MARY AND FREEDOM...(Continued from Cover Page)

without reluctantly succumbing to the vile pressures of a male-biased society? Do they have the freedom to deliver and celebrate the birth of a girl child with the same joy that may accompany the birth of a boy? “It's changing”, you may say, and yet our beloved nation still has a skewed female-male ratio of 940:1000.

This issue of the Vashi Vision includes an article on Parents Day the central personage: Mary is the ideal girl child and the ideal mother. And this brings us to the feast of the Assumption because the significance of this solemn feast can truly be understood in the context of her role as a girl and as a mother. Mary, who had ideal parents in St. Ann and St. Joaquim (no wonder their feast is celebrated as Parents Day!), comes across as the epitome of loving and supportive patience. Having been nurtured in the right values, this sixteen year old was able to take the immediate decision to obey God's command when she said, “Be it done unto me according to thy will”. To me, who even now cannot resist the temptation to try to write the script of my own life, Mary's total surrender at the tender and normally rebellious age of sixteen, is a b s o l u t e l y a w e - i n s p i r i n g .

Completely detached from desires and their accompanying fears, Mary could experience a true and unfettered freedom.

But even this freedom, like all freedom, comes at a price —Responsibility. I think what Nelson Mandela said in a different context is pertinent here: “For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others”. That is the responsibility of all free people. And Mary calmly bore the burden of her responsibility and did what she ought to have done right from giving birth to

and nurturing the son of God, to walking the distance to visit her cousin Elizabeth, to saving a wedding host from embarrassment at Cana, to watching her son die a common criminal's death on the cross. Her unwavering faith in and respect for her son's decisions gave her the strength to endure his journey of suffering. And therefore, it is but fitting that our wondrous Mother Mary, free from original sin and from personal sin, should experience the crowning glory of her freedom, her victorious triumph over death –her assumption into heaven body and soul.

- GEORGE THOMAS

No! Not again!! One more note on protecting the environment and conservation of natural resources. This is the feeling one gets when environment and environment related issues are spoken about. No. I'd like to share how amused I am to find intelligent and educated people of Mumbai being taken for a royal ride by the powers that be. No pun intended. The drive or ride on the city road is nothing less than a roller coaster ride. Probably people fear to complain lest the Authorities erect Toll Plaza at road junctions and ask them to pay up for the free bumpy ride over the pot holes. There are chances that Municipal Corporations will double up as sole Amusement and water sports providers and shut down Essel World and like industries. The Councilors can also avail of a foreign trip; I mean an Educational Exchange tour to explain to their counterparts: “What an idea! We provide dual advantage to our citizens of travelling to and fro their place of work laced with the thrill and excitement of an amusement park”.

God blessed Adam and Eve and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it, and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth” – Genesis 1:28.This also implied proper environmental stewardship. Has man really cared to be a good steward? No, he has failed miserably. Nature hits back with fury. The latest is the tragedy that struck our Country in the North from 14th to 17th June, mainly the State of Uttarakhand which is home to several major and historic Hindu and Sikh pilgrimage sites which left over 5000 people dead and about a hundred thousand stranded. This is proof of humankind's selfishness and indifference to all that nature gives him. Without being concerned of the ecological damage to the environment, several tourist spots, trekking trails and hotels mushroomed to boost the hotel industry and tourism to make a fast buck by taking advantage of the teeming millions who visit these temples each year. Same with our roads, year after year the roads are done up only to break up during the monsoon. We comfort ourselves saying – This time the monsoons were really very heavy. We fail to observe that certain roads are intact. What have we to say about that? Should we blame the rain again? After the Road building contractor has greased the palms of all the persons in the chain, he has barely any money to build the road, and he also to provide for his family.

Despite mans unfaithfulness, God has not disowned man. God has permitted man

to make multifold progress in all spheres such as life expectancy which was just 30 years about 3 centuries ago, is currently nearing 80 years. Cures have been found for most fatal diseases. Famines are unheard of, which on an average occurred 7 times in a century. Through mechanized farming produce of land has increased to 1000 kg of wheat per acre as compared to 150 kg in the 18th century. In the last few years information technology has impacted the entire human race. Alvin Toffler says “Too much change in too short a period of time” and in his book “Future Shock” written in 1970, speaks of how a single wear readymade garment would compete with and dethrone detergents. And it has happened, telegraph services have been laid to rest and sending information through facsimile or through courier service is a thing of the past with cost effective and instant emails taking over.

