Thank You Sponsors! I am so thrilled from all of the feedback we have gotten from people who enjoy VYPE magazine.

A man recently told me “We appreciate you highlighting our kids, our community loves the magazine.” A school administrator told me “I love how VYPE highlights the FCA kids and the

kids with great academics and strong character.”

We hope that younger athletes are looking at the magazine and the FCA Feature or the Academic Athlete or the Character Counts story and think “I want to be like them when I grow up.”

We want to thank our advertisers who make this possible. The only way we could do a high quality magazine like this and give it away for FREE by the thousands in your community is by the investment made by these advertisers.

Thanks for all of the great comments and suggestions on how to make the magazine better.

We have already started working on our massive 400+ page statewide Football Preview that comes out in July and will be available on newsstand across Oklahoma. You can pre-order a copy a VYPEOK.COM.

After winning the Class 2A state slow-pitch softball title the Barnsdall Lady Panthers are the team of the month for the North region. The Lady Panthers were the prototypical Cinderella story. Barnsdall was ranked No. 18 in the state when the playoffs began. But the Lady Panthers fought their way through a district tournament that contained Frontier, Welch and Oaks to advance to a regional tournament in Davenport. As the four seed in the regional Barnsdall upset No. 5 ranked

Pond Creek-Hunter with a 5-0 win. The Lady Panthers then went on to beat Mason 10-1 to advance to the state tournament. In the first round at state the Lady Panthers edged the Turner Lady Falcons by a score of 11-10. Barnsdall then went on to knock off Dewar 9-4 in the semifinals to advance to the title game against Soper. The Lady Panthers fell behind Soper 10-4 early on in the title game but then went on to score 13 runs in the final three innings to earn the 17-10 win and give

head coach Joe Gilbert his first slow-pitch state title.SR Sarah JohnsonJR Brandi GayJR Courtney SwiftJR Makaylan McCabeJR LaKeesha LfFloreSO Gracie IsaacSO Clerissa GrimFR Michala AllisonFR Alyssa BabbFR Sarra MolesFR Ciara McCabeFR Taylor ShawFR Maria QuesadaCoach Joe GilbertAsst. By Rex HoltEvery school year has its share of amazing athletic performances and for a trio of cities in Payne County the 2012-13 campaign was no exception. What some of the individual athletes at Stillwater, Cushing and Perkins-Tryon high schools accomplished from August to May is a long and impressive list. Then to narrow it down to the

“Magnificent Seven’’ performances, including both boys and girls in every sport at all three locals, was a very difficult task but one that Vype magazine was willing to accept. So here’s our take on the very best the Pioneers, Tigers and Demons had to offer this past school year. GAGE STALLWORTH, CUSHING – This Tiger standout had an incredible year. The junior running back first led the Cushing football team to a 7-3 record and the Class 3A state playoffs with a whopping 1,930 yards rushing and 35 touchdowns. He followed that up by winning his second Class 4A state wrestling championship at 160 pounds, finishing the year with a near-perfect 24-1 record. NOAH GADE, STILLWATER – The SHS senior captured the Class 6A State Cross Country championship and was named the Gatorade Runner of the Year in Oklahoma. Gade also starred for the Pioneer track team this spring and finished runner-up in the 6A State Championships in the 3,200-meter run, losing by less than a second in the finals. He also placed fifth in 1,600-meter run. MCKENZIE STANFORD, PERKINS-TRYON – This senior had a major role in leading the Lady Demons to 28 straight victories and the Class 3A Championship game. Stanford averaged 13.6 points and seven rebounds per

game. She then claimed the high jump crown at the Class 3A State Track and Field Championship with a leap of five-feet, six-inches, while also placing fifth in the 100-meter hurdles. CHE’RON LEWIS, CUSHING – Another girls basketball standout, who sparked the Lady Tigers all the way to the Class 4A state semifinals and a fine 25-2 record. Lewis’ impressive statistics for the year read 17.7 points, 11.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.8 steals per game. The 5-11, senior also

