Dear Parishioner,

I had the privilege many years ago of working with Rev. John E. O’Brien, a priest of the Archdiocese in Newark. Writing for Renew International, he reflected on today’s readings:

This Sundays’ readings continue the mystery of God’s grade and point out reasons (“dodges”) that we present which distract us in our pursuit of the reign of God.

The first dodge of Ezekiel is, “The Lord’s way is not fair!” So, like pouting children, we often are angry at God because we decide God is unjust, but Ezekiel counters this with the head-on argument of the Lord, “When a virtuous person turns away from virtue to commit iniquity, and dies, it is because of the iniquity he committed that he must die. But if a wicked person, turning from the wickedness he has committed, does what is right and just, he shall preserve his life.”

The gospel tells us not to be taken in by words alone. Look to the action. One son says “yes” to service for his father, but never goes into the field. The second says “no,” but regrets it and goes out and works. Who really does the will of the father?

Lastly, Jesus warns us that our justice is a matter of conversion. Don’t be taken in by the nice people who do nothing with regard to God’s call. They’re too comfortable to change. Often times the wrong people, like the prostitutes, can and did in Jesus’ time respond with generosity.

So there are many dodges to avoid the decision of repentance or conversion. “God’s not fair.” “Yes, but later.” “What, join those terrible people?” We can easily make a cult of being “the artful dodger.”

In the past weeks, all of our religious education programs for the year have begun. I am grateful to the many dedicated parishioners who have put their faith into action as catechists, aides and volunteers for the children of our parish.

This week let’s ponder the “dodges” in our own lives. Let’s face them head-on and strive to be people of faith in action.

Peace! Jacqueline Alworth Pastoral Associate for Faith Formation