How do we as a parish fit into this preserving environment scheme? We surely have a part to play – I am reminded of that song - Go and do your part to build Community. A pro-environmental community in the place we live. If we look around there are so many opportunities to be part of this big venture to save the planet for the future by austere usage of natural resources such water, electricity, fuel, recycling of waste, etc. At one of the Community Coordinators meeting, Mr Elias Carvalho shared on how to make money out of waste. He said that envelopes received through mail is normally crumpled and thrown into the dust bin. He suggested that empty envelope be placed with the old newspaper heap and sold. The name on the envelope could be defaced for confidentiality purpose. What a novel way of saving nature! If we are only passionate about preserving nature we could do wonders. Car pooling is another way of reducing the emission of carbon and burden of rising fuel cost. Our parish is blessed with a lot of senior citizen who attend the Sunday Eucharistic celebration with great difficulty unable to get a comfortable means of transport and there are yet others who skip the Sunday Eucharist fearing the trudge of the distance. Can we be sensitive and identity such persons in our cluster who desires to be taken to

church for the Sunday Eucharistic Celebration? So that none are burdened, can we take turns among us to comfortably bring them to and fro? Apart from senior citizens, people hiring auto rickshaws severally as single passenger could join together and save on fuel and money. A Win Win for all particularly the feeling that one has contributed to the green revolution and obeying Gods command to our first parents. Every drop makes an Ocean.

‘ENVIRONMENT’ is it OUR PRIORITY...?

MYSTERY OF SIN

- P. Rufus (Sector 10A)

Beyond the garden of Eden, Sin remains a baffling mystery in God's grand design. It is perhaps more baffling in the realm of spirituality than the origin of the universe is in the realm of physics. Of course, there are many hypotheses and explanations. Fr. Gerry aptly set out in one of his sermons that rather than trying to understand the mind of God, it is easier to get to His heart. I think that's a sensible proposition.

Over the ages, we seem to have developed a love-hate relationship with sin. We have been professing a denouncement of it in the baptismal vows and in their renewals. We have even painted it Satan-black. But it dazzles all the more like designer party wear! There seems to be no easy riddance of it. Even the sacrament of Penance does not seem to help. And the human struggle with sin continues, despite the passion of Christ. But what is the struggle about deep within? Could it be the pursuit of an imagined sin-free state that's in stark contrast and conflict with a sinful reality? Benny Hinn once remarked, “The greatest of all miracles is the deliverance from sin.” How apt!

Looking to the gospels, I have wondered at the conversion of the most sinful. St. Paul's conversion could have been effected by a direct calling by Christ. But I am more impressed by the scene where Jesus was an invitee at the house of Simon the Pharisee. A lecherous woman shows up, walks over to Jesus as others look on and pass snide remarks. She says nothing but kneels, bends over the feet of Jesus, weeps over them and wipes them with her hair. In the first place, she must have had some guts to appear in that gathering of people. Even while Jesus is commenting about what she is doing, the woman silently continues with both the anointment of Jesus and her deliverance from sin.

As with this woman, and others who were delivered, one can safely assume that they never went back to

their sinful ways. And there were no confessions or baptismal vows then! Yet, how true the contrition, and how complete the deliverance!

How could it have happened? Is there a different approach in dealing with the Mystery of Sin? The standard approach has been labeling it as 'evil' with the consequences of hell fire. I wonder whether fear is the key. It hasn't worked too well. Because while the (sinful) acts are alluring, there is no point in denouncing their label. It's like trying to leave one's shadow. Desire is too strong a force to contain; so one keeps caving in. And there is always the sacrament of Penance to sort of reset the sin counter—repeatedly.

Another approach has been a type of contemplation on Christ's passion as the consequence of one's sins. I am not sure whether fighting the temptation of sin out of pity for Christ is the way out. Even in the way of the cross, Christ exhorted the wailing women not to weep for Him but for their sins. Astoundingly, this advice seems like a retrospective pointer to the weeping woman at Simon's house—she just wept her sins over the feet of Jesus! Well before His suffering!

Therefore, it appears to me that the key to deliverance may be something else. Like taking a good look at sin. Not thinking about it, labeling it, denouncing it or fighting it, But rather, observing it with complete attention in God's Love. Perhaps then, sin will reveal the true nature beneath its glamour. And bring about a transformational contrition leading to deliverance from sin—for good. Not out of fear of hell fire, but because it's a

denial of God's Love. If the real pain of this denial is acutely felt at heart, rather than imagined by mind, sin would cease to be both a mystery and reality. Such painful contrition can then transform the sacrament of Penance into joyful deliverance from sin. It's this miracle of del iverance that must have happened to the weeping woman in Simon's house.

- Sr SHARMILA FERNANDES SJT, Principal, Sacred Heart High School

The year 1842 the story unfolds in France. It was in the humble hamlet called Cantaous nestled in the foothills of the majestic Pyrenees. A land of strong faith and

courage the Institute of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Tarbes was born.

In the year 1842, six young girls of Cantaous, Marie Dupuy, Dominiquette Barrere, Blandine Barrere, Jeanne Duffo, Eulalie Barrere and Marie Barrere, individually had a deep inner experience of the love of

the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Each one felt drawn into the loving communion of the Holy Trinity. They were filled with deep joy which only Gods love can give. This joy was so vibrant that they were drawn to share it with one another. All six of them had the same experience of God's love. This

sharing of love bound our six young girls together in a loving community.

