Overview1 This document provides the user with step-by-step instructions on how to activate a Phoenix Contact PSI-GPRS/GSM-MODEM/RS232-QB-USA (Order No. 2900059) modem using the Diversenet portal for Virtual Static IP (VSIP) and proving the connection using HyperTerminal.

In many cellular applications there is a need to have access to remote assets at any time. The nature of the cellular infrastructure does not always provide this level of access – devices are typically only accessible after the remote device has connected to a central controller.

Requirements2 The PC must have

an RS-232 connection. −

Phoenix Contact PSI-MODEM-CONF configuration soft- −ware (included on the CD).

After log in or registration, the “Account Summary” 3. page appears. In the left column, click the “Activate new device” link to start the “Activate New Device Wizard.”

In the “Activate New Device Wizard” enter data in the 4. fields that appear. Instructions appear next to each field.

The SIM card number is printed on the outside of the modem housing and on the SIM card inside the modem.

Be sure to select the correct modem. Different countries utilize different network service providers.

If the Host IP address does not appear in the drop-down list, click the “Click here to add a host to the list.” link to enter a new IP address.

The Host IP address is the Public IP address of the device that will be used to access the modem. A public IP address is the address that is used when accessing the internet. This address must be static.

Numerous websites, such as www.whatsmyip.org/, can be used to determine your IP address.

Check with your IT department to define your pubic IP address and if your company uses more then one public IP address to access the internet. If your company uses more then one Public IP address, the computer or device used to access the modem must be configured by the IT department to only use one Public IP address.

Select the Wireless Data PlanFigure 7.

Select the Wireless Data Plan from the drop-down list 8. for the device, and then click the “Next” button.

A variety of data plans exist. Choose the plan based on minutes vs. cost based on expected usage. Data plans can be changed on a monthly basis.

Select SMS Text Message OptionsFigure 8.

If desired, select the SMS plan that will be used for the 9. modem, and then click the “Next” button.

Selection of an SMS plan is optional and not necessary for configuration of VSIP activation. Select 0 from the drop-down list if not desired.

When finished, a summary screen appears to allow 10. review of the selections made.

If all options are correct, click the “Next” button. −

If changes are required, click the “Previous” button −until the screen appears that contains the options that require change. Make the changes and click the “Next” button until complete.

The Service Provider portion of the setup is now complete.

Configuring the Modem for VSIP4 Connect the modem to the PC using a serial 1:1 cable 1. (Order No. 2799474) and install the antenna.

Apply 24 V DC to the modem and power it up. 2.

If the SIM card was removed during portal setup, be sure to reinsert it into the modem before applying power.

Start the “PSI-MODEM-CONFIG” software provided 3. with the modem.

Click the “Read Configuration from PSI-device” button 4.

to upload the configuration file to the PC.

Click the “Edit profile of PSI-device” button 5. to open the “GPRS/GSM Configuration” dialog box.

When finished, click the “OK” button.

Click the “Write configuration to PSI-device” button 7.

to download the configuration to the modem.

Open Internet Explorer (or any other web browser) and 8. enter http://phoenix.diversenet.net in the address field.

Login to the account, if not already logged in. Click 9. the “Account” button, and then click the “View/Search Devices” link at the bottom of the page.

In the search results list, locate the recently added 10. modem enabled for VSIP. Click the “Ready for VSIP” link in the “Status” column to initiate communication with the modem.

The modem must be powered to communicate with the Service Provider. Communication is indicated at the modem by a flashing nEt LED.

When communication with the modem is established, 11. a “Device Details” page appears. Click the “Send the VSIP Config” button to transfer the VSIP configuration to the modem. Click the “OK” button in the confirma-tion popup box to begin the transfer and return to the “Device Summary” page.

The “Device Summary” page will indicate 12. Pending Configuration while the transfer occurs (approxi-mately 10 minutes). When complete, the status will change to Active and the IP address is displayed. This IP address is the VSIP address of the modem and will be used to access the modem from the host device.

The PSI-GPRS/GSM-MODEM/RS232-QB-USA setup and connection to the Diversenet service is complete and com-munication is now possible.

Communication Verification5 A verification of the communication link between the host software and the modem should be performed outside of the host software to ensure proper operation. This is a two-step process. The first step verifies the communication link is working using HyperTerminal® terminal emulation software. The second step verifies communication between the host software and modem using Com Port redirector software.

Other terminal emulation software can be used. These instructions specifically refer-ence the commands and features within HyperTerminal.

If HyperTerminal has not been used, follow the instruc-tions for the initial configuration.

Click the “New” button to create a new connection. 2. Name the connection Serial terminal and select COM1 from the “Connect using:” drop-down list.

Click the “OK” button when complete.

Connect a straight-through RS-232 cable between the 4. DB-9 serial port on the PC and the DB-9 port on the PSI-GPRS/GSM-MODEM/RS232-QB-USA modem.

In the HyperTerminal window, type “AT” and press 5. the <Enter> key. A correct reply from the port should display as OK in the window.

The modem should be configured to echo typed characters (see Figure 10). If not, re-configure the modem.

In the HyperTerminal window, type “AT$DSIP?” and 6. press the <Enter> key. A correct reply from the modem should appear as $DSIP: “172.25.40.211”.1020 and OK in the window.

Start a second session of HyperTerminal and create a 7. connection named Ethernet terminal.

Select 8. tCP/IP (Winsock) from the “Connect using:” drop-down list. The dialog box fields will change to reflect the applicable options.

In the “Host address” and “Port number” fields, enter the values received from Diversenet (see Figure 14). For this example, those values are 10.254.254.3 and 1023.

Click the “OK” button when the configuration is com-9. plete and HyperTerminal will attempt to connect to the modem through the TCP/IP port, which is connected to the modem via the Diversenet portal.

The modem should make some noise and, once connected, a reply from the modem should display as “OK” in the window. HyperTerminal will also indicate the status and length of time of the connection in the status bar at the lower left corner of the window.

As verification of communication, type some text in 10. one HyperTerminal session and it should appear in the the other session.

COM-Port Redirector software for use with VSIP-5.2 enabled PSI-GPRS/GSM-MODEM/RS232-QB-USA.

The COM-Port Redirector software allows the operator to create virtual ports for host applications that only transfer data on serial ports. If this is true of the host application, use the following procedure to confirm setup and commu-nication through the virtual port, the Diversenet portal to the PSI-GPRS/GSM-MODEM/RS232-QB-USA modem.

To obtain a free copy of the COM-Port Redirector software, go to www.phoenixcontact.com and navigate to the Interface section.

Download and install COM-Port Redirector. 1.

In the “RDCfg” dialog box that appears, click the Com 2. Setup” button to open the “Port Setup” dialog box. Click the check box next to the desired virtual COM port(s) and click the “OK” button to return to the “RDCfg” dialog box.

In the “Host” field enter the IP address obtained from 5. the Diversenet portal (see Figure 14). In the “TCPPort” field enter a port number (1023 is typically used). Click the “OK” button to return to the “RDCfg” dialog box.

With COM-Port Redirector configured, HyperTerminal 7. can be used to test communications. See “5.1 Linking the host computer Ethernet terminal and remote modem with VSIP using HyperTerminal” beginning with Step 8. Change the port selection to the re-directed COM port configured in COM-Port Redirector.
