T echnology makes it so easy to communi-cate, yet one of our biggest challenges is helping our 3100 students and their fami-

PTA and teachers support Propositions Y + YY on November ballot!

T he amazing Save Our Schools effort this past summer saved our schools for this year only. City of Santa Monica Proposi-

tions Y and YY, on the November 2 ballot, are critical to preventing future teacher layoffs, as well as cuts in music, arts, AP classes, and other academic services. They will also protect Santa Monica’s exceptional 911 emergency response service, paramedics and libraries.

Prop Y, a local funding measure, and Prop YY, an advisory measure, can generate about $12 million a year in new revenue for the City of Santa Monica by adding a half of a percent to the current sales tax. Per Prop YY, half of that revenue is intended to go to schools, education and after school programs, and the other half to protect vital city services.

Props Y and YY will generate a reliable, long-term revenue source that Sacramento cannot touch. Props Y and YY are necessary because Sacramento has taken back over $40 million from the City over the last six years, and another $20 million from our schools in the past two years. Without Props Y and YY, our schools face devastating cuts for next year that will continue for years on end, and are likely to get worse. Both measures must pass by 50% plus one and are supported by our local class-room teachers, police, firefighters, the League of Women Voters, and parents.

Please vote on November 2 to protect Santa Monica High!

Mock ACT/ SAT ExamsSamohi counseling department will be part-

nering with Revolution Prep to offer full length mock SAT & ACT Exams here at Samohi. Cost is $10; proceeds to benefit the Samohi counsel-ing dept. Students have the option of taking EITHER the Mock SAT or Mock ACT. This is an excellent opportunity to practice or explore which test might be right for you. Students will receive an on-line score report with detailed performance analysis, including written feed-back on the essay. The Mock SAT/Mock ACT is only a practice test, not the official SAT/ACT exam. Students can sign up for either test on all remaining dates.

Tips regarding college applications and testing

Register NOW for upcoming SAT or ACT exams.n The UCs require the SAT Reasoning Test or ACT

plus writing and 2 Subject tests, some private schools require 3 Subject tests.

n Apply Early! Many schools have “rolling admis-sions”; colleges on the Common App as well as other private school applications are available now for the 2011—2012 school year.

n Most private colleges have Early Action/Early Decision deadlines of November 1 or Novem-ber 15! Check the schools you are applying to for their deadlines.

n Think about what and how you want to study when considering a college. Remember, the University of California system focuses on Research and Development whereas the California State University system are practical based and many require internships as part of

We do not weight grades at Santa Monica High School. If you want to know your weighted GPA, you can access Santa Monica High School’s list of UC approved “a-g” courses for honors credit at: admissions.ucop.edu/doorways/list After you pull up the website, type in “Santa Monica High School” in the space provided and it will verify

the school name, then click on the school name to access this list. By taking one of these courses, it boosts your GPA by one point ( A= 5, B=4, C=3). The “a-g” course list is approved by both the UC and CSU institutions; numerous private and inde-pendent colleges also refer to it as well. If taking a class at a community college, most institutions give the GPA boost as well.

P TSA’s College panel on October 19 brought together admissions repre-sentatives from a private university, the UC and Cal State systems, and Santa Monica College,

alongside our Samohi college counselors. The evening was moderated by Samohi alum Ben Allen, a SMMUSD School Board Member, UC Berkeley Law School alum and former UC Regent. Representa-tives from UCLA, USC, CSUN, and SMC spoke about their admissions process, followed by a lively Q & A. Samohi AAPSSSG

S amohi’s African American Parent Student Staff Support Group (AAPSSSG), an exten-sion of the PTSA, is kicking off another

school year with inspiring guest speakers, SAT resource information, food, fun and fellowship!

Our goal is to support the BSU, fundraise for scholarships to be given to Rites of Passage participants (seniors) and provide parents with access to information and resources to ensure student success. We’ll be discussing prop Y & YY, College Prep, African American history, how parents can help their student achieve, resources available at Samohi and the city of Santa Monica, and much more!