competed in track and field for CHS and placed fifth in the discus at the Class 4A Championships. BRANDON PRATHER, STILLWATER – As a sophomore, Prather became one of the most feared receivers and kick return specialists in Class 6A football. He logged 65 catches for 1,015 yards and nine touchdowns. Also had another 369 yards on 14 kickoff returns, a 26.3 average. He finished his year at Yukon by winning the 6A state title in the long jump (23-feet, 5.5-inches). JORDAN GORHAM, PERKINS-TRYON – Before the crushing loss to Sulphur in the 3A State Championship game, the Lady Demons were a perfect 28-0 and Gorham led the charge. The Oklahoma Christian College signee led P-T in points-per-game (16.2) and all of 3A in rebounding at 10.5. The consensus All-State honoree also averaged two blocks per

game, along with a 65.1 field-goal percentage. KAID BROCK, STILLWATER – Another one-sport athlete who made the cut because of perfection. The Stillwater sophomore was simply perfect this past wrestling season as Brock logged a spotless 37-0 record en route to capturing the Class 6A State Championship at 113 pounds with a 3-1 victory over Jacob Fontanez of Owasso in the finals. HONORABLE MENTION – Hunter Boykin, Cushing; Carson Teel, Stillwater; Caleb White, Perkins-Tryon; Rico Thompson, Stillwater; Nick Tanner, Cushing; Peyton Meacham, Stillwater; Kiley Josey, Stillwater; Devin Payton, Perkins-Tryon; Matt Waitt, Perkins-Tryon; Gabby Shelton, Stillwater; John Sasser, Perkins-Tryon; Becca Worthy, Stillwater.

Character is a combination of qualities that distinguishes one person or group from another. Hideaway Pizza celebrates achievements of local high school athletes by presenting the monthly “Character Counts Award.”

Stillwater senior Abbie Woods is the Stillwater Character Counts Athlete of the Month. Woods placed second in the long jump at the Class 6A state meet after winning the event at the regional meet the week prior.Woods has been running track since her sophomore year when she started just after swimming season and had only nine weeks of competition but her 4x800-meter relay team qualified for state and Woods was hooked. This season as a senior Woods used her leadership to help younger teammates prepare for regionals and state by setting clear goals and working towards them.“I asked them what their goals were. Then during workouts I encouraged them to work hard and push themselves to improve their times, starts, and handoffs,” Woods said. “During their events I cheered for them and also tried to teach them how to better fuel their bodies. I also encouraged them to have a positive mindset.”

In the fall, Woods will travel north to Winfield Kan. where she will be a member of the Southwestern College track and field team and soccer team all while pursuing a degree in Athletic Training.

How long have you been involved in FCA? I have been involved for close to 6 years.

Who influenced you to join? John Talley

How has your beliefs helped you as an athlete? As I know that God has remained faithful to me through injuries and losses, I have remained faithful to my teammates and they know that I will do anything for them and that’s all you can ask of an athlete.

What is your favorite bible verse and why? Romans 1:16 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.” It reminds me to speak out for my faith and not be afraid of what others might say or the rejection I will receive.

How have you used your beliefs or your association in FCA to help others or spread the word? I have been able to share the word of God to others on the soccer team. When people see that I carry a bible verse in my sports bag and ask I can tell them I carry it because it is very important to me and reminds me what is most important and that’s God.

By Rex HoltAt the end of any athletic season there is usually only one happy team. The Stillwater High School baseball team played well enough to host a Class 6A Regional Tournament but not well enought to advance to the 6A State Championship in Shawnee.“Any time you host a regional you have a great chance to advance, but we just didn’t hit the ball in key situations and that kept us out of the state tournament,’’ explained Holt. “We weren’t head and shoulders better than anybody but it was a very winnable regional for us in our ballpark.“We win our first game against Enid (19-5) with 19 hits and then lose to Bishop Kelley (2-0) and Mustang (4-3) because we couldn’t get a hit when it mattered. Kelley won it and deserved to. They’re a very good, young ballclub and will be again next year. But so should we. We only lose three starters and have a chance to be pretty good next year.’’SHS, which closed the year with a 17-14 record, will lose three veterans in centerfielder Nathan Joliff, who