The strange fact about our beginning is that our Foundresses were urged to become religious not by any external force, nor advice or invitation from outside. The urge came from within them, from the Holy Spirit Himself. It was on August 14th, 1843 their community was inaugurated at the time of Vespers on the eve of the feast of the Assumption of Mother Mary. Therefore, it is on August 15th that the Institution solemnly celebrates the anniversary of its foundation. This day was marked by the stamp of poverty. Each young girl brought with her a loaf of bread and a basket of plums. That was the first meal of our Foundresses! They shared this meal on the steps of the staircase leading to the attic. Yes indeed life in our SJT community began on the 15th August 1843 in poverty, simplicity, love and Joy.

But a community without a superior was a paradox. At Bishop's house Father Laurence was watching closely a young lady in whom he

recognised a wonderful soul, full of the desire to serve God. She was blessed with a mature mind, a sound judgement and a natural aptitude for teaching. Fr. Laurence entrusted the care of the little community to Marie Des Anges who became the first mother General of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Tarbes. The sisters were all very happy to have this motherly figure to guide them. She gave her self-heart and soul to her task from the very first moment, she was filled with the happiness of having found her true vocation.

All along the source of divine light guided the young sisters as they took on their charism to contemplate, to live, to build communion. The growth in numbers and quality was almost immediate. The growth of the mustard seed sown in Cantaous in 1843 grows into a big tree. The six religious of 1842 became eight hundred in 1888. In 1889 the Congregation had 140 houses.

The branches of this SJT tree extended across the continents like England, Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, Kenya, Mexico, Malawi, Peru, Venezuela, Uganda, Austria, and as far as India, this prosperity was gained at a price. Today sisters sow the seeds of universal value based education, involved in health ministry with poor

people in North India and in other parts of India, AIDS centres, servers Leprosy patients, have community colleges for young women. All this was secured at the cost of incessant difficulties and crucifying trials, which is the hallmark of God.

OUR CHARISM;“Rooted in love of the Father, The Son and

The Holy Spirit, we are called together, to be for others, to live and build Communion in our communities and in the world.”

OUR VISION;Rooted in our Charism of Communion we

the Sisters of St.Joseph of Tarbes radically share in the vision and mission of Jesus.

tested his hypothesis.

Q: Why did the atheist throw her watch out the window? A: She wanted to see if it was designed intelligently enough to evolve into a bird.

- MICHAEL DESOUZA, Sector-8

… I know what I'm doing, okay. Oh ya, you do- no wonder the grades of studies and of life are going lower and lower. I will no longer be there to guide you, so make the best use of life now. Oh my God. Not

another sermon. I had enough with the priest. Mom are you listening. Just leave her alone, she'll learn in due course. Honey, it's already too late. The line has been crossed. It's over. You're finished and she's completely finished.

I'm reminded of Mary's plight asking Jesus. Why have you done this to us? Your father and I are worried looking for you. Why, says Jesus. Don't you know I have to be with my father's business? O yeah- which business. Are you booking orders for the furniture? Instead of talking here, help Joseph your dad in the Carpentry work, where we can sell and make a living. A new awakening of heart and mind began. Jesus finally goes and lives under their authority, obeying them and he grew in wisdom, stature and in favor with God and man. This beautiful family grew in love and concern for one another and so it became a model for our family.

St. Paul says children should be dutiful and beautiful to their parents- for obedience brings long, happy and prosperous lives. My parents were poor, illiterate, simple, honest and oh my, very strict, disciplined, hardworking where the Eucharist and prayer life at home was a must. Many times I was caned, slapped and foot ruled if I did anything out of the ordinary where genuine tears rolled down only to hear- “I don't want those crocodile tears. The red marks were so visible that my friends taunted me in school.

My Mum often said,” without a rich heart of faith, kindness, simplicity, cheerfulness and dedication, Michael, wealth is only an ugly beggar. My advice to children. Don't forget your parents for they create jobs of different kinds for you. Take it or leave it. They don't give you charity. What jobs? First on the list, they teach you holiness, Christ-like values, love and concern- so

you can become a good Christian. They teach you various types of dishes, the food you eat- so you are a cook. They teach you to clean and tidy yourself, your room, your home- so you are a HOUSEKEEPER. They help you in your studies; educate you in the spiritual and career world- so you are a PREACHER and TEACHER. They serve you food on the table, starters, meals and desserts- so you are a STEWARD. When sick, forgetting their sleep, they look after your Medicare and health- so you are a NURSE and DOCTOR. Helping you purchase the things you like to wear, eat and enjoy- So you are a SHOPPER. Teaching you to save and not be a spendthrift. - So you are a BANKER.

The course of life never ends and it is freely given by our parents. It is a hard grind but with Christ you learn to enjoy. For if you have built a spiritual life for yourself, everything else follows. Paul tells parents never drive your children to resentment, don't shove

and push them to the wall, give them freedom but correct, guide, inspire and whatever you do will be rewarded. Daddies should be dignified, moderate, no vice, sound in faith, love and constancy. Mummies no scandal mongering, no habitual drinking but good and religious.

