Presidents Report

Today we are at home to the Metro Premier and Premier Reserve sides. We welcome them to our club and look forward to entertaining them in our clubrooms after the games. I hope they have an enjoyable afternoon (without winning of course!)

Last week a bunch of supporters travelled by Mini-Van to the Waikato and we had a great time. It was reminiscent of our glory days in the national league when bus loads of Manurewa supporters travelled to such places as the Waikato, Manawatu, Napier, and Wellington to support our team.

This time the trip was marred somewhat by the team going down 5-0 to a spirited Melville side. They wanted it more than we did and outplayed us in all departments of the game. The only bright note was the performance of Nathan Coe which earned him the player of the day award. Well done Nate. I hope that if Donna owns a cat, she kept it out of Mark‟s way when they got home!

I wrote in the last programme that the reserves were playing well but couldn‟t score goals. Well! They surely did last week, 6 in fact, in a friendly against Papakura reserves. Even though Papakura play in a division lower than our boys, 6 - 0 was still a pleasing result. Well done lads!

Our ladies 1st Div team have played three games for 2 wins and a draw, not bad for a team that were reluctant to take promotion this season. I think they have proved that they are capable of Div 1 football. Well done girls!

Our Jubilee Committee that was formed to organize the celebrations have worked hard over the last few months to make sure the events planned are a success. Their reward is to see as many members as possible, attending and enjoying these events over Queen's Birthday weekend. So come along, catch up with old friends from the past and present and reminisce on the highs, lows and memorable events of the last 50yrs. I hope to see you all at the celebrations!

That‟s all for this week. Catch you next programme!

In our last competitive game at home when we played Bay Olympic we were pleased to come away with our first 3 points in a 3-2 home win. In the first half of that game we had talked about starting strong and not waiting 15mins to warm up, so Brody Thomson got us to a great start with his first of season after some good work down our left hand side, then we seemed to switch off until half time and were lucky to be only 1 all going into the half time period.

In the 2nd half we adjusted a few things to combat a few injures and it took us 10mins to get back into the game, it wasn't until Clayton gave a penalty away and got himself up to make a fine save to his left, that we were in the game. After that save the boys seemed to lift which was great to see and then started to dominate the game. We then put 2 good goals away 1 to Chris Mudgeway and a 2nd off a set play to Brody, they scored their 2nd late on, which was disappointing but we got there in the end.

Last weekend we had a "friendly" away to Papakura and I'm pleased to say we won 6-0, it was nice as a coach to try different things with some of the boys in different positions. Its always nice to win a local derby and score some goals.

But Gareth and myself both said that we had to carry on the good work we had done against Bay Olympic and carry that through the "friendly" and then onto this weeks game against Metro. So we are looking for more out of the boys as the season starts to heat up and are hoping for another 3 points at home today.

Thank you to our supporters and parents that come down to watch us it is appreciated.

Premier League Coaches Comments

The last two games have shown up the highs and lows of our „beautiful game.‟

Two weeks back against Bay Olympic we celebrated our first home win coming from behind to win 4-1. Both Ash and I were disappointed by our lack of energy and spark in the first half and once that was lifted the result was never in doubt. The main positive we took from the game was our attacking prowess which up until now had been struggling.

Our latest result a 5-0 defeat away to Melville hopefully has taught us a lesson that quality sides will punish mistakes and credit to Melville that everything they tried turned to goals. For forty minutes at 0-0 we were well in the game but to concede that close to half time was suicidal. We will lick our wounds and tidy up areas of concern and resume our league battle this week against Metro.

A warm welcome to Memorial Park to Mickey Byrne his team and supporters. Metro bring an experienced side to Manurewa with the likes of Sean Devine last season‟s “Golden Boot” and Matt Cuneen an accomplished centre back.

To our many supporters that travelled to Melville, thank you and hopefully we can turn the result around today.

Good luck to all „Rewa‟ teams this weekend.

Enjoy the game.

Another week and the crate competition is still going strong. The Ladies 1st team and AFF Championship league are the only teams left in the race. If you don't know what the crate comp. is, its a competition between the senior sides of the club to be the last team standing effectively without a loss. The winning team receives a crate from the rest of the senior teams. So Prems, Reserves, 6th A and B and ladies 2nd team. Start collecting your funds to pay up.

You may wonder where this came from. As some may know I had a job transfer to Christchurch for 2 years up until April of last year. While in Christchurch I played for the Mighty Halswell Hawks. My son Adam played for Burnside. Both strong clubs and of reasonable size. Burnside the largest South Island club. It was interesting that both clubs although had junior and youth sections the three sections never met apart from some seniors giving out prizes at prize giving and the odd time while supporting the 1st team. One, because Burnside had no club rooms and had after matches at the local pub and two, Halswell had club rooms but juniors never to be seen, possibly due to the size of the club rooms. Having been with the Manurewa Club myself for over 30 years, closer to 40 years apart from my time in Christchurch and 5 years away with the army, I can say you don't know what you've got until its not there.

