The Purpose of Mentoring

To transition the student in, through, and out of college. With an intent to increase awareness, the goal is to retain students through connecting them to academic, business, and community resources.

Most importantly, the intent is to empower students’development through connections with experiencedinstructors, enhancing both their student and graduatelife.

What does the menteeget from being in a

mentoring relationship?

The mentee receives a listening ear, different perspective, and a connecting smile. The mentor is an invaluable resource for encouragement and support.

The mentor benefits from increased problem

solving and interpersonal skills, recognition, and opportunity for success stories.

A mentorship opens the horizons for both parties as networking is a crucial skill and resource in today’s society.

What can be expected?

• To be successful in this effort, it will take a lot of hard work, dedication, and heart.

• Although many standards have been outlined, the mentoring program is a living mechanism that is subject to change.

• Feedback will be the primary drive for change, so don’t be afraid to share your two cents.

• Although flexible, the VSTAR Program will be highly monitored and enforced with a focus on incoming students.

• Precision and accurate reporting is imperative to fine tuning this daring endeavor.

• Be prepared to be amazed.

• Students will receive a classification based on time in school:

– Mentee: 1st phase only– Apprentice: 2nd through 3rd phases– Protégé: 4th phase through GRADUATION!

• The student should be highly involved in the mentoring session and understand the purpose of the meeting.

• Student comments are a way of putting thoughts in a black and white form. Helps students reflect on and articulate feelings.