Parents are beyond the price of pearls says the book of proverbs. Charm is deceitful, beauty empty but praises the parents who are

wise, who give their share of joys and sorrows to their children who in turn learn the lessons of life. Some say children become what their parents are. Christ says,” you shall know them by their fruits. Remembering my parents, the words of psalmist (in my favourite hymn) comes to mind. Put yourself for the deer and your parents and God for the word you- as a dear that pants for water, so my soul longs after you. You alone are my hearts' desire and I long to worship you.

Praise and thank the Lord for parents are real jewels in the crown of our lives. This is the alchemy of happiness in pure from. Some day you will know. They will fill our hearts with a song. Our lives with wonderful dreams. And our days with happy memories. God Bless all you wonderful parents.

Dear friends, Friendship day has gone by but when was the last time you spoke to the Lord like a friend? We always keep asking & complaining to our God. Have we tried talking to him like we would talk to our

best friends?Let me share with you a small story on this thought I

heard when I was a little kidThere was a young boy called Johnny and he studied

in 4th STD. He was loner and always kept to himself due to this quite behavior he never could make friends and was often bullied by his classmates. He was good in his studies no doubt, but never really connected with any of his classmates. He became the popular guy among teachers, who tried their best to get him to interact with others, but Johnny was unique! He would always wait for the school to end and run in the lane adjacent to the school.

One day his teacher happened to notice him running fast towards the lane and she decided to follow him. The lane was a connecting road to a small chapel, where passersby would usually light candles, offer flowers and quick prays.

The teacher was confused as there seemed no other exit other than the chapel and Johnny was out of sight. She decided to enter the chapel to have a quick look and to her surprise she found Johnny talking to the statue of infant Jesus. Her eyes were filled with tears and she silently waited outside to talk to Johnny.

When Johnny came out she asked him various questions but Johnny told her “Jesus is my special best Friend because he always has time for me. I can talk to him at any time. I can talk to him in any place. No one cares for me like Jesus. He tells me to be strong and he will take care of everything. He wants me to come to him and tell him everything that concerns me; hence I

eagerly wait for the school bell to ring”

Dear friends, Let me conclude with a verse from John 15:13 that says "Greater love has no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends" which best friend on earth can ever do it for you? Next time you kneel to pray or sing praises to him think about the song we learnt as kids but fail to act on it “what a friend we have in Jesus all our sins and grief's to bear”. Let's try to connect with him daily and build a beautiful, unique relationship like Johnny.

WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS!

WIf he begins his mass on time, his watch is fast,

WIf he preaches too long, he makes people bored,

WIf his homily is short, he is unprepared.

WIf he owns a car, he is luxurious,

WIf he does not own one, he does not go with the

times,

WIf he goes out to visit families, he is always out,

WIf he does not he has no time for them,

WIf he asks for a donation, he is a money-maker,

WIf he does not ask for one, he is too proud and

lazy.

WIf he takes time in confession, he is too slow,

WIf he makes it fast, he has no time for his

penitents.

WIf he renovates the Church, he throws away

money,

WIf he does not do it, he allows everything to rot

away.

WIf he is with old ones, he is old fashioned,

WIf he is with the youth, he forgets the old.

WIf he is seen with the women he is a feminist,

WIf he goes with men, he is a vagabond.

WIf he is young, he has no

WIf he is old, he should retire,

The world youth day (WYD) is an international meeting of young people with the Pope. The event which is the largest youth event in the world lasts for a week and attracts millions of youth from all over the

world. This year the venue for the WYD is Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. There is a lot of excitement in the Samba nation as it is also Pope Francis's first WYD.

Mumbai had its own 'Diocesan World Youth Day' celebration at St Andrew's college, Bandra on 14th July in true Mumbai catholic youth style. What a show the youth put up! It all started with the WYD theme song by the Mulund youth choir which loosened us up. This was followed by the opening march with the national flags of the previous WYD venues.

Bishop John Rodrigues then shared a few of his thoughts about the youth and the work put in by everyone. There were some amazing performances by the youth which kept us glued to our seats. These included a beautiful prayer dance in Portuguese by the students of Sophia College, a presentation by the members of 'Jesus youth', a folk dance, a performance of capoeira (a Brazilian martial art form which is a fusion of dance, music and martial arts), etc. The host St

Andrew's put up an amazing skit. Cardinal Oswald Gracias graced the occasion. He addressed the youth and answered some of the questions raised by them. The event ended with a rocking performance by the gospel band 'By Grace' which left the audience spellbound.

We hope we'll have more representatives from Vashi attending World youth day in the future. It will surely be an experience of a lifetime!

WORLD YOUTH DAY, MUMBAI ISHTYLE!

- MANI NADAR, Sector-9

Human beings are social animals and hence we need to grow both physically, spiritually and mentally through constant interaction with the fellow members in their community. In order to enhance our social

qualities, every organization /association members need to undergo training. Hence, a training programme for PPC members was planned on Sun, 14th July at Don Bosco School – Nerul on 14th July.

The programme was planned so that it doubles as a mini outing and to get to know each other.