Studies show that parent participation along with a school – family partnership increases a students’ success in every area, so get involved! Come out to one or more of our meetings. Meet other parents, support your student(s) and watch them achieve!

Welcome Back staff and faculty luncheon

S amohi’s PTSA hosted a luncheon in appreciation of our faculty and staff on Friday, September 3rd. It was great to see

everyone catch up after the summer break. Many thanks to all of the parents who provided dona-tions and/or their time!

Bike It! Day rides again!

W ednesday, October 13 was a day to bike, bus, or walk–go green and get to school without a car! Worldwide the bike is

back as an elegant solution to transportation. We are leading the change in Santa Monica. Over the last four years, the Samohi Solar Alliance initiative, Bike It! Day, has emerged as a school wide commitment to the environment, personal responsibility and doing things differently. And this year Bike It! Day expanded dramatically, as a result of the SSA citywide campaign. Thousands of kids from K through 12 walked, caught a bus or rode their bikes to school. The reduced car trips saved emissions and students exercised an overall healthy and environmental value.

Tardy? Missing school? Leaving early?

M issing the beginning of a class decreases a student’s academic success, disrupts the flow of instruction, and affects

the learning of others. The school wide Tardy Program is an effort to curb students entering classes after the start bell. Periods 1 through 6, teachers lock their classroom doors at the class bell. Students need to get a pass to enter — for Period 1 enter the tardy room via the patio inside the 6th & Pico gate; for periods 2 through 6, go to the main office in the Admin building.

When returning from an absence, students bring ID and parent note to House Office before start of school day; a.m. classes report to the college center in the Admin from 7:00 am – 7:45 am. The note should include: name and ID #, date of absence, period(s) absent if less than an entire day, reason for absence, signature of parent/guardian, and phone number where parent/guardian can be reached for verifica-tion. Teacher/coach for school sponsored event (performance/field trip/athletics) will be responsible to clear the absence, but you will still get a call and/or email for periods missed.

To leave school early, students bring parent note to your house office between 7:15 a.m. and 8:10 a.m. on the day leaving school. Include name and ID #, date at time leaving school, reason, parent/guardian signature and parent/guardian phone number for verification. If the House Office can’t verify the note, student will not be released. If the parent knows that s/he cannot be reached, call House Assistant.

This year, Santa Monica High School will be evaluated by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), which is the entity responsible for granting accreditation to public schools. Accreditation is a very impor-tant process, as it gives us a chance to look at ourselves critically and figure out how we can be a better school in all of its pertinent aspects using the most important lens to guide us, student learning. While you may have heard of accreditation, you will hear even more in the coming weeks. I encourage you to get involved through your PTSA.

Lastly, I simply want to remind you that parental support is a crucial component of a student’s success. We are grateful for all you have done and will do to support the high qual-ity of education all our students deserve.

ENGLISH LEARNERS’ ADVISORY COMMITTEE

ELAC meetings

E LAC, a Latino parent group generally meets on the third Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. usually in the Samohi cafeteria. We

want to help our Spanish speaking parents to understand the workings and systems of Samohi from the House system, to tutoring options and the college process. We are here to support our parents with workshops and ways to find help at Samohi when it is needed. Meetings are conducted in Spanish and all Samohi parents and students are invited to attend.

Samohi special education parent volunteers

T he Parent Resource Network is a group of parents who are available to support parents of students with IEPS in special

education, resource, and general education classes. Samohi’s two volunteers have years of experience navigating their children’s inde-pendent education plans, and are here to help you with any questions or issues you may have regarding your child’s education. All commu-nication between parent and PRN volunteer is confidential.

Performing Arts preview

S amohi has one of the premiere Performing Arts programs in the nation. Many of our students have performed internationally,

and our school is well represented in both state and national competitions. Here’s what’s happen-ing at Samohi.