hit .347 this season; outfielder/first baseman Will Pendleton (.397) and third baseman Taylor Throne (.339).However, the Pioneers, who finished second to state champion Owasso in the District 6A-3 standings at 9-4, will return a lot of talent in juniors Carson Teel, Sam Kraybill, Gunner Black and Jon Littell, along with sophomores T.J. Black and Will Fowler.Teel hit over .400 as an outfielder and spearheaded Stillwater’s pitching corps as the lefthander posted a 7-3 record and a stingy 1.66 earned-run-average. Teel also struck out 64 and walked only 13 in 59 innings on

the mound. Meanwhile, righthander Kraybill logged a 5-4 mound record and Gunner Black, also a righthander, recorded a fine 2.27 ERA.Littell, an Oklahoma State University verbal commitment, will be back after leading SHS in batting average (.438) home runs (3) and runs-batted-in (25).T.J. Black and Fowler, both right handers, were 2-2 with a 1.80 ERA and 2-1 with a save and a 4.50 ERA, respectively.“This year had a lot of ups and downs and the weather was messed up for everybody, like us having to

play seven or eight district games in a row,’’ added Holt, who went over the 300-win plateau this year as a prep head coach, including his previous stint at Glencoe. “We played hard and we played pretty well defensively and our pitching didn’t get us beat.“We just didn’t score and I thought we were better offensive team than we showed at the end. But we’ll be back, hopefully with a better finish next year.’’The 2013 finish, however, still included a big trophy at the state meet in Shawnee as the Pioneers received the OSSAA Class 6A Academic Baseball State Championship with an impressive 3.75 team grade-point-average.

At the start of the season fans of Depew softball knew they had a good team, but how far they could go was yet to be determined. Head coach Curtis Lee was only returning three seniors. Jimi Davis, Ellie Toles and Deanna Dobbs were all back for their final seasons and a strong junior class of six players would help propel the Lady Hornets to a great season. Juniors Christian Varnell, Cassidy Thompson, Savanah Weaver, Sierra Weaver, Riley Pettigrew and Kara Parrott joined the three seniors as

they cruised to a 20-8 record and a No.5 ranking in Class 3A.Wins over Ripley and two over Kiefer gave the squad a lot of momentum heading into regional’s. During the regional tournament the Lady Hornets faced some tough competition in Wetumka, Morrison and the host team Preston, but despite the difficult regional the Lady Hornets advanced to state. In the first round the Lady Hornets faced Mooreland who finished the regular season ranked No.9 at 26-9.

Mooreland and Depew fought it out, but it was Mooreland who came out on top, 7-5. Despite the outcome of the game the Lady Hornets gained invaluable experience and have something to build on for next season. # Name0 Shalese Osborn 1 Kaylee Halterman 2 Sierra Weaver 3 Laramie Hall 7 Christian Varnell 8 Riley Pettigrew 10 Kara Parrott 12 Deanna Dobbs 15 Raven Varnell 17 Cassidy Thompson 18 Savanah Weaver 30 Ellie Toles 36 Jimi Davis Head Coach: Curtis Lee Assistant Coach: Olen MayberryEditor’s Note: Central Tech is proud to support Depew high school students. The Cleveland boys track team served as the pace car for the Tigers during the spring sports season placing 13th at the Class 4A state meet. Other big stories this year was the play of the Cleveland baseball team who won a district title before seeing its season end at a regional tournament held at Metro Christian High School.Girls track athlete Bailey Roe and girls golfer Kyler Clapp also shined this spring by qualifying for their respective state competitions.Roe qualified in the pole vault and her mark of 7-06.00 left her in 13th place in the event. Although Roe didn’t place at the state meet she said that it was an honor to qualify.“It was a great honor and opportunity to be able to jump at state this year. It was an indescribable feeling to hear the man at regionals say congratulations, you’re going to