The training programme was conducted by Fr. Mario Mendes- Director for “Centre for Social Action”.It was a two hour session filled with Joyful learning and thoughtful interaction.

The theme of the session was “ Faith in Action”. Fr. Mario Mendes emphas ized the importance of the Shepherd and his flock. Just as the Shepherd must know the smell of the sheep, we too should be readily available to the needs and concerns of our community, thus

offering ourselves as a living sacrifice unto the Lord. Romans Chpt 12: 1-2.

Fr. Mario made us to understand,1) PPC operational procedures2) Role of Parish Council Members3) Consensus in the decision making4) Servant LeadershipThe session covered various aspects of human

values, such as – Holiness, Listening, Visitation, solidarity, Human Dignity, Personnel development, Outreach, Spiritual Growth etc.

The session included group discussions and sharing by each PPC member on various issues discussed in the session.

After the conclusion of the Training Session, our monthly PPC meeting was held to discuss and finalise important issues, followed by sumptuous lunch arranged by the Parish team.

It was a session worth attending. A big thank-you to the Parish team and especially Fr. Mario Mendes for your valuable time, knowledge and efforts. We will definitely strive to become the Shepherd to the sheep.

On Sunday the 9th of June, the Church “Rang Out With Joy and Glory”, and the congregation at the 6.00 p.m. Mass were uplifted to new heights, enraptured with a feast of resounding hymns – all were new. The participants who took part in the choir sang with enthusiasm and gusto – no mistakes. The result was exhilarating and at the end of the last hymn

leading us to “Glory Land” even the heavens opened up in appreciation and exultation. We did say expect more didn't we – will say it again – that “We Promise”.

The Feast of our patron, Saint Peter of the SCC ofSector-16 & 16A was celebrated on 29th June, 2013. The celebrations started with a Feast Mass celebrated by Fr. Gerry with active participation of members of our

Sector, which was followed by a get together in the Church Conference Hall. Fr. Gerry graced the occasion with a short prayer. He also interacted with every member in our Sector. Mrs. Matilda Lobo, our PPC Member thanked Fr. Gerry for his presence and she also entertained us with her hilarious jokes. She also thanked our spiritual guide, Fr. Rafael for his almost 100% presence at all the community meetings and his constant guidance throughout the year. Two S.S.C students, Rachel Rebello& Neil Sequeira were also felicitated for outstanding performance in S.S.C Exams. Small kiddies were also given gifts as a token of appreciation. The most important thing which struck me was the presence of the members of St. George's

community from Turbhe who were invited for this get-together. They were introduced to us by Mr. Desmond Rowe and we all interacted with them. This was a first of its kind initiative by any SCC in the parish and it was based on the theme “Share your happiness with others”

Soon after this, delicious chocolate cake, vegetable cutlet and tomato soup was served. This was followed by a small game for the elders. People enthusiastically came forward for the Spot Prizes and we all really enjoyed it. We also played a Housie Game and a special “ Rock of the Day” Award was given to Mr. Stanislaus Manuel the “Star of the Day” prize was given to Mrs. Alzira Rowe. Delicious Chicken Biryani & Vegetable Biryani was served soon after this. This wonderful evening came to an end and we all said goodbye to each other. Every person likes celebrations because it gives us enjoyable and memorable moments of being-together and this day was one of the most exciting days for us. We are thankful to all our dear animators along with PPC Member who have organized this event selflessly and for making it a grand success!

CELEBRATING SAINT PETER'S FEAST IN THE COMMUNITY

- ETHAN DO REGO, Sector 28

The Assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heaven, also known as The Assumption, according to the Roman belief was the bodily taking up of the Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her earthly life. The

Assumption completes God's work in her. The Assumption is God's crowning of His work as Mary ends her earthly life and enters eternity. The feast turns our eyes in that direction, where we will follow when our earthly life is over. The Assumption is a major feast day, which is celebrated on August 15. The feast is also marked as a Holy Day of Obligation.

The Assumption is important to many Catholic and Orthodox Christians as the Virgin Mary's heavenly birthday (the day that Mary was received into Heaven). Her acceptance into the glory of Heaven is seen by them as the symbol of the promise made by Jesus to all enduring Christians that they too will be received into paradise.

In every country the feast is celebrated in different ways. Colorful processions through the streets and firework displays mark the celebration of the Feast of the Assumption in Italy. In Sicily and rural areas outside Rome, a bowing procession is the day's main event. A statue of the Virgin Mary is carried through the town to a ceremonial arch of flowers, where a group of people holding a statue of Christ awaits her arrival. Both statues are inclined toward each other three times, and then the Christ figure precedes the figure of Mary back to the parish church for a special benediction. In Goa the feast is celebrated by making a traditional sweet “patoyo” using finely ground steamed Goan rice, in turmeric leaves, stuffed with jaggery and coconut.

In India Independence day is also celebrated on 15th August commemorating the nation's independence from British rule on 15 August 1947. India attained freedom following an independence movement noted for largely nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience.

