To determine how many sprinklers, sprays or drippers you may use on your system, you will need to do a flow test. This can be done by either a pressure gauge test kit or a simple bucket test.

This simple bucket test can be measured by timing in seconds how long it takes to fill a 9 litre household bucket. Testing should be done at the times when you plan to run your system (ie: 6am). Test tap should be the tap closest to the watermeter. Ensure all other taps are turned off, turn the test tap on full, and then time how long it takes to fill the container.

(An allowance of 20% has been made on the bucket test which allows for the system to run at the correct sprinklers pressure.)

Formula = Container size (Litres) divided by time to fill (Seconds) Multiplied by 60 = Litres per Minute.

The pressure gauge test kit is available from most HR distributors and should be tested at the operating pressure of the selected sprinkler plus about 50kPa.

We recommend HR Products quality sprinklers for both lawn and shrub areas. Firstly, plot part circle sprinklers which throw away from the house, driveway, fences and all other perimeters, then plot full circle sprinklers. Position all sprinklers at recommended spacing as per table, designed at 207kPa.

Note: It is recommended that sprinklers are spaced at their radius performance to ensure even distribution (no dry spots). For full range of patterns and performance see chart inside.

Decide the size of the mainline to your solenoid valves from the pipe guide (The mainline is the piping from the water source). Check with your supplier if your mainline exceeds 80 metres in length or if your system is being designed for a hilly situation.

Class 18 PVC pipe should be used on the mainline where the pipe is under constant pressure. Install a master solenoid valve at the start of the system to minimize the extra cost of the class 18 piping.(Check your local water authority for pipe pressure class rating, as they vary from state to state around Australia.)

SPRINKLER SPACING GUIDEPIPE SIZE GUIDE

YOUR NEW SPRINKLER SYSTEM

Starting now, you wonʼt have to drag hoses and sprinklers around the yard. Youʼll get better watering coverage of your lawn, shrubs, trees and gardens with an installed water conserving system. And by installing the system yourself, youʼll save money and feel satisfaction of completing a job well done.

Take measurements of areas to be watered such as lawns, flower beds and vegetable gardens.Plot these measurements as well as the position of trees, sheds, paved areas onto the graph paper provided. The scale on the graph paper is 1 metre equals 1 centimetre.Mark on the graph paper the position of your water source, eg:• A domestic mains source – location of the water meter, and

the position of the tap closest to the meter.• Alternative water source – the location of the bore hole,

dam, river or tank with elevations on the property.

Water Saving DIY Irrigation Design and Application

Determine number of ball valve/solenoid valves required by dividing available flow into total flow required when all sprinklers are plotted.

Choose most convenient and practical locations to tee off from mainline and install ball valve/solenoid valve after tee off. Then draw in remaining pipe work and go about sizing remaining pipe work.

Tools Required:• Marking Stakes • Axe • Tape Measure• String Line • Rake • Hacksaw• Trenching shovel • Wrench • Spade• Multi Grips • Poly Cutter or Sharp Knife

Preparation: Assemble fittings which screw together. Sprinkler to risers, and then assemble to tees or elbows (Note: this assembly can be used as a depth gauge for digging trenches). Screw valve sockets into valves (thread seal tape should be used on these threads), place these assemblies alongside trenches where they are to be installed.

Marking Out: Use stakes and string line to mark position of trenches and keep straight.

Trenching: If trenching in established lawn, use an axe or a spade to cut trench sides and cut turf into sods, the sods can be removed and placed alongside trench using a trenching shovel. Remove soil from trench, placing it on the opposite side to sods. Now the sprinkler assembly can be used to gauge the depth of trenches.

To go under paths, driveways and paving, select the appropriate PVC pipe size. Cut a 45° angle on the leading end and slightly flare the end with the end angle. A trench is then dug on both sides of the path. Now a hose is pushed up the pipe and the water turned on only slightly. Start ramming and turning the pipe to move under the path. This action with the water from the hose will clear the soil from the front of the pipe.

Manual Systems: If installing a manual system, it can save time and money by installing solenoid cable in the trenches with the piping, to make conversion to an automatic system simple at a later date.

Review your plan, then order what you need. Check over details, then order sprinklers and valves from your HR distributor. Use materials required section to order items you need.

IMPORTANT: Consult local authorities for: Telephone buried cables, water pipes, backflow prevention laws, underground power supplies, gas pipes. (Blackflow prevention and isolating valves must be installed by a certified plumber/contractor, where required by State Laws.)

Automatic Systems: An automatic watering system will save you time and money. You will require a sprinkler timer, solenoid valves and cable (solenoid valves are installed in place of gate and ball valves). Cable is required to run between solenoid valves and the controller. The cable only carries 24 volts so it is easy to do yourself. Cable sizes are determined by the distance between the solenoid valves and the controller. eg: 0.5mm² maximum distance 100m, 1.0mm² maximum distance 500m.

Cables should be taped to the underside of the pipe work, and wire joints should be connected with HR waterproof electrical cable connectors. A Galcon Battery operated solenoid valve is recommended in situations where the laying of solenoid wire is not possible.

Final Check: Remove sprinkler tops and then turn the system on. This will flush out any dirt trapped in the pipework. Once the system has been flushed, turn off the system, replace the sprinkler tops. Check system again before filling the trenches, this time looking for any leaks in the pipe work and adjust sprinklers for coverage. If joints and sprinkler performance is satisfactory, fill in trenches and replace sods. Make sure sprinklers are just level with ground to avoid sprinkler damage from lawn mowers.