state,” Roe said. “Coming off of an ankle injury I knew it wasn’t going to be easy but I just wanted to try my best. I ended up not doing near as well as I had hoped for, but it really only motivated me for next year to get healed up, work hard, make it to state again and perform to the best of my ability once more.”Clapp meanwhile competed as an individual at the Class 4A girls golf tournament at Lake Hefner South Golf Course and finished in 61st place overall. For the boys track team all of the 21 team points the Tigers accumulated came from the duo of distance runners Baylor Harvey and Wyatt Woodrell. Harvey placed first in both the 1600 and 3200-meter runs with times of 4:33.14 and 9:44.79 respectively. Harvey said that going into the state meet he thought he could win both races but also knew that

the competition would be strong, especially from Tristan Owens of Oologah.“I felt confident of my ability to win in both races but I was also aware of how strong the competition would be, especially against Tristan Owens. He is a great runner and made both races memorable and interesting,” Harvey said.Woodrell meanwhile placed sixth in the 3200 with a time of 10:26.70.

By Phil TurneyAlthough he admits to not remembering everything these days, Dwight Winburn recalls it like it was yesterday. The fall of 1962, just a freshman in the tiny community of Marshall, Oklahoma he decided that one day he would be a head coach in Oklahoma. Thus begins the roller coaster ride and a life full of accomplishments for those who know this Hall of Famer.A gifted athlete at Marshall High School, Dwight Winburn was a standout four sport athlete excelling in football, basketball, baseball and track. But he was already thinking like a coach knowing that his size would probably not get him an athletic scholarship at the next level. Not to get too far ahead of ourselves, but I think it’s important to know what type of man we’re dealing with. A lifetime of basketball accomplishments pales in comparison to his leadership, faith and trust in God. Dwight Winburn also found time to become a licensed Baptist minister. A noted speaker, Winburn has also officiated two weddings. His son Chuck’s and the wedding of one of his greatest players, Kinzie Glover Didier. Besides becoming a hall of fame girl’s basketball coach, Winburn graduated from Central Oklahoma State in 1970 with a major in business, a minor in physical education and he became an electrical engineer working on our nation’s missile system while in the army.

Pretty heady stuff for a guy whose graduation class consisted of 18.Dwight Winburns’ story is most intriguing because he announced his retirement at the age of 65 this past spring, resigning as Athletic Director and girls head coach at Ponca City High School. But as they say, when one door closes, another opens. More on that later. After graduating High School in 1966 from Marshall, located between Stillwater and Hennessey, Winburn left for UCO in Edmond. He graduated from UCO in 1970, diploma in hand and the love of his life at his side.Dwight and Mary Winburn were married in 1969. Six days after they celebrated their first wedding anniversary, he was on his way to Fort Polk, Louisiana to begin a 3 year stint in the army. This became another key part of this story. Mary Winburn. All coaches will tell you just how important the role wives or husbands play in their success. This is no different. “It’s been hard for her. The challenges they face. People ridicule you no matter what. She’s had to sit in stands and put up with people’s comments. It’s been very difficult for her. She’s a class act, I mean she’s taken it and she knew this was a partnership thing so she shares all that. It’s not just me, it’s her,” Winburn said. Dwight and Mary had a son, Chuck in 1973. “I felt a there were times I didn’t give him the attention because of other kids. I didn’t raise just one son. But it affected my son and his life. My wife and son were unselfish and wanted me to be happy!”The coaching road first led Winburn to Hennessey where he coached from 1973-1983. His 1981 team was the only team to defeat Kingfisher (32-1) and State Champions. He then moved to Laverne. In 1987, his Laverne girls team went to the State Tournament, only their second trip ever. Then it was on to Clinton. In 1990 Winburn fell in love with the small community

