    Captains Message

Welcome to a cold, early winter Saturday atKelburn Park. For the first time this seasonwe have a big threeway at Kelburn Park, withthree big games of football. As you can seefrom the cover photo, the dugouts are readyand the ropes are in place for what promisesto be a good weekend of football.

First up is the Gossies against Seatoun. TheGossies are looking for a win to move back upthe table in Capital 1, while Seatoun will behoping for a repeat of their result here lastyear when they snuck a win when we wereboth playing in Capital 2.

We welcome Miramar Rangers Reserves toKP for todays main game. Miramar is un-doubtedly the most successful club in Wel-lington over the last couple of decades (sorryWests), and this will be a real test of our cre-dentials for Capital Premier.

Tomorrow it is the Womens turn, as the

womens first team welcomes Marist. Seemslike only yesterday we beat them 5-0 (actuallyit was two weeks ago), but thanks to the

scheduling weface them again, looking to buildon the strongperformancelast week. Weconceded a lategoal againstBrooklyn North-ern United, go-ing down 2-1 in a very close match, against ateam that had been playing Central League in2012.

Off the field, EFTPOS is now available in theclubrooms and more events are coming soon.So come on down, because even if the weath-ers bad therell still be a warm welcome hereat KP (unless the heaters arent workingagain).

    All the best, Craig

    Capital 1:

    University Gossies 0, Tawa 1Venue: Kelburn Park(12.30pm kick-off, May 18, 2013)

Tawa Reserves scored what transpired tobe the only goal of the match on 15 minutes.

Opening up the Gossies defence with a quickone-two, a Tawa player ran on to finish intothe bottom left corner, albeit amongst strongclaims of offside. The Gossies mounted attackafter attack in the second-half and repeatedlycreated goal-scoring opportunities and evenstruck the bar, but could not find a way to putthe ball into the Tawa net.

The two sides were fairly evenly matched, with Tawa notably offering pace on at-tack. Unfortunately the second loss in a rowsees the Gossies slip away from the upper endof the league table. Albeit, that situation has

been exacerbated by us currently having been

robbed of the win against North Wellingtonover a clerical issue. We are in the process ofappealing the decision.

    Mens Firsts Match Report

    Capital Premier, University 2,

    Olympic 2 (21)Venue: Kelburn Park (2.30pm kick-off,May 18, 2013)

Commencing the match brightly, Universityalmost netted in only the second minute. ADaan Kjartansson cross from the right wasmet in the six-yard box by Matt Wilson, buthis side-footed attempt was blocked by theOlympic Reserves keeper. Dave Hudson thenfed Kjartansson on the right for a shot thatwas blocked by a defender.

Making his first league start for the season

after returning from injury, Ignacio Donovan

was called upon to head away a dangerous

Olympic corner. Five minutes into the game,

Hudson gave University the lead. Receiving a

ball switched from the left-wing by Wilson,

Hudson accelerated into the box and shot

along the ground to the far post, the Olympic

keeper appeared to misjudge the pace of theball which duly slipped through his hands as

    he dived to his right.

Olympic shot over the bar after asking some

defensive questions of University on the break

and keeper Matt Walker had to come and col-

    lect a free-kick.

University extended their lead on 17

minutes. The second corner in a row earned

by Hudson was delivered from the right by

Ben Marsh, Joe Harris propelled the ball goal-

wards and Wilson was on hand to flick

    home.Olympic then headed a free-kick over the

University bar, but the home side was looking

well in control of the contest and comfortable

in possession, and a flowing move involving

Marsh, Wilson, Miles Lloyd and Kjartansson

almost found Hudson arriving in the

box. After Daniel Diggins headed away an

Olympic cross from the left at the near post,

Wilson was played through by Kjartansson on-

ly to be pulled up for a very close offside.

A cross from the left almost found Hudson

and then Donovan played Hudson down the

right and his deflected cross found Wilson

who shot back across the goal. Diggins was

fouled while dealing with an Olympic corner

from the right. Lloyd and Kjartansson linked

up to play Wilson through only for the striker

to again be pulled up for offside, Olympic then

broke and shot narrowly over the bar beforeDonovan released Wilson in the Olympic box

    but he was blocked out.

