Ask your child to jump 3 squares forward and one to the right. Then try, one square back and two to the left. See if your child can figure out the directions for getting back to the starting position.

Physical Red Light, Green Light. Have your child line up with a sibling or friend at a distance away from you. When you say, "Green light," the children should start running towards you. When you say, "Red light," they must stop. Anyone who doesn't follow the directions must return to the starting point. The first

Physical Walk the Line. Place some masking tape on the floor in a line and invite your child to play walking forward, backward, running, and skipping on the line.

Physical Lily Pad Hop. Your child will jump at the chance to be a pretend frog! Make lily pads out of paper and spread them on the floor. Using a regular deck of cards, draw a card. Have your child read the number and then hop on that number of "lily pads." Take a turn yourself! Who will be the first to hop all

Physical Fast, Slow. For this game, you'll need a musical instrument. You can make one with a bag of beans or a box of pasta. Identify an object a short distance away for your family to walk towards. When you shake the instrument slowly, everyone must walk slowly. When the instrument is shaken quickly,

Creative Time Sorting Laundry. Ask your child to help you sort the laundry into two piles: light colors and dark colors. Provide several examples to begin each pile. Then see if your child can take the lead!

Creative Time Create a beautiful ocean scene with crayons and watercolors! Have your child use crayons to draw any ocean animal on a sheet of thick paper. (You can also draw outlines of animals for your child to color in

Creative Time Pour some water into a bucket or any other plastic container, add a squirt of dish soap, and grab a whisk. Ask your child to stir up some bubles. Remind your child about this activity when washing their hands.

Creative Time Make a paper airplane together and test it out! How far can it fly? No matter how far it goes, it always lands somewhere. That’s because of gravity!

Creative Time Penguins can’t fly, but they move in a lot of other ways! Play a game of follow-the-leaderpenguin style! Have your child follow behind you and copy your movements as you lead him or her around the house. You can say things like “Swim, penguin!” and move your arms through the “water.” You can “splash” by flapping your “wings” up and down. You can also hop and waddle!

Lesson Time

Your child is learning how to tell when something happens by accident. An accident is when we do something we didn’t mean to do.

When something happens by accident, your child can: •Say, “It was an accident. I didn’t mean to

. Are you okay?”•Do something to help

Understanding that sometimes things happen by accident helps your child get along with others.

Play Time

Play a pretend game with your child to practice responding to accidents.

Say: We’re going to play a pretend game. We’ll take turns pretending something happened by accident. Pretend I spilled milk on your drawing. Model what to say: It was an accident. I didn’t mean to. Say how you’ll help: I’ll wipe it up.

Take turns using other pretend accidents. Say:• You accidentally tore a page out of my book.• I accidentally dropped your toy and it broke.•You accidentally got mud on the floor

with your dirty shoes.

Story Time

This week’s story is about Adam and Miles. Adam accidentally runs into Miles’s bike. Ask your child about this story.• What do you see in this photo?• How do you think Miles feels about being run into? (Mad, surprised, sad.)• Did Adam mean to run into Miles? (No. It was an accident.)• How do you think Adam feels? (Sorry, surprised, sad.)

Let’s take turns practicing what Adam can say to Miles. (It was an accident. I didn’t mean to run into you. Are you okay?)
