PlayStation VR named one of the best inventions of 2016A lot of money is flowing into the virtual reality market right now, but some of the biggest bets are on the commercial side as VR headset makers court movie theaters and theme parks. Things have been more slow-going with consumers. This largely has to do with the high price and demanding requirements for personal computers capable of running VR games. While devices such as the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive have done well grabbing headlines, the high price of each has resulted in less buzz now that both VR headsets are available. It is perhaps a bit ironic, then, that Time Magazine has now chosen PlayStation VR as one of the best inventions of 2016.

As Oculus helped push the buzz surrounding VR higher, Sony realized it already had the perfect business model for getting consumers into VR. Consumers who did not have a high-end PC capable of using the Oculus were looking at about $1,500 for the headset-and-PC bundle offered by the company. Sony, on the other hand, just had to make a headset that could run on the PlayStation 4, a machine millions of people already own.

The PSVR headset is seen as the perfect VR gateway for consumers. As an accessory, the headset alone costs $400. That is a steep price but it still manages to undercut the competition. The Oculus Rift headset costs $600 and the HTC Vive is priced at $800.

PC gaming might be the dominant form of gaming globally, but Sony has proven that dedicated gaming consoles are an advantage when selling niche products such as a VR headset. This setup allows Sony to better control the quality of the experience for gamers. Oculus and HTC have to make sure their hardware is compatible with many kinds of systems, and even then, gamers might not have a PC that is supported or powerful enough.

Razer uses projectors for more immersive gamingDeclining prices of projectors in recent years has helped increase the popularity of home theaters. Some consumers appreciate being able to get a larger display for less money, effectively replacing their TVs. Projectors do not have to replace TVs, though. They can work as a complement, as Razer has shown with its Ariana projector concept. The idea is part of the Razer Chroma, which is meant to help developers add lighting and video effects to games.

Ariana works by projecting an image on the wall behind a monitor. In demonstrations, the image from the projector looks slightly out of focus or more washed out while the image on the screen is sharp. This is supposed to mimic how people see by focusing on what is directly in front of them with everything else blurred out. The effect is that a room can become a vessel for virtual reality, no headset required.

The projector that Razer uses to demonstrate this concept supports 4K and has depth-sensing cameras. This technology allows the projector to account for other objects in the room like furniture and, of course, the screen that will be at the center of the projected image.

The concept is exciting for more than just what Razer showed off. It is easy to imagine a future in which 360-degree projectors could allow for even more immersive gaming. This kind of technology would compete with VR headsets, of course. Not everyone has the space for a projector, so VR headsets have an advantage in that respect. There has not been a lot of innovation with projectors beyond making them brighter with higher resolution, though. Razer is finally changing that and might give more people a reason to equip their house with one.

Mobile technology helps Nintendo make the most of SwitchNintendo is once again taking a unique approach. In some ways, it is staying true to the motion control experience it pushed forward with the Wii. The remotes that slide out from the controller—and also attach to either side of the Switch tablet—can be used to detect hand motions like boxing, as is the case in the launch game “Arms.”

The Switch also doubles as a mobile gaming device. It uses hardware that many users will already be familiar with. It runs on an Nvidia ARM chip based on the Tegra X1 with a 6.2in, 720p touchscreen display. It would make a nice Android tablet if not for the fact that it is running a custom Nintendo OS.

Battery life is not superb (about three hours for “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild”), but graphic-intensive games are power hogs. To help with this, the processor speed drops to 307MHz when the tablet is undocked, down from a possible 768MHz

while docked. The lower performance is justified because the tablet has a lower resolution than many TVs today, which usually have at least support 1080p. However, gaming performance will still likely take a hit. Games for the Switch will max out at 1080p, though, which is another disadvantage for the system as Microsoft and Sony prepare to release 4K versions of the Xbox and PlayStation.

Hopes are high for the Nintendo Switch in spite of its flaws. The fact that it is not dead on arrival shows that there is an appetite for a new gaming experience. This experience is centered on mobility and motion sensors. Nintendo has taken the things that make mobile devices great and used those features to build a modern gaming console. Being able to undock a tablet and continue a task without interruption seems obvious in 2017. Not everyone needs this, but many people might want it, and Microsoft and Sony do not offer it with their own gaming consoles.

New VR backpack PC hits market for $2,000One area of the virtual reality market that is just starting to emerge is portable VR Go. There are not many global brands that have products already for sale in this area yet, although some well-known brands such as HP have said they are working on such devices. Now, the Macau-based Zotac is joining Taiwan’s MSI as one of the only brands with a backpack PC currently for sale. Zotac’s VR Go is listed for $2,000 on Amazon.

The VR Go comes with all the high-end specifications users should expect in machines capable of running PC-connected VR headsets such as the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. It runs an Intel Skylake Core i7-6700T, a quadcore chip capable of operating at 3.6GHz, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 graphics card. The PC also includes a 240GB SSD and 16GB of DDR4 RAM.

Another thing that is lacking in many slim gaming PCs these days is a suite of ports, but the VR Go has plenty. It has four ports for USB 3.0 and two each for

RJ45 Ethernet, HDMI and DisplayPorts, and a bay for an additional 2.5in SATA HDD or SSD.

Given VR Go’s unique form factor, it is surprising that its price aligns closely with other gaming PCs with similar specs. The high-end specs are critical for top-notch performance, but some China makers are looking to compete with more midrange backpack PCs.

Emdoor, for example, teamed up with Intel to create the Fire Pack. The company showed off the product at the Global Sources Mobile Electronics show in October. While the Fire Pack does have the option for a Core i7, it also has a Core i5 version. It runs Nvidia’s GTX 980 GPU with 4 or 8GB RAM and 128 or 256GB of storage. Since not everyone needs or wants to play the latest games at the highest resolution, some of these lower-end options could suit a specific portion of the market that companies such as Zotac and MSI are currently overlooking.
