New app keeps Icelandersfrom sleeping with relativesSource: http://vr-zone.com/articles/new-app-keeps-icelanders-from-

    sleeping-with-relatives/19727.html

    April 17th, 2013

Iceland has a fairly small population, meaning there's asomewhat real risk of accidentally sleeping with someoneyou're related to. A new app hopes to prevent this.

Iceland has a population of just 320,000 people, less thana decent sized city. Even though we are all related if yougo far enough back, you clearly dont have to reach quite asfar to find relatives if youre from Iceland. How does thisaffect dating though; what are the chances of Icelandersaccidentally hooking up with members of their extended

    family?

Arnar Freyr Aalsteinsson, Hkon rastar Bjrnsson andAlexeander Annas Helgason; the designers of the app

Apparently, the chances are great enough to warrant thecreation of an app that lets you check. The app is linked toslendingabk, an online book of Icelanders which keepsa database of the 720,000 people who have ever beenborn in Iceland. The database is freely available to anyone

who is registered in it, and with the app, people can nowquickly look up their partners to find out if theyre cousins. The app makes use of bump technology, which allowsusers to quickly exchange information via Bluetooth; as thedesigners slogan reads: Bump the app before you bumpin bed.

If you think that this doesnt happen too often; that perhapsit isnt the most common occurrence to realize your dateis in the background of your brothers wedding photos, well then youd be wrong. One user of the app made acomment that confirms its dire necessity in the Icelandicdating world: If I would have had this app last year, Iprobably wouldnt have gone home with my cousin. Theword probably is still a little worrying, of course.

    Foxconn signs deal withMicrosoftSource: http://vr-zone.com/articles/foxconn-signs-deal-with-microsoft/19725.html

Foxconn has entered into a patent agreement with Microsoftensuring that devices powered by Google's Android andChrome operating systems will pay royalties to Microsoft

Hon Hai, Foxconns parent company, has entered into a

patent deal with Microsoft as a response to an ongoingintellectual property dispute between the two parties. HonHai has agreed to the deal, which pays royalties to Microsoftfor the disputed patents, in an attempt to keep its clients outof the way from potential lawsuits.

The dispute originates in Microsofts claims that deviceswhich use Googles Android and Chrome operating systemsare making use of innovations which belong to Microsoft. The software giant originally filed legal action against theAsian firm two years ago, potentially leading to an importban on Hon Hais products. Google meanwhile says theseclaims are based on bogus patents. However, Motorolas

handset division has already lost several legal disputesinvolving the patents, so it is not unexpected that Hon Haiwould move towards a potential deal.

Foxconn assembles 40% of all devices in the computer, communications and consumer electronics industry

This is the 19th patent deal Microsoft has managed to secure

in the past three years from companies which use Googlesmobile and laptop OS. HTC, Samsung, LG, Sharp and Acerhave all agreed to pay Microsoft royalties. The specific termsfor the deal with Hon Hai have not been disclosed yet, butwhat is certain is that Microsoft cannot have patent dealswith both designers and manufacturers of the same product. Thus, in the cases where there is overlap between Microsoftspatent deals, some compromise will have to be decided upon.

Hon Hai is the biggest manufacturing service provider forcomputes, communication and consumer electronics in the

world. Forbes estimates that 40% of product assembly inthat sector comes directly from Hon Hai. With more than54,000 patents of its own, it is no stranger to patentrights; Samuel Fu, the companys intellectual propertydirector, made the following statement: "We recognize andrespect the importance of international efforts that seekto protect intellectual property. The licensing agreementwith Microsoft represents those efforts and our continuedsupport of international trade agreements that facilitateimplementation of effective patent protection."

Sony has launched a brand new line-up for full high-definition Bravia LED TVs, with enhanced image and soundquality, and several new speaker systems for a more cinema-like sound experience.

The W-series and R-series models, unveiled at CES 2013earlier this year, include a number of technologies for morevibrant, clear displays and deeper bass sounds.

Triluminos technology employs QD Vision's Color IQ1optical component with Sony's existing display technologyfor what it claims is a higher gamut of colours on screen. TheW-series models include the X-Reality Pro picture engine forimproved picture quality.