26th July celebrated as Parents Day, the feast day of Saints Joaquim and Anne, parents of our Blessed Virgin Mary is also an occasion to honor parents for their sacrifice and dedication towards the well being of

their children. God is omnipresent in guiding every family and to bind them in love and understanding. Our parish celebrated Parents Day on Saturday, 27th July at the Sacred Heart School Hall beginning at 6 pm with the Eucharistic celebration. The Celebrant Fr Raphael, preached a Spirit filled homily spelling out seven ways of bringing up children which was an eye opener for Parents to implement in their lives.

Thereafter the Youth Group took charge of entertaining the Parents in a unique manner, with the theme “Idiot Box”. The program was interspersed with a lot of spot prizes being given away, such as for the woman with the most pierced ear (which my wife Tracy won hands down and she was very pleased), maximum colors in a saree, the oldest married couple, etc. The gathering was grouped according to the white, green, red and purple color bands given to each of them as they entered the hall at the start. Each group was given a blank sheet

of paper for an Idiot Box Quiz contest, and believe me our parishioners knew more than the Channel Owners/Producers of the serial. Fr Gerry, Srs Sharmila, Nithya and Rose mingled and exchanged greetings with families which really made a difference and bought smiles on everyone's face. 10 married couples participated in a musical chair with a difference which saw the wives rushing to their respective husbands to fetch belts, wallets, coins, rings, pen as directed with the winners receiving the prize at the hands of Fr Gerry.

There was so much of fun and laughter in the true community spirit with the clapping echoing in the hall. The gathering was so engrossed that they lost track of time and it was past dinner time. It was the aroma of the food that rang the bell for the grace before meals and then to sumptuous dinner. The food was delicious and hats off to the caterers who did a wonderful job to satisfy all who attended the program. On behalf of all the parents, I take pleasure in thanking the Parish

Fathers, the Youth who were the movers and shakers of the evening, animators, caterers and all those who contributed to make it an evening to cherish. Last, but not the least, thanks to all the parents who attended and made the celebration a grand success. God Bless!

SACRED HEART PARISH - CELEBRATES PARENTS DAY

ACTIVITIES OF St PAUL’S SMALL CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY

Children from the Community Visit

Homes to Greet ParentsThe Catholic Church celebrated the feast of Saints

Joaquim and Anne, parents of Our Mother Mary as Parents Day. Our Archdiocese celebrates “Parents Day” on 26th July every year. This day we especially remember and pray for our parents and grandparents, who unceasingly support, love, care for us and understand our needs without us expressing them. After all, we owe a lot to our parents for making us the person we are today.

Parents or Elders in the family are definitely an asset. It is they who can impart the much needed ethical values and code of conduct in the younger generation. However, we see in today's fast paced life, our parents are often neglected especially the old, sick and bedridden parents and grandparents. The date was set - Sunday, 28th July 2013. To appreciate and reciprocate the love & affection to our parents in a small way, some animators, members and ever enthusiastic youth of St. Paul community (Sectors 11, 12, 28 & 29) decided to

take some time off and visit those homes where there were senior citizens and/or bed ridden parents and present them with a small gesture, thus bringing a smile on their face. It was decided to present them with hand-made greeting cards, a piece of cake and a rose – all signifying love and concern!

The talented youth of our community (Steffi Menezes, Kimberley Rowe and Sonali Vaidya) made beautiful cards for the parents which were personally handwritten by the children/members of the community. It is always amazing to see so much talent in the community which is usually discovered only at times of such events. The members divided themselves into 4 groups each representing sectors 11, 12, 28 & 29. Each group visited 4 families in each sector.

The response received was overwhelming. A total of around 15 families were covered in a span of 4-5 hours. The families were moved as they welcomed the volunteers to their homes and appreciated their kind gesture when they were presented with the greeting

card, cake and the rose. Many of these parishioners are living alone with their children being abroad and visiting them once in a while. In certain homes having children around, it was more appropriate for the children to present their parents with the cake, card and rose and it was really heartening to see the response and smiles on the faces of all the family members.

Overall, it was a very satisfying and heartfelt experience to be one with the “young” and “not so young” members of our community. Last but not the least, special thanks to everybody who contributed in any small way and helped this day to be happening one.

Rite of Acceptance

And Felicitation of StudentsSunday 28th July 2013 will be marked as a red letter

day for St. Paul's community since we had three events on the same day – Parents day and the Rite of acceptance. We also received a good turnout for these events inspite of the heavy rains.

The function was held at the residence of Mr. & Mrs. Dominic, the community of St. Paul (Sector 11, 12, 28 and 29) represented by the animators, youth, parents, god parents and community members welcomed in their midst the First Holy C o m m u n i o n a n d C o n f i r m a t i o n Cand ida te s . I t was heartening to see that more than 40 community members present to witness the Rite of a c c e p t a n c e i n t h e community. There are 2 chi ldren Firs t Holy Communion in April-May 2014 and 8 youth receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation around Feb 2014. The prayer service was led by our Spiritual Director Fr. Raphael Mordom who took us through the Rite of Acceptance to these Candidates and explained us the purpose of having the prayer service.

