ELEMENT OF THE DAY 98 – Californium – Cf The University of California, Berkley is credited with

discovering and naming elements 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 100, 101, 102 and 106. Most of the others in this range were discovered by The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Russia. The two institutions have a sort of rivalry over their race to discover the transuranic elements.

Californium is the last element with truly useful applications. It is a powerful neutron emitter. Neutron emission is the most dangerous type of radiation because neutrons are not charged, and so they are not deflected by protons or neutrons. Hence they can pass easily through matter and if they strike a nucleus they are likely to destabilize it. So neutron beams can make an ordinary substance radioactive.

This can be useful because each substance gives off a unique energy signature when bombarded with neutrons. Hence neutron beams can be used to detect gold in rock, oil under earth, or explosives inside a suitcase.