The Samohi Marching Band has been entertain-ing the crowds at home football games, as well as competing in field show competitions across Southern California. The Concert Bands will have a new Halloween Concert on Friday, Oct. 29 at 7pm in Barnum Hall. Start your Halloween week-end with a fun-filled evening of spooky music and scary surprises! Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students/senior citizens. All Band members attend free. Band Winter Concert will be Friday, January 14, 2011.

Winter Choral Concert–Motus Perpetuus VI will be on Thursday, December 16, 2010 at 7 pm. This annual concert of perpetual motion features all the students in the Samohi Choral Program. Choirs are strategically situated throughout Barnum Hall, with songs following each other without applause from one piece to the next. This exciting, immersive experience is a perennial favorite. Tickets available at the door.

year, including the upcoming musical theatre production. Watch for casting announcements.

Having added a second jazz band last year, there are now fifty students enrolled in the jazz program at Samohi. Jazz 1 and Jazz 2 are prepar-ing for a Guest Artist Concert on January 10 in Barnum Hall with one of the trumpet greats, Wayne Bergeron. Plan to come hear them, and support jazz at Samohi!

December 3 and 4, Samohi will host the CODA (California Orchestra Directors) Honor Orchestra festival, right here on campus! Select student musicians from all over California will participate, with a final concert at Barnum Hall on Saturday, December 4, at 2:00 p.m. The concert is free and the public is welcome. The Winter Concert is December 14 at 7:00 pm in Barnum Hall. Hear Samohi’s Orchestras perform and shop the Annual Holiday Boutique for great gifts and treats. Samohi’s Theatre’s first production of the season will be A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This innovative take on one of William Shakespeare’s most- loved comedies opens December 2, and runs for six performances in the Humanities Center Theater. Tickets are available online at samohitheatre.org.

Notes from the Nurse

I am the new nurse at Samohi, replacing Lora Morn, I was previously at John Adams. As we enter flu season, the best way to avoid pass-

ing illness along is by hand washing and covering coughs and sneezes. Students with fever of 100 degrees or more need to stay home until they are fever-free. Check with your student’s physi-cian about the flu and the pertussis (whooping cough) vaccines. Crutches at school require a doctor’s note indicating the reason and length of time. Without this documentation, students cannot be on campus with crutches. Looking forward to working with your students to keep them healthy and happy.

¡La PTA y los maestros apoyan las Propuestas Y + YY en las elecciones de noviembre!

E l increíble esfuerzo de la campaña Save Our Schools este pasado verano rescaté a las escuelas solamente por este año. Las

Propuestas Y y YY de Santa Mónica en las elec-ciones del 2 de noviembre, son muy importante para prevenir pérdida de maestros, al igual que cortes en música, artes, clases AP, y otros servicios académicos. También protegen los excepcionales servicios de auxilios 911, paramédicos y bibliote-cas de Santa Mónica.

La Propuesta Y, una medida local de fondos, y la Propuesta YY, una medida asesora, puede generar $12 millones al año en ingresos nuevo para la Ciudad de Santa Mónica adicionando medio porciento a los impuestos de venta. Según la Propuesta YY, la mitad de los ingresos será dedicada a las escuelas, educación y los programas después de clases para proteger los servicios vitales de la ciudad.

Las Propuestas Y y YY crean una fuente de ingresos seguros a largo plazo que Sacramento no puede tocar. Las Propuestas Y y YY son necesar-ias ya que Sacramento le ha tomado a nuestra ciudad $40 millones en los últimos seis años. Sin las Propuestas Y y YY, nuestras escuelas enfren-tan cortes devastadores el próximo año que continuarán en los siguientes años, y posiblemente empeoren. Ambas medidas tienen que pasar con el 50% más uno y son apoyadas por los maestros, la policía, bomberos, la Liga de Mujeres Votantes, y los padres.