All of us welcomed these candidates into the Community with a symbolic and meaningful Prayer Service which was on lines as prescribed by theDiocesan Catechetical Centre. Each of the First Holy communicants was presented with a rose and a bookmark with the words “Prepare to sit at the Lord's table” in the shape of a Ciborium with their name on it. In the same way, the Confirmation candidates were presented with a rose and a bookmark with the words “Sent forth in Spirit” in the shape of a flame with their name on it. Then followed the blessing rite wherein

each community member individually blessed these candidates as the community members sang a hymn to our Mother.

Along with the Rite of acceptance for our First Holy Communion and Confirmation Candidates, we also had a felicitation ceremony of all students of our community who cleared their SSC, HSC, graduate, post graduate and other examinations in the academic year of 2012-2013.

Since it was the first time that such an event was organised at the community level it definitely required a lot of time, co-ordination and efforts on part of the animators to get in touch with the students, getting the data on their percentages at the respective examinations, arranging for the trophies/ medals and certificates, managing the logistics and organising the event. We had 13 prize winners who were facilitated for excelling in the field of academics namely SSC, HSC, B.E, MBA, LLB and CFP etc. Fr. Raphael and Aunty Jane were kind enough to do the honours and present

the students scoring 75% and above with trophies and certificates and those scoring less than 75% with a medal and a certificate. These trophies/medals and certificates were

specially customised to have the St. Paul 's community logo and motto “I can do all things t h r o u g h H i m w h o strengthens me” (Phil 4:13).

I t w a s r e a l l y heartening to see parents excited and happy as their children were being

facilitated. Although all students have done brilliantly and excelled in their field of education, a special mention needs to go to Sonali Vaidya for excelling the SSC

examination with 93% and also being the topper at the Sacred Heart Parish level.

Thereafter, we had fellowship with refreshments served by the Dominic family and discussed our plans for future events in community. We the members of St Paul's community felt truly blessed and we are deeply grateful to the Dominic family for lending their home for this service. We request you all to pray for these Candidates so that they may live and grow according to God's plan in their lives and contribute to his ministry by using their talents for his Church. Special thanks to the core team, the animators and the youth of St. Paul's community, for running around and getting their act together in organising the felicitation ceremony.

Confirmation Day - 2nd February 2013

- ARUNA PINTO, Sector -14

1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of Him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.

Laity Sunday is a day on which we honor all those who serve the church, i.e. people who do not have the priestly responsibilities of ordained clergy. It offers a chance for members of all ages to pause and consider their own unique calling to a particular ministry.

A seminar on Lay Leadership in the Church and Society was conducted on Laity Sunday, June 23, by the Office for Lay Collaboration in Ministry (OLCM), at St. Mary's ICSE School Auditorium, Mazgaon. The event was presided over by Bishop-Elect Dominic Savio Fernandes, who is in charge of lay ministries. The aim of the seminar was to help Catholics commit themselves to living in a spirit of faith and renewal as part of their role in evangelisation.

Six members of our parish attended the programme. We joined the parishioners of Panvel & Sanpada, who had arranged a bus. We started off with a prayer, then introduced ourselves and from thereon, there was not a dull moment in the entire journey as everyone enjoyed in the singing. We reached at 3:45p.m. and were

treated to a hot cup of tea and biscuits. We then headed to the registration counter. Approximately 800+ people attended the seminar from various parishes of Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

The first part of the programme introduced us to heads of various Commissions, Associations and Cells of the Archdiocese as well as their mission, undertakings and training courses offered. This was neatly demonstrated by stalls displaying banners and PowerPoint presentations for each division of cell.

We were then led to the auditorium for the second part of the event. The Director of OLCM, Fr. Aniceto Pereira explained the significance of and want for educating lay ministers. This was then followed by a Talk Show hosted by Fr. Nigel Barrett, who questioned the different Commissions on topics related to their

achievements, hurdles and new paths for involvement.

There was a short prayer service which conveyed the message of how we can in our own little ways be a part of evangelising. The programme ended with a vote of thanks.

All in all it was a good experience and has taught me, my responsibility as a member of the church. After all, when anyone joins the church, we as members also reaffirm our vows to support it by our prayers, our presence, our gifts and our service.

While treks with friends have always been fun but the one organized by the youth of Sacred Heart was on another level of experience, few of us including me have never been to Lohagad fort, Lonavala

before, so this journey had a lot of surprises and fun in store for each of us.

We started our journey on 7th of July 2013 around 7.30 a.m after a final roll call. It took about an hour and half to get there, but time flew by with the jokes, songs and games. Finally when we reached, we were welcomed by gentle drizzles, more like a blessing to embark on our journey.

The Big gang (57) of us were split into four groups with Fr Baptist taking lead. The road to the top was not easy, and after walking up a muddy road for about 20 minutes I was already tired. I realised how much stamina one needs for a trek.

As we kept climbing upwards we finally hit a concrete road, what bliss! But this joy was short lived as now the actual trek began...