of Newkirk, Oklahoma, just north of Ponca City, thus beginning a run of seven State tournament appearances and a State runner-up in 2005. He was named Oklahoma Coach of the year that year.In 2008 he accepted the head girls coaching job at Ponca City High School. His first season, the Lady Cats under Dwight Winburn went 17-10 and returned to the State Tournament. He then spent the last two seasons as Athletic Director and head girls coach in Ponca City. When you add it up, 39 years of coaching, nine state tournament teams, Oklahoma girls basketball All-State coach in 1987 & 2010 and Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State coach 2010.11 All-StAte PlAyerSRhonda Greenhoward-HennesseyAndrea Pile-LaverneAmy Mccombs, Donna Luis, Christy Scheiber, Kaycie Whitworth, Suzie Eisenhauer, Karlie Howerton and Kinzie Glover-NewkirkMica Havens & Lauren Vetters-Ponca City519 Wins295 lossesWinning percentage 64%So it’s time to close the book on Dwight Winburn and wish him well in his retirement. Not so fast. The final chapter in this book has not been written. Five days after leaving Ponca City, he accepted the Newkirk girls basketball job that just opened. He will remain retired from teaching, but since the Newkirk gym is only a block from his home, he’ll be back on the court this fall doing what he loves and knows that he wanted way back in 1962. And don’t be surprised if this minister, engineer, educator and coach adds a few wins to his current total before he’s done.

Dwight winburn recalls it all

The Commerce boys and girls track teams were facing a huge challenge this year at the state tournament. Both teams enjoyed some success this season, but the competition seemed to step up to another level as Class 2A and A teams converged on Carl Albert High School. Weather plagued track meets all year and the state meet faced some of the same problems. Cooler than normal temperatures didn’t slow anyone down, but the constant threat of bad weather had the coaches wondering if the meet would only last two days. Boys head coach Steve Moss had several hopefuls, who performed well at regional’s, including DC Chance who placed third in the long jump and fifth in the 100m at Oologah. Israel Ortiz placed fifth in the 800m at regional’s and was a member of the 4X400 relay team with Blake Jameson, Tyson Howard and Saul Castilleja. Other team members such as Dylan Brandon and Logan Smith ran the 4X100 and 4X200 with Jameson and Chance, but all three teams failed to place at state. Overall it was a tough

experience, but the Commerce Tiger track team worked hard this season to make the state meet, now they work to get on the podium.

Jake Sharp and the girls track team led by senior Haley

Barker and sophomore Hannah Barker did enjoy some success this year, but they were not satisfied with their regional performances and wanted to prove what they could do at state. The relay teams shinned for Commerce with the girls 4X100 and 4X200 teams taking first place in Class 2A. Hannah Barker had a solid finish in the 100-meters taking fifth place while Haley sixth in both the 100 and 200-meters. The girls fourth place finish overall in Class 2A was an outstanding achievement for the Lady Tigers. With athletes like Hannah Barker returning to the team next year, coach Sharp will look to build on that success with Barker leading the pack. Cross Country: In her first season as a Bruin, Barnes placed fifth at regionals and fifth at the Class 6A cross country meet in the fall. Barnes also competed in the meet of Champions and placed 10th. Barnes also qualified for the state meet during track season in both the 1600 and 3200-meter runs.7. Calen Crowder, Senior, Football: Crowder toted the ball 202 times this season for the Bruins racking up 1,503 yards, averaging 7.4 yards per carry and finding the end zone 11 times. 8. Blair Koster, Sophomore, Girls Track: Koster won the 100-meter dash at the Ponca City regional and placed third in the 300-meter hurdles. Although Koster didn’t place in either event at the state meet she has made herself known as a serious contender for the next several years.9. Katie Vogel, Senior, Girls Soccer: Vogel has been a multi-year starter in goal for the Lady Bruins and this season helped anchor the Bartlesville defense and guide

them to a 6A state playoff appearance where they lost to eventual state runner-up Jenks 2-1 in the first round.10. Slade Nordic, Sophomore, Track: Nordic placed second in the 100-meter dash at the regional meet in Ponca City with a time of 11.23. Nordic then improved that time to 11.19 at the state meet preliminaries but came up just short of qualifying for the finals in the event.

LaDena Wilson, mother of Bartlesville Bruin Basketball player Paige Wilson, is our latest Mom of the Month.

LaDena Wilson attended all of Paige’s sporting events throughout her career. Paige says she relies on her Mom for more than just sports. “I talk to her about every life situation.”

Paige said that her Mom served as the “team mom” for everyone on her summer basketball team, the Tulsa Shock. She is very involved in team activities including decorating lockers for the players and other parent and team events.

She makes sure Paige is healthy and well-fed and schedules all activities for the Wilson family.