The Clubrooms at Memorial Park are one of the best in the country and to be envied by many. They belong to the club and that's the whole club. There is nothing better for the younger members to watch the senior sides play and be part of a club atmosphere. With this in mind we would ask that supporters and members/players please be considerate of the other sections of the club and allow them to have their time in their club to have their player of the day uninterrupted. Please don't be offended if the bar is closed for 15 - 20mins during the game on the first pitch and should you stumble into the prize giving which is held just before half time of our 2.45 game please be considerate and respect their right to be recognised by their peers. Please allow all members to enjoy the their club. The bar will re-open for half time onwards so plenty of time to sooth the throat at half time and beyond.

Appreciate your co operation. (Next article will be two pages on the top goals scorer and play by play replays (DVD out shortly) unless any senior member can contribute an article. See Tania Bevan to be part of this top quality program.)

Division One At the time of this article going to print the Manurewa Div1 Ladies team sits atop of their competition unbeaten in three games with two wins and a draw. Last weekends opposition Fencibles proved to be quite stubborn, and dogged in their defence against a Manurewa side who dominated possession and territory for long periods of the game. After going a goal down midway through the first spell Manurewa equalised shortly after with a well taken goal by Madeleine Landermack then went ahead after a sustained period of Manurewa pressure forced a Fencibles own goal. The style of play I demand differs from what has been played in the past, but I am confident and happy with the efforts to date, and the team is being well led by Captain Cindy Morby.

This weeks home against is against my pervious club Bay Olympic, Kick off 12.30pm.

Division Three The woman's division 3 team has earned two draws over the last two games. Arch rivals Papatoetoe visited Memorial Park and were lucky the game was only 80 minutes. It ended 1-1 but 'rewa was applying all the pressure at the end. All credit to the 'toe defense though as all the late chances were denied. We definitely missed our star striker Shontelle Stevens who was away at a national rep tournament in Napier. However it was another entertaining game for the crowd. Last week saw unpleasant conditions at Pukekohe and the tight games from last year continued. Rewa looked uninspired in the first half and Puke should have taken more advantage than the one goal lead at half time. Our girls woke up at half time and a different team took the field. We had some good through balls which didn't quite have the right weight for our strikers however the resulting pressure saw a number of perfect corners taken by

Shontelle Stevens of which we were unlucky only to convert one into a goal. Last years top goal scorer Xian Li put it away from close distance. Her celebratory cupcake after the game was well earned. Again the game ended 1-1. A win is expected very shortly, especially if we can maintain intensity for 80 minutes.

Shontelle Stevens (with the ball) playing for Auckland at the National Un-der 14 Representive Tournament in Napier. Their team came third over all! Great job girls!

Wayne Newsome

Our second weekend of games was some what mixed up with games being played on Saturday and Sunday due to ANZAC weekend. In the end we came away with 5 wins, 7 losses and a draw. All of our wins saw impressive scores, our top 12th Grade team came away with a 10 nil win in the 1st division, the 13th grade won 8 nil, the 17th grade had a 5 - 1 win, and our 11th grade Spirit and also 11th Grade Pumas both came away with 4 - 1 wins.

After last weekends games the 17th grade side, coached by Nigel Harlan, 13th grade side coached by Hori Naera, and 12th grade Division one side, coached by Simon Bilton, are sitting on top of their competitions in 1st place. The 14th grade team coached by Chris Herbert are currently in 3rd place. This is an awesome effort! We hope they can keep up the good form during the season and wish all of our teams the best of luck.

It’s great to see all of our teams back into training after some time off with the school holidays! Now all we need is to finally sort the lights fiasco and we would be flying ahead! Thanks for your patience guys, I know it’s frustrating.

We welcome onboard Andrew Gerrard as the coach of our Under 19’s this year, Andrew has a lot of overseas experience and we are thrilled to have his expertise to share around and whip our lads into shape! We hope to harness his talents and get our youth section really moving next season.

After a rough start I think we finally have the 15th girls side sorted out, its great to see the amount of enthusiasm and passion from the girls into making sure their team stayed alive. Their efforts have paid off and now they can get on with playing the game they love so much! I wish them all the best for the season as I definitely have a soft spot for them!

A reminder to those Youth players who still owe part of their fees that these are due, and to keep them coming in.

Sorry for the lack of youth photos this week guys, I forgot my camera last Saturday!

Good luck to all Manurewa teams this weekend!
