VPI  UPDATE  SEMINAR  VII 7-8  April,  2014

Welcome

On   behalf   of   the   Allied   Health   and   Speech   Pathology  Departments  of  the  Women’s  and  Children’s  Hospital  in  Adelaide,  and  in  conjunction  with  the  Cleft  Palate  Clinic  at   The   Children’s   Hospital   at  Westmead   in   Sydney,   I  would   like   to   invite   you   to   attend   a   special   professional   development   event,   the   VPI   Update  Seminar   VII,   to   be   held   on   April   7-8,   2014,   at   the   Women’s  and  Children’s  Hospital.

The   VPI   Update   Seminar   is   a   two-day   seminar   designed  specifically   for  Speech  Pathologists.  The  seminar   aims   to   provide   attendees   with   current   information  on  both   the   assessment  and   treatment   for  children   presenting   with   speech   disorders   related   to  velopharyngeal   insufficiency   (VPI)   and   cleft   palate  speech.

The  VPI  Update  Seminar  series  has  been   running  out  of   The   Children’s   Hospital   at   Westmead   in   Sydney  since  2005.    VPI  Update  Seminar  VII  in  Adelaide  will  be  only  the  second  time  that  the  seminar  has  left  Sydney,  and   we   are   delighted   that   this   highly   regarded   programme  is  coming  to  South  Australia.

Topics   covered   will   address   the   common   assessment  parameters  including  hypernasality,  hyponasality,  nasal  emission,   nasal   turbulence,   and   the   various   phonological  characteristics  of  cleft  palate  speech,  but  most  importantly,  the  seminar  will  describe  a   range   of  practical   therapy   techniques   and   ideas   for   the   treatment  of   speech  disorders   related   to  VPI  and  cleft  palate  speech.

Other   presentations   include   a   focus   on   feeding   difficulties   in   infants   with   cleft   lip   and   palate,   ENT   issues   in   this   population,   and   presentations   from   representatives   from   the   Plastic   Surgery,   Paediatrics  and  Genetics  teams  on  different  aspects  of  the  care  of  children  with  cleft  lip  and  palate.

The   seminar   will   be   coordinated   by   David   Fitzsimons  (Westmead),   Maeve   Morrison   (Auckland)   and   Jana  Carr   (Newcastle),   all   Speech   Pathologists   who   lead  their  respective  hospital’s  cleft  palate  teams,  and  all  of  whom   have   run   the   VPI   Update   Seminar   since   2005.  David,  Maeve  and  Jana  will  ensure  that  attendees  gain  valuable,   up-to-date   knowledge   in   this   important   and  often  misunderstood  clinical  area.

Please   read   this  brochure   in  detail   and   then  complete  your   registration   form   as   soon   as   possible   to   reserve  your   place   in   the   Seminar,   as   places   are   limited,   and  the  seminar  is  not  too  far  away.

If   you   have  any   enquiries   or   questions,   please  do   not  hesitate  to  contact  me  at  The  Women’s  and  Children’s  Hospital  on  the  contact  details  below:

I  look  forward  to  seeing  you  at  the  VPI  Update  Seminar  in  April.

Important  Information

Keeping  Down  the  Cost  of  Professional   Development  for  Speech  Pathologists

One  of   the  key  aims  of   the  VPI  Update  Seminar  Series  has  always  been  to  provide  professional  education  to  as  many   Speech   Pathologists   as   possible   at   an   affordable   price.   We   are   committed   to   keeping   the  costs   of   the  VPI   Update   Seminar   each   year   as   low   as  possible,  and   this   year   is   certainly   no   different.  We  ap-preciate   that   professional   development   for   Speech  Pathologists   can   be,   and   typically   is,   very   expensive,  and  we   have   no   intention   of   pricing   the   seminar   out   of  the  reach  of  Speech  Pathologists.

The  registration  fee  for  the  entire   two-day   programme  is   still   only   $165   (including   GST)   or   $110   (including  GST)  for  Speech  Pathology  students.    This  price  has  not  changed  since  we  started  running  the  seminar  in  2005.

Frequently  Asked  Questions  (FAQ)

Are  day  registrations  available? No.  Unfortunately,  day  registrations  are  not  available.

Can  I  share  my  attendance  with  another  Speech  Pathologist  i.e.  attend  one  day  each? No.  The  seminar  is  designed  as  a  two-day  event  and  the  programme  order  may  change  at  short  notice.  To  get  the  most  benefit  from  the  seminar,  participants  should  attend  on  both  days.

Will  there  be  videos  at  the  seminar  of  actual  assessment  and  therapy  cases?   Absolutely!  A  picture  tells  a  thousand  words  and  its  important  that  we  demonstrate  the  speech  samples  and  the  therapy  techniques  using  video  recordings.

How  formal  will  the  seminar  be?  Will  I  get  a  chance  to  ask  questions? The  seminar  is  designed  to  be  an  interactive  learning  experience,  and  questions  are  essential.  Come  along  and  participate  and  get  the  most  out  of  the  seminar  that  you  can.

What  is  the  VPI  Update  Seminar  dress  code? Jeans  and  comfortable  clothes.  Please  do  not  dress  up  for  the  seminar.

Will  there  be  any  presentation  notes  that  I  can  access  for  use  during  the  seminar? Yes.  Notes  for  the  various  talks  will  be  uploaded  onto  this  website  shortly  before  the  seminar.  A  password  will  be  given  out  to  all  delegates  during  the  seminar:      www.chw.edu.au/prof/services/cleft

Can  I  follow  along  on  my  iPad? Yes.  The  notes  on  this  website  will  be  PDF  versions  of  the  PowerPoint  slides,  so  you  could  download  the  talks  and  follow  along  as  they  are  presented.

Can  I  record  the  seminar? Unfortunately,  no.  We  play  a  number  of  audio  and  video  files  of  patients  during  the  seminar  and  while  we  have  parental  consent  for  this,  we  do  not  have  consent  for  them  to  be  permanently  archived  in  any  recording.