LaDena and her husband Terry have been busy for several years raising Paige’s older brother, Tyler, who wrestled at Bartlesville, and Kayla, who was involved in gymnastics. When not attending Bruin and Shock basketball games, both LeDena and Terry work at Conoco-Phillips.

Paige will be taking her talents to Drury College in Springfield, MO, where LaDena will be visiting her daughter next year, not only to watch her play, but to continue supporting her on and off the court.

We know we can’t begin to compete with a mother’s priceless gifts. That’s why we’re proud to support Vype’s “Mom of the Month” winner. She’ll receive free concert tickets from us and thanks beyond measure.

At ConocoPhillips, we’re building on our SPIRIT values – safety, people, integrity, responsibility, innovation and team-work – to create a company like no other. A company with global reach and strong ties to the local communities where we operate. With more than 1,500 employees in the community, ConocoPhillips is proud to call Bartlesville home.

As an industry leader exclusively focused on exploration and production, we are pioneering a new standard of excel-lence. But even as we embark on this new journey, the way we do business, our pride as a Bartlesville citizen – our spirit – is staying the same. It’s just a part of who we are.

Bartlesville senior girls soccer player Mara DeMuth is the Conoco Character Counts Athlete of the Month. DeMuth played center back for the Lady Bruins this year as well as serving as team captain.Bartlesville head girls soccer coach Aaron Kuntz praised DeMuth for her leadership and character on the field.“Mara has been an excellent leader and captain for our soccer team. Her leadership by example has created a work ethic and positive environment that helped our team find the postseason,” Kuntz said. “This is an accomplishment that has not happened for several years and a portion of this success is due to the attitude and leadership Mara provided.”DeMuth’s leadership also helped the

Lady Bruins put together a four-game winning streak to cap off the regular season. After getting off to a 2-6 start this season those four wins helped the Lady Bruins turn things around and reach the postseason for the first time since 2009. Possibly the biggest of those final four victories came against the Sand Springs Lady Sandites on April 16. DeMuth helped anchor a Bartlesville defense that shutout Sand Springs until the Lady Bruins could finally put in a penalty kick and earn the 1-0 win clinching a spot in the playoffs. In the playoffs the Lady Bruins came up just short against eventual state runner-up Jenks but the Bartlesville defense was again solid holding the Lady Trojans to just two goals.

The Bartlesville area boasted several strong teams this spring including the Dewey Bulldoggers and Caney Valley Trojans baseball teams, the Bartlesville girls and boys soccer teams and the Barnsdall Lady Panthers slow pitch softball team.On the pitch both the Bruins and Lady Bruins made the postseason although both were eliminated in close losses in the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs. The Lady Bruins got into the playoffs for the first time since 2009 on the strength of a four-game winning streak but were knocked off by eventual state runner-up Jenks. The boys team meanwhile went 5-2 in district play and placed third in district three behind Owasso and Broken Arrow. In the playoffs the Bruins suffered a mild 3-2 upset loss to Bixby.Dewey meanwhile made an appearance in the state tournament since 1985 when they finished as state runner-up. This season the Bulldoggers finished with a 27-6 overall record after a 3-0 first round loss to eventual state champ Berryhill. The success this year came on the backs of Dewey’s three-pronged pitching attack of Carson LaRue, Jimmie Marsh and Chase Carver. The trio combined to go 27-4 on the mound this year while

all of them threw over 40 innings. Two members of that trio, LaRue and Carver, will be back next season as seniors making Dewey a serious threat to make a deep postseason run in 2014.Caney Valley also made a state baseball tournament appearance in Class 2A. For the Trojans it was the first trip to state in school history. Overall Caney Valley finished with a 23-6 record after losing to Silo in the state semifinals. Senior Kyle Knight led the Trojans this year. At the plate Knight recorded a .544 batting

average this season with nine home runs and 10 doubles along with driving in 44 runs. Knight, who has signed to play at Eastern Oklahoma next season, also was the Trojans’ ace on the mound this year and carried Caney Valley to a 4-2 upset win over Silo in the first round at state. Knight held Latta to just two runs on three hits all while working around four errors. The senior also struck out eight Latta hitters in the first round victory.