With one minute remaining in the half, the

visitors got themselves back in the match. A

throw-in from the left was allowed to bounce

in the box and an attacker slid home at the far

    post.

Olympic came out positively in the second

period and Walker had to be fast off his line to

close down an opponent running onto a

    through ball.

On 50 minutes, University received a dou-

ble blow. Mitch Bradley was deemed to have

committed a professional foul when coming

together with an Olympic player arriving on a

dangerous ball in the University penalty box,

Bradley was dismissed and Olympic converted

the penalty into the right side of the goal.

    University reshuffled with Lloyd dropping

into right-back and Hudson being sacrificed

from right-midfield to allow the introduction

of another central midfielder in Aidan Law-

rence. The home side adopted a 4-1-2-2 for-

mation, with the two fullbacks being used as

wing-backs to compensate for the reduction in

    personnel.

Kjartansson and Harris combined to earn a

corner and Wilson was set up for a strike after

a Lawrence intercept, before Walker had to

steer away a shot from the edge of his box that

was bound for the top-right cor-

ner. Kjartansson cut in from the right to shoot

and following a Harris intercept in midfield,

was set up for another run and strike that just

    went past the right-hand upright.

A threatening run down the right by Law-

rence culminated in a cross that just eluded an

attempted diving header from Harris. Walker

then made a crucial save with his knees on a

ball played into players arriving in his box and

following the resulting short corner from the

right, Olympic shot just past the left-hand up-

right, before Diggins was required to block out

for another corner after an Olympic player cut

    in dangerously from the right.

Following the introduction of Calum Ross

for Wilson to add fresh legs in attack, Do-

novan found space but shot to the right of

    goal.

Walker calmly claimed a cross from the

right and then was again fast off his line to

close an Olympic player down and cause him

to shoot to the left of goal. An Olympic attack-

er shot to the right of goal when receiving in

space in the box and then Marsh and Andrew

Staples combined to clear an attack from the

    right.Despite the man disadvantage, University

were battling admirably in defence and deal-

ing with Olympics dangerous repeated at-

    tacks. Lawrence played Kjartansson into

space on the right but his shot went wide be-

fore Diggins cleared the ball from an Olympic

player arriving on the six-yard line and th en

Olympic shot wide again. Soon after Marcos

Gomez was introduced in central midfield for

Joe Harris, Olympic were also reduced to ten

men when one of their players was dismissed

for throwing an elbow after tangling with Do-

    novan in midfield.

In a frenetic end to t he game, the Olympic

keeper had to punch away a dangerous ball

into his box with Lawrences resulting header

across goal being cleared, then Walker saved a

shot from the left out for a corner that Diggins

subsequently headed clear and Olympic re-

turned for a player to shoot over the bar.

Lawrence again delivered well from the

right wing after being played through well by

Donovan and then Kjartansson intercepted an

Olympic player on the edge of his box but the

ball fortuitously popped up for the Olympic

keeper to claim. The Olympic keeper then

made arguably the save of t he game. Having

intercepted the ball advanced in Olympic ter-

ritory on the left wing, Marsh ran on into the

box and steadied himself to strike firmly to-

wards the far post, but the keeper spread him-

self to deflect over and then dealt with the re-

    sulting corner.

Coaches comments:Alas we were left to

once again lament having not killed off a game

in which at 2-0 we looked well in control. The

timing of Olympics first goal proved pivotal as

they came out in the second period with a re-

newed vigour they might not have had if still

two goals behind. That purpose saw them ap-

ply the pressure that ultimately resulted in us

conceding a penalty and losing a player.

While it is frustrating that we let the foot-

hold we had in that first half slip away, the

lads deserve full praise for the way they stuck

admirably to their task when going a mandown. Olympic were attacking with great pur-

pose for much of the second half and yet we

worked extremely hard to compete in defence

and then launch our own counter-attacks.