Sound quality is also being enhanced, thanks to Sony'sSignal-to-Sound Architecture. The KDL-W954A featuringan ultra-slim two-way bass reflex speaker and stand-alonetweeter, designed to minimise sound loss and distortion. TheKDL-W904A employs an integrated 1.2m speaker duct. TheKDL-W804A, KDL-W704A, and KDL-W674A come with acompact bass reflex speaker.

Sony has also included NFC technology as part of a one-touch mirroring function, which can let users wirelesslytransmit videos, images or applications from their Miracast-supported smartphones to the TVs with just a single tap of

    the screen.

The TVs also come with Sony 3D Simulview, which lets usersview two different fullscreen images simultaneously, thanksto included glasses (on certain models). This is particularlyideal for multiplayer games, which traditionally require asplit screen, significantly reducing the size of the display foreach player.

Century lets you read booksthrough illuminated glassSource: http://vr-zone.com/articles/century-lets-you-read-books-

Books today may look quaint in the face of tablets likethe Kindle, but they are certainly not obsolete, at least not

yet. However, we do admit that classic book reading canstill be a bit troublesome due to the need for another lightsource. Nowadays, you'll probably need something a lotmore convenient than a simple night lamp, something likethis new tech item from Century.

The Light Wedge 2.0 is a peculiar looking tool that is used toprovide lighting for various reading materials. Unlike mostconventional lighting tools that are clipped at the top ofthe reading material, this one is directly placed on top ofthe page, or "wedged" through the book, and is clipped atthe side. It illuminates the page by diffusing light onto itstransparent plate, making the page seem like it's somethingthat is displayed on an electronic screen.

Inside the clip is a white LED that provides the illumination, while the plate is made of optics-enhanced acrylic lens. The

light provided by the combination of these two componentsis clear and adequately focused. It does not "spill" out, allowing the tool to be efficiently used on any dark settingwithout causing trouble to other people around you.

The dimensions of the Light Wedge 2.0 are 165 x 225 x11 mm, making it suitable for most kinds of paper sizes. Itweighs 220 grams, which can be a bit substantial, though youcan still hold up the reading material without straining yourarms, hands or wrists too much. The unit is charged via USB,and it can be used for about 15 hours when it is fully charged.

The item is currently available in Japan for about 4,000 yen(41 USD).

While many say the sky is falling for the PC sector, thecompany at the heart of the industry reported Tuesday thatit is still making a healthy profit.

Intel reported Tuesday afternoon that it had reported firstquarter revenue of $12.6 billion, operating income of $2.5billion, and net income of $2 billion. The company saidrevenue from its PC Client Group totaled $8 billion for thequarter, down 6 % year-over year. Its Data Center Grouprevenue was up to 7.5% $2.6 billion.

Amidst market softness, Intel performed well in the firstquarter and I'm excited about what lies ahead for thecompany," said Paul Otellini, Intel president and CEO,in a statement. "We shipped our next generation PCmicroprocessors, introduced a new family of products formicro-servers and will ship our new tablet and smartphonemicroprocessors this quarter. We are working with ourcustomers to introduce innovative new products acrossmultiple operating systems."

Intels posting of healthy profit margins comes not a weekafter International Data Corporation (IDC) and Gartnerreported that the PC market was suffering its worst

contraction in history. The company is predicting that nextquarters profits will be on target with previous projections.

Considering Intel does not presently have a sustainablemobile strategy, these numbers, while not impressive, aresure to be pleasing to its shareholders.

This quarter marks Paul Otellinis last as CEO, as Intels bigboss announced his retirement in late 2012. The companysboard of directors has yet to find a replacement for Otellini.

    Spain to enforce stricter

Spains Education and Culture Minister, Jose Wert, says

Spain would soon be proposing a new set of laws to helpthwart on-line piracy. Spain was recently put on a watch listfor rampant on-line piracy and is considered one of the worstoffenders in Western Europe.

In February of this year the International IntellectualProperty Alliance (IIPA) issued a report placing Spain asa region to watch for rampant piracy on-line and in somephysical trade. They are recommending that Spain be placedback on the U.S. Trade Representatives watch list as aregion not enforcing laws to stop copyright violators.

In an effort to prevent any sort of trade sanctions by theU.S. Trade Representative, Spain will be enforcing a newset of anti-piracy laws. In a recent press statement theSpanish Education and Culture Minister, Jose Wert, saidthat his government will be passing new reform that wouldplace stricter guidelines on enforcing local and internationalcopyright laws.