...We had to take the narrow pathway up the hill through the forest. Branches of trees kept hitting me & others in the face and we all had to be careful where we put our foot as the path was so slippery that one wrong step and we would have a good fall. As we made our way through the woods, we reached a waterfall. To my surprise, the only way to get to the top was by climbing the waterfall. I was unsure at first as I had never climbed a waterfall before and with the rains I was a little scared, but I put my fears aside and took that first step forward. The climb was made so much easier with the youth

around giving you the sense of security. Climbing the water fall was not an easy task but as I made it half way I turned around and the scenery was amazing and worth the climb.

As we scaled the waterfall and got higher we noticed the fog on top. Eagerly completing the climb we were greeted by an open green meadow that awaited us. It was an amazing sight and the breeze on top was truly delightful. Now at the top I could see the forest that I came through, the muddy road, the village, the waterfall, it had been an amazing climb and the view of the horizon was simply spectacular.

They say after all hard work deserves some treat! We found a nice little spot where we all sat and treated ourselves with delicious snacks.

After everyone had their lunch and got their breath back we took a group photo and then we played a game. A popular game called 'Hole in the wall' It was a great sight to see how each team tried it's best at the game (some fell in the mud, but had no complaints) After the game we realized that we had to make our way down again. Coming down from the waterfall was a little tricky, but there was no rush as everyone was slow, careful and helped anyone who found it difficult. Once we were down, we again feasted on some roasted corn, tea, vada pav and other snacks. Finally everyone was in the bus and a head count was taken. We set out to make our way back to Vashi. All drained, most of us dozed off in the bus or were listening to music. When I was walking back home from church I recalled the climb, the view, the fun, the effort it took to rise to the top. It was absolutely worth it! I will cherish every step of it and lastly “One of the best treks organized”.

How God Answers ...read this to believe... Wonderful Story.

Dr. Ahmed, a well-known doctor, was once on his way to an important medical conference in another city where-in he was going to be granted an award for medical research he had recently done. He was very excited to attend the conference and was desperate to reach as soon as possible. He had worked long and hard on his research and felt his efforts deserved the award he was about to obtain.

However, two hours after the plane took off, the pilot announced that there was a problem with the plane and that they were going to make an emergency landing at the nearest airport. Afraid that he wouldn't make it in time for the conference, Dr. Ahmed immediately went to the help desk as soon as the plane landed and explained to the woman at the desk that he was expected to be at a very important conference and that he needed to know the immediate next flight to his destination.

She told him that there was nothing she could do to help him as there wouldn't be another flight to his destination for another ten hours; but suggested he rent a car and drive down to the city as it was only four hours away.

Having no other choice, he agreed to the idea despite his hatred for driving long distances. Dr. Ahmed rented a car and started his journey. However, soon after he left, the weather suddenly changed and a heavy storm began the pouring rain made it very difficult for him to see and he missed a turn he was supposed to take. After two hours of driving. He was convinced he was lost. Driving in the heavy rain on a deserted road, feeling hungry and tired. He frantically began to look for any sign of civilization. After some time,he finally came across a small tattered house. Desperate, he got out of the car and knocked on the door.

An old woman opened the door for him. He explained his situation and asked if he could use her telephone. She told him that she didn't have a phone or electricity but that he was welcome to come in for some food and something warm to drink. As he had completely lost his way and that it would take him some time to get back on the right road, hungry, wet and exhausted, the doctor accepted her kind offer and walked in.

The woman told him to help himself to some food and hot tea on the table and then excused herself to finish her prayers.

Sitting on the table sipping his tea,the doctor watched the woman in the dim light of the candles as she prayed next to what appeared to be a small baby crib. Every time she finished a prayer, she would start another one. Feeling that the woman might be in need of help, the doctor seized the opportunity to speak as soon as she finished her prayers and told her that he hoped God would answer her prayers.

He then said that he noticed that she had been making a lot of prayers and asked if there was something she needed that he could get for her or help

her with. The woman smiled and said that God had answered all her prayers except for one. She

said she didn't know why God hadn't answered this specific prayer yet but

perhaps it was because of her weak faith.

The doctor asked if she didn't mind telling him what she needed. Nodding her head in

approval, she said that the child in the crib was her grandson and that both

his parents had recently died in a car accident. She said that the child had a very

rare type of cancer and that all the doctors she had seen were unable to treat him.She also said that she had been told that there was a

doctor who specialized in the type of cancer her grandson had, but there was no way for her to get to this doctor as he lived very far from her; so she has been spending her days and nights praying to god to help her find a way to get to Dr. Ahmed, the doctor who could treat her grandson.

Upon hearing her words the doctor said, 'God is Great. There was a malfunction in the plane, a thunderstorm hit, and i lost my way; and all of this happened because God did not just answer your prayer by helping you find a way to get to Dr.Ahmed, but he brought Dr. Ahmed to your house. I am Dr. Ahmed.

With tears streaming down her cheeks, the woman raised her hands prayed

" Oh God how great and merciful you are!"Simply have faith as big as a mustard seed ..God will answer your prayer.