Exámenes Simulados de ACT/ SATEl departamento de consejería de Samohi se va

asociar con Revolution Prep para ofrecer simulación de los exámenes SAT & ACT aquí en Samohi. El costo es $10; la recaudación beneficia al departamento de consejería de Samohi. La noche fue moderada por Ben Allen el pasado alumno de Samohi, miembro de la Junta Directiva Escolar SMMUSD, graduado de la Facultad de Derecho de UC Berkeley y pasado Regente de UC. Este año, la preparatoria, Santa Monica High School será evaluada por Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), la cual es la orga-nización responsable por otorgar la acreditación a las preparatorias públicas. La acreditación es un proceso muy importante, ya que nos da la oportuni-dad de vernos críticamente y mediante este proceso ver cómo podemos mejorar la escuela en todos los aspectos pertinentes usando el lente más importante para guiarnos, el aprendizaje de los estudiantes. Aunque usted este consciente de la acreditación, va a oír mucho más en las próximas semanas. Los anima-mos a que participen mediante la PTSA.

Por último, simplemente quiero recordarles que el apoyo de los padres es un componente decisivo en el éxito de los estudiantes. Estamos agradecidos por todo lo que ustedes han hecho y harán para apoyar el alto nivel de educación que todos nuestros estudiantes se merecen.

Samohi AAPSSSG

E l Grupo de Apoyo de Padres, Estudiantes y Personal Afro-americano de Samohi (AAPSSSG), una extensión de la PTSA, está

iniciando otro año escolar con edificantes oradores, información de recursos para el SAT, comida, diver-sión y compañerismo.

Nuestra meta es de apoyar el BSU, recaudar fondos para becas otorgadas a los participantes del Rito de Pasaje (a los estudiantes que se gradúan) y proveerle a los padres con acceso a información y recursos para asegurar el éxito de sus estudiantes. Hablaremos de las Propuestas Y & YY, Preparación para la universidad, historia afro-americana, cómo los padres pueden ayudar a que su estudiantes tengan éxito y los recursos disponibles en Samohi y en la ciudad de Santa Mónica, y mucho más.

Los estudios muestran que la participación de los padres así como escuela – un consorcio entre la familia aumentan los logros del estudiante en todas las áreas, ¡así es que participe! Venga a una de nuestras reuniones. ¡Conozca a otros padres, apoye a sus estudiante(s) y véalos lograr!

Almuerzo de bienvenida al personal y la facultad

L a PTSA de Samohi patrociné un almuerzo de apreciación a nuestra facultad y personal el viernes, 3 de septiembre. Fué un placer verlos

a todos y compartir después de las vacaciones de verano. Muchas gracias a los padres que provey-eron donaciones y/o su tiempo.

¡Ven en Bici! regresó otra vez

E l miércoles, 13 de octubre fue un día para venir a la escuela en bicicleta, en autobús o caminando para hacerse verde y no usar

el carro. Mundialmente la bicicleta ha regresado como una elegante solución de transporte. Somos líderes de cambio en Santa Mónica. En los últimos cuatro años, la iniciativa ¡Ven en Bici! de la Alianza Solar de Samohi ha surgido en toda la escuela como un compromiso al ambiente, a la responsabilidad personal y para hacer las cosas diferente. Y este año el día ¡Ven en Bici! se ha extendido dramáti-camente, como resultado de la campaña SSA en la ciudad. Miles de niños de K a 12 caminaron o vinieron en autobús o bicicleta a las escuelas. Los reducidos viajes en carro reducen la emisión y los estudiantes hacen ejercicio -valores totalmente saludables y ecológicas.

¿Tardío? ¿Va a faltar a la escuela? ¿Sale temprano?

E l faltar el principio de clase disminuye el éxito académico del estudiante, interrumpe la fluidez de la instrucción y afecta a los

demás. El programa de tardanza de la escuela es un esfuerzo de cambiar el hábito de los estudiantes que entran a clase después de que toca la campana. Los periodos 1 al 6, los maestros cierran las puer-tas con llave cuando suena la campana para comen-zar la clase. Los estudiantes necesitan un pase para poder entrar a clase. Para el periodo, 1 entran al salón de tardanza vía el patio por la entrada de la calle 6 & Pico ; para los periodos 2 al 6, van a la oficina principal en el edificio de administración.

