Automated Production Lines

High production of parts requiring multiple processing operations

dispersed workstations+work transport system Applications:

Transfer lines used for machining Robotic spot welding lines in automotive final

assembly Sheet metal press-working Electroplating of metals

Where to Use Automated Production Lines

High product demand Requires large production quantities

Stable product design Difficult to change the sequence and content of

processing operations once the line is built Long product life

At least several years Multiple operations required on product

The different operations are assigned to different workstations in the line

System Configurations

In-line - straight line arrangement of workstations Segmented in-line – two or more straight line segments,

usually perpendicular to each other Rotary indexing machine (e.g., dial indexing machine)

Page 6: vrushabh sahare part transfer mechanism presentation

In-line Configurations

Common for machining big work pieces, such as automotive engine blocks, engine heads, and transmission cases

Page 7: vrushabh sahare part transfer mechanism presentation

Segmented In-Line Configurations

L-shaped layout

U-shaped layout

Rectangular configuration

Rotary Indexing Machine/table

Commonly limitedto smaller workparts and relatively few workstations. . However they require

less floor space, and are generally less expensive than other configurations.

Benefits of Automated Production Lines

Low direct labor content Low product cost High production rates Production lead time and work-in-process are minimized Factory floor space is minimized

Page 11: vrushabh sahare part transfer mechanism presentation

Limitations• Very low flexibility • Risk of obsolescence: due to new product

introduction • High vulnerability to failures: a failure in a

single machine blocks the whole system in very short time

1) Motion picture projectors

Figure shows the schematic of movie projector with Geneva mechanism. The film does not run continuously through the projector. It is requited that the film should

advance frame by frame and stands still in front of the lens for fraction of a second. Modern film projectors use an electronically controlled indexing mechanism which

allows the fast-forwarding of the film.