In an interview with Reuters news agency Wert said, "Ibelieve this reform should satisfy those who are worriedabout Spain's insufficient level of protection for intellectualproperty."

Currently, the laws in Spain make it hard for copyrightholders to protect their work from piracy. These new setof laws being drafted will make it easier for the Spanishgovernment to go after any website that links or directs aperson in some way to engage in the illegal downloading of

copyrighted material. The laws would also make it easierto shut down sites that take on-line payments for piratedcopyrighted material as well.

A Spanish lobby group known as the Coalition of ContentCreators and Industries is pressing lawmakers to makethe bill even more stringent and comparable to anyphysical copyright law. If the suggestions by the lobbyistswere passed, the government would have the power toentirely shut down or block websites that harbor illegaldownloading.

The Google eyewears software will be called Glassware, andimages displayed in front of the wearer will come from asquare-ish component that sits right above the eye. Googleclaims that the projection component is an equivalent of a25-inch HD screen from 8 feet away. The Glass can alsotake 5MP photos and record 720p videos. (Don't I look like a million bucks? Oh wait, I'm worth waymore than that!)

According to Google, under normal use, the Glass can run fora whole day, but if users decide to have prolonged Hangoutsand video recording the battery will probably run dry within

a few hours. Google will include a micro USB cable andchargeras it shouldfor people to recharge their Glassesshould they begin to die. Also, a nifty pouch will be includedto provide some protection for the Glass.

What the Glass can do in terms of augmented reality isexciting, but on the fashion-end of things it doesnt seem tootrendy at the moment.

This should be a given, but Google is warning people to keeptheir Glasses away from liquid as any excessive immersionmay be corrosive to the electronic components.

Bargain hunters looking for a tablet that sports a respectableprocessor and display resolution cant possibly look awayfrom the ifive X2 8.9.

The tablet was recently shown off at the Hong KongElectronics Fair, and although it doesnt boast the marketingpower of a Samsung tablet, the Five Elements ifive X2 willbe an attractive choice for eBay surfers.

General specs of the ifive X2 8.9 includes a 8.9-inch1920x1200 IPS display, 2GB of RAM, microSD slot, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, 5MP rear shooter (2MP front), and a7200mAh battery.

When we say respectable, we really mean it. The ifive X2sports Rockchips RK3188 Cortex A9 quad-core, which is inthe same league as Nvidias Tegra 3 and Samsungs Exynos4412. The benefit of the RK3188 is that its manufactured ona 28nm process as compared to 32nm for the Exynos 4412and Tegra 3s 40nm. Furthermore, the RK3188 also has ahigher base clockat 1.6GHz, respectively.

The Tegra 3 and Exynos 4412 are relatively dated in tech-speak, but in terms of their popularity and hype amongstconsumers, the respective chips still play a large role inpowering many of the smartphones and tablets still on themarket today. That said, the RK3188 isnt next-gen likeA15-based chips, but its still a huge improvement overprevious-gen products. Which then leads us to bang foryour bucks, and tablets featuring the RK3188 are definitelygood choices for power users on a tight budget.

Windows 8.1 (or Windows Blue) may bring back the Startbutton and perhaps even allow desktop users to skip straightto the desktop instead of having to go through the Metromenu first.

    (Ahh... The good ol' days.)

Many early adopters, especially those without a touchdisplay have griped about Windows 8s modern UI.

Although the interface works well in a touch environment, desktop functionalities without a touch interface isconfusing. In short, Microsofts brute force tactic isnt wellreceived, and many Windows users want their Start buttonback.

Microsoft claims that the Windows 8 UI is easy to learn, especially on a touchscreen. The problem, however, is thatnot everyone has adopted touch technology as many stillrely on a keyboard and mouse to carry out commands on acomputer.

While its true that media consumption is shifting towardsmobile devices with touch displays, businesses, alongwithmany other segments of PC usage (gaming for instance), stillrely heavily on the traditional approach to using a computer.

Nothing is official of course, as the source of the rumor has

specifically noted that until it ships, anything can change. So cross your fingers if you want the next Windows update

to bring back some of the things that worked.