Cuando regresan de una ausencia, los estudi-antes deben traer su identificación (ID) y una nota de los padres a la Oficina de Casa antes de que empiece la escuela; para las clases de a.m. se repor-tan al centro universitario en el edificio admin-istrativo de 7:00 a.m. – 7:45 a.m.. La nota debe incluir: nombre y número de identificación (ID#), fecha de la ausencia, periodo(s) de ausencia si fue menos de un día completo, razón por la ausencia, firma de padre/guardián, y número de teléfono donde se puede hacer verificación. El maestro/entrenador que patrocina el evento (función/excursión/deportes) será responsable de exonerar la ausencia, pero usted aun así recibirá una llamada y/o correo electrónico por los periodos que faltó su hijo.

Para salir de la escuela temprano, los estudi-antes traen la nota a la oficina de casa entre las 7:15 a.m. y 8:10 a.m. el día que van a salir de la escuela. Incluya el nombre y número de identifi-cación, fecha y hora de salida de la escuela, razón, firma de padre/guardián, y número de teléfono donde se puede hacer verificación. Si la oficina de casa no puede verificar la nota, no se le permitirá la salida al estudiante. Si los padres saben que no será posible contactarlos, llame a la asistente de casa.

Reuniones ELAC

E LAC, un grupo de padres latinos, general-mente se reúne el tercer lunes de cada mes a las 6:30 p.m. casi siempre en la cafetería de

Samohi. Deseamos ayudar a los padres hispanopar-lantes a entender cómo funciona el sistema de la escuela Samohi desde el sistema de las Casas, hasta opciones en asistencia con las tareas y el proceso de la universidad. Estamos aquí para apoyar a nuestros padres con talleres y maneras de conse-guir asistencia en Samohi cuando es necesario. Las reuniones son conducidas en español y se les invita a todos los padres y estudiantes de Samohi a que participen.

Padres voluntarios de educación especial en Samohi

L a Red de Recursos de Padres (Parent Resource Network) es un grupo de padres que están disponibles para apoyar a los

padres de estudiantes con un IEP en educación especial, recurso, y clases de educación general. Las dos voluntarias de Samohi tienen años de experiencia navegando el plan independiente de educación de sus hijos, y están aquí para asistirles con cualquier pregunta o preocupación que usted pueda tener referente a la educación de su hijo/a. Toda la comunicación entre los padres y la volunta-ria del PRN es confidencial.

Noticias de la Enfermería

S oy la nueva enfermera en Samohi, reempla-zando a Lora Morn. Yo estuve previamente en la escuela John Adams. Ya que entramos

en la temporada de la gripe, la mejor manera de evitar pasar la enfermedad a otro, es lavándose las manos y cubriéndose cuando tose y estornuda. Los estudiantes con fiebre de 100 grados o más necesitan quedarse en casa hasta que esté libre de fiebre. Consulte el doctor de su estudiante sobre las vacunas para la gripe y la tos ferina. Las muletas en la escuela requieren una nota del medico indicando la razón y la cantidad de tiempo. Sin esa documen-tación, su estudiante no puede estar en la escuela con muletas. Espero trabajar con ustedes y sus estu-diantes para mantenerlos saludables y contentos.

Preestreno de las Artes Escénicas

L a escuela Samohi tiene uno de los mejores programas de Artes Escénicas en la nación. Muchos de nuestros estudiantes han parti-

La Banda de Marcha de Samohi ha estado entreteniendo al público en los juegos de fútbol americano, al igual que en concursos de funciones por todo el sur californiano. La Banda de Conci-erto tiene un concierto nuevo del Día de las Brujas (Halloween) el viernes, 29 de octubre a las 7 p.m. en Barnum Hall. ¡Comience su fin de semana del Día de las Brujas con una divertida noche de música espantosa!
